First edition of one of the most beautiful books on botany from the 18th century illustrated with 472 full-page plates hand-colored by Nicolas-François Regnault 1746-c.1810 and Genevieve de Nangis Regnault. Blunt & Stearn p.171; Johnston 517; Dunthorne 256; Great Flower Books 1990 p.131; Nissen BBI 1600; Pritzel 7475; Stafleu & Cowan 8810; Soultrait 18th century 118. Blunt wrote about this book: "Perhaps the most impressive French botanical book of the period is Francois Regnault's La Botanique with nearly five hundred hand-coloured etchings. Many of these plates are the work of Genevieve de Nangis Regnault. The book deals with useful and decorative plants and the author engagingly described the potato 'as possibly the only good thing that ever came out of America'". Painter draftsman and engraver Nicolas-François Regnault composed La Botanique with the help of his wife Genevieve who drew engraved and colored the vast majority of the plates. "Mrs Regnault poses the colors with delicacy as evidenced by the plates dedicated to flowers with subtle hues such as the honeysuckle which also adorns the garland of the title page or the oleander". Pinault Sorensen Le Livre de botanique 2008 p.70. In addition to the list of medicinal plants the book also lists plants meant for gastronomy or the practice of the arts. This huge work required 12 years of work for the couple to complete the work. The aim of its authors was to produce a practical treatise of botany hence the inclusion of a "List of diseases" explaining how each plant should be used against each disease whether it is the migraine insomnia vertigo apoplexy or even drunkenness. Superb very wide-margined copy of this magnificent work of natural sciences complete with its 472 watercolored engravings preserved in its uniform contemporary green vellum binding. 1668réf. 0010106France. Good with no dust jacket. 1668. Ephemera. On offer is an interesting civil law document dating from mid-17th century France. Drafted in 1668 context suggests that this is a marriage document. The names Elizabeth and Nicolau Villeganyan sic a Captain in the French army are written in the first few lines. There is also a reference to marriage later in the document as seen in this excerpt: .Porter pour leur marriage. Translation: .to wear for their wedding . This was the France of Louis XIV the Sun King. His military was the most powerful in Europe. The fact that Nicolau was a Captain meant that he commanded a company in the Royal Army and was a man of means as he would have had to purchase his commission. The document is signed by Regnault most likely a notary. The location is not identified. The paper bears a watermark displaying a shield on which is a chevron and 3 orbs. For a historian especially a social historian this manuscript is a fine example of the civil law and arrangements surrounding marriage in mid-17th century France. For a military historian it is a connection to one of the great armies in European history. This 4-page manuscript document measures 13.0 inches by 8.5 inches. It is 66% complete. The paper is in good condition with wear marks along the edges. The handwriting is difficult to read. ; Manuscripts; 13"x8.5"; 4 pages; Signed by Author . unknown
1600réf. 032381Paris: Marc Orry 1600 A good copy of the 2nd French edition of Joseph Acosta's important work on the New World first published in Spanish in 1590. Acosta was a Jesuit who spent 17 years in South America and Mexico. His work based on careful observation formed one of the first accounts of the New World. This copy is in probably contemporary full vellum binding with yapp edges. The original ties have gone. It is difficult to say if the binding was hard or soft cover because at some point in its history it has had an old stiff embossed wallpaper with gilt birds and flowers used to form new endpapers. There are no pages before the title page which has had a strip added at the bottom and which is coming loose. Contents: title page; dedication pp ii-iv; advert; poems 4pp; Extrait du Privilege du Roi 1p; Text in 7 books pp 1-375; table of contents 34 pp. The text pages are numbered on the recto only. With decorative head pieces and initial capitals. The text is very clean with just the occasional mark and some light underlining at p 238 but p 58 is missing. P 31 is mispaginated as p 13; p 267 is un-numbered and p 97 is very thin with a hole in the bottom margin. The final third of the book is quite difficult to open fully - probably because of the way the endpapers have been added. Marc Orry hardcover
