1949réf. 3574London: Longmans Green and Co 1949. Cloth. Good. FIRST EDITION PETER WILDEBLOOD'S COPY. 8vo. Original sage green cloth spine lettered in gilt. Wear and pushing to extremities cloth mottled. Edges spotted. Ownership inscription of Peter Wildeblood in pencil to ffep faint stains to p.1 and facing verso else tight and clean pleasingly so given the poor paper stock. In Una May's original illustrated dust jacket: well-handled with numerous losses and tears rear panel only holding by 5cm at head of bottom joint cup stain to front panel. Good/fair A well-handled queer association copy of the first edition of Stella Gibbons' 1949 second novel set at Cold Comfort Farm featuring the ownership inscription of Peter Wildeblood: just two years later in 1951 the journalist and playwright's adaptation of Cold Comfort Farm co-written with Kenneth Tynan who later stood bail for Wildeblood opened at the Haymarket Theatre London. Three years after this staging in January 1954 Wildeblood was arrested for 'gross indecency' under the 1885 Labouchère Amendment alongside Lord Montagu and Michael Pitt-Rivers. During the trial Wildeblood like Wilde before him though using different language acknowledged his 'inversion'. Unlike his queer forebear and near namesake however Wildeblood not only remained in Britain after his prison term but also campaigned for legal change publishing his civil rights-agitating-cum-prison memoir Against the Law 1955 and providing evidence to the Wolfenden committee. Books from Wildeblood's library are rare indeed we've been unable to trace what happened to it: do please get in touch if you can tell us more. Longmans, Green and Co hardcover

Original monochrome illustrated wrappers lettered in white. Gentlest wear to extremities. Very good A significant association copy of this early Richard Hamilton-designed catalogue for the Hatton Gallery's 1957 Gods and Men exhibition with a Pop Art feel though not fully "young witty gimmicky glamorous and Big Business" as he later wrote from the collection of Holland and Hamilton's colleague fellow artist and art lecturer at the University of Durham Lawrence Gowing and indeed commanding: "return to L.G." on its title page. Lawrence Gowing then Professor of Fine Art at King's College University of Durham now the University of Newcastle had recruited Richard Hamilton in 1952 to teach design; he later developed a 'basic course' for first-year students with Victor Pasmore remaining on the staff until 1966 and as this catalogue indicates helped with exhibitions at the Hatton Gallery designing and printing the posters and catalogues in house. The intellectual father of Pop Art or 'Pop Daddy' also exhibited his own work at the Hatton Gallery which two years earlier in 1955 hosted his important photographic installation Man Machine and Motion ahead of its move to the ICA. The Gods and Men exhibition featured Stephen Tomlin's head of Lytton Strachey lent by Julia Strachey "Mrs Lawrence Gowing" and previously Mrs Stephen Tomlin as well as three Epstein busts at the modern end as well as C19th carvings from New Zealand New Ireland the Solomon Islands Luba and New Britain plus Egyptian Egypto-Roman and Romano-British wood and stone heads. 1920réf. 186580Tokyo: Rinshikin Shukai 1920-34. A collection of over 1300 examples A vibrant collection of pre-war matchbox labels produced by the Rinshikin Shukai Japan's first society for matchbox collectors. The bold designs show kabuki actors geisha Buddhist deities baseball players famous ukiyo-e prints vistas of capital cities and even wartime propaganda. This album opens with 100 labels on untrimmed sheets each one submitted by an individual member of the Rinshikin Shukai. The labels are then divided into sets. Many are after famous prints by the likes of Kitagawa Utamaro and Sharaku but the majority are fresh designs. One charming set is titled "Sports in the Afterlife" and shows silver skeletons playing a variety of sports. The wartime examples depict cartoon soldiers firing missiles piloting aircraft and wading through rivers. One set commemorates the "Three Brave Bombers" a group of soldiers lionized for breaking through the Chinese lines during the Shanghai Incident and setting off suicide bombs. The Rinshikin Shukai was formed in 1903 by Fukuyama Hekisui 1876-1934 for those interested in collecting designing and distributing matchbox labels. In 1907 it held a sponsored display at the Tokyo Industrial Exhibition where thousands of labels designed by Hekisui were distributed. Over the following 30 years Hekisui's personal collection grew to exceed 200000 examples designed by prominent members such as Furuya Rankei Hasegawa Giichiro Ogawa Saku and Oda Shuichi. Upon his death in 1934 the society produced a commemorative label that is pasted at the front of this album. Quarto concertina-style. With 1323 colour woodblock matchbox labels 60 x 42 mm to 117 x 78 mm 100 on tipped-in and untrimmed sheets 2 loosely inserted 10 letterpress labels mounted on recto and verso of 26 leaves 2 sides blank; many printed on mica-speckled paper text in Japanese. Original brown thick card boards original manuscript paper label on front board. Labels bright a couple with loss a few seemingly missing boards rubbed 2 joints repaired with Japanese tissue: a well-preserved collection. hardcover
