A tight pleasing copy of this noted first edition -- with the 20 full page lithographed plates after drawings by Gavarni -- Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier1804-1866 who became world famous as an artist working under the name: Paul Gavarni. The illustrations include abook collector savoring an "edition princeps" while a jaded bookseller leans disinterestedly against his stall awaiting a decision a man in a field watching for game with a rifle resting at his side a billiards player men engaged in a round of boulle a boy sitting on a stream's bank fishing with a pole a male "voisine" observing his neighbors thorugh a small spyglass a print connoisseur looking over a portfolio of images: "avant la lettre" two pensive men staring at a chess board a group of men playing cards at a table etc. Vicaire I 987. A scarce selection from Gavarni"s celebrated "Masques et Visages" comprising nine lithographs from his sharp satire of 19th century French political life "Histoire de Politiquer." In the publisher"s original pictorial paper wraps. Illustrated with nine full-page lithographs by Gavarni printed by Lemercier Paris from the Histoire de Politiquer series within his larger Masques et Visages collection. Collated complete. Each lithograph presents a characteristically sharp vignette of contemporary French social and political life accompanied by a caption beneath the image. Gavarni"s celebrated Masques et Visages was an ambitious cycle of some 329 lithographs arranged into eighteen suites and published principally in 1852-1853. Paul Gavarni Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier 1804-1866 was a celebrated French draughtsman lithographer and caricaturist particularly renowned for his perceptive and frequently humorous depictions of Parisian society. In this work Gavarni turns his attention to the political opinions arguments and pretensions of ordinary society. An appealing survival of Gavarni"s political caricature. In the publisher"s original pictorial paper wraps. Externally a little worn. Scattered spotting to perimeters of wraps with the odd light handling mark and soiling. Chipping closed tearing and creasing to extremities with loss to corners. Spine perished. Internally generally firmly bound. With the exception of the first all tissue-guards removed with residue to inner margins. Plates generally bright and clean with scattered spotting heavier to marings occasionally extending to the images. Good Librairie Nouvelle paperback
