1959Best.-Nr. 008606New York: Henry Holt and Company 1959. First edition first printing. Hardcover. This strikingly clean jacketed copy of the first edition first printing of Robert Frosts 1959 collection of Favorite Poems for Young Readers is signed by him "Robert Frost" on the title page just above his printed name. This collection takes its title from the words repeated at the end of each stanza of this book's first poem "The Pasture" first published as the prefatory to North of Boston in 1914. Of this collection the publisher said Frost "has gathered a group of his poems to be read to and by young people. To Robert Frost a great-grandfather with a remarkable number of small friends this was a labor of love. Frost dedicated the volume to his mother Belle Moodie Frost who knew as a teacher that no poetry was good for children that wasnt equally good for their elders. Evoking Frosts famous poem Mending Wall Frosts friend Edward Hyde Cox 1914-1988 who contributes a Foreword to this volume said of Frost that he had never added a single stone to the wall that so often separates age from youth. Prevalent among the 51 poems herein is Frost's gently subversive inclination to write verse that is superficially accessible "lovely dark and deep" upon sounding. This is a handsome book bound in orange-yellow linen cloth with a vignette of a bird on a fence post stamped in black on the lower right front cover corner and spine print stamped in black with a red acorn and leaf device between at the spine's center. The contents feature wood engravings by Thomas W. Nason and are bound with endpapers of heavy light gray wove paper and red and yellow head and tail bands. The dust jacket printed on beige laid paper features a wood engraving of birches spanning the lower front face spine and extending onto the rear face. The rear face prominently features Yousuf Karsh's famous portrait photograph of Frost. Condition is truly fine in a truly fine dust jacket. The illustrated cloth binding is immaculately clean and bright with sharp corners and only the most trivial hints of shelf wear to extremities. The contents are likewise pristine with no spotting soiling toning or previous ownership marks. "FIRST EDITION" is so stated on the title page verso. The contents retain a pleasingly stiff feel The dust jacket is crisp bright clean and entirely complete with no loss or tears and retaining the original "$3.00" upper front flap price. We note only a hint of wrinkling to the spine heel and a touch of soiling to the lower rear face. The jacket is protected beneath a clear removable archival cover. Publisher's statements are often hyperbolic. In this case the dust jacket's front flap description of Robert Frost as "America's beloved poet ageless and for the ages" was and remains more accurate than advertising. Before this volume was published on 26 March 1959 Robert Frost 1874-1963 reached the age of eighty-five. His stature had risen to an apex arguably unequalled by any American poet since. Frost had long-since won all of his still-unrivaled four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry 1924 1931 1937 and 1943. He spent his final years as the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century with an accumulating hoard of academic and civic honors. Two years before his death he became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration Kennedy January 1961. 1766Best.-Nr. 26519Naples 1766-1776. A single aquatint plate drawn and engraved after the original pieces in the Hamilton collection. The colour aquatint shows a confrontation between two men one brandishing a sword with cloak draped over his left arm the other attempting to ward him off a stylized tree flanks the illustration. The background is black the image coloured with shades of tan terra-cotta and gold. Printed on a single folio sheet measuring approximately 20" x 13" the image approximately 11.5" X 9.5". Now presented in cream mounting boards 22" x18" behind clear mylar. A very fine plate in an excellent state of preservation. A BEAUTIFUL AND IMPRESSIVE PLATE FROM A MASTERPIECE OF CLASSIC ART RENDERINGS AND PUBLICATION. Hamilton served as British envoy to the court of Naples where he began collecting Greek vases and other antiquities immediately upon arriving at his post. In 1766–67 he published a volume of engravings of his collection entitled A Collection of Etruscan Greek and Roman antiquities from the cabinet of the Honble. Wm. Hamilton. A further three volumes were produced in 1769–76. Josiah Wedgwood the potter and porcelain maker drew great inspiration from the reproductions presented in Hamilton's volumes. While widely recognized for their beauty the reproductions from Hamilton's vases have become evidence of the irreconcilable problem of neoclassicism in the Romantic period. Significant changes in the way the vases were engraved over a span of thirty or forty years demonstrate how an immutable collection of objects is subject to radical shifts in representation in response to the social and artistic styles of the time. hardcover

George Murgatroyd Woodward 1765–1809 more commonly known as George "Moutard" or "Mustard" Woodward was an English caricaturist and humourist. He was a friend collaborator and drinking companion of Thomas Rowlandson who engraved many of his prints. Thomas Rowlandson 1757-1827 was an English artist and caricaturist of the Georgian and Regency eras noted for his ribald satire and social observation. A prolific artist and printmaker his most famous works include The Miseries of Human Life 1808 The Tours of Dr. Syntax 1812-21 Microcosm of London 1810 The English Dance of Death 1815 Military Adventures of Johnny Newcome 1815 History of Johnny Quae Genus 1822 The English Spy 1826 etc. The pseudonym Caleb Quizem is often attributed to the artist George Moutard Woodward. The portrait however links the author to Geoffrey Gambado i.e. Francis Grose. In the picture a corpulent man sits in an armchair looking at the viewer through a monocle. Two books Gambado's Annals of Horsemanship a popular book attributed to Grose reissued with Rowlandson's engravings in 1809 and Laurence Sterne's Tristam Shandy are on the table next to him and a portrait of Gambado with gouty foot and crutch hangs on the wall. 1956Best.-Nr. 9700New York: Hammer Creek Press 1956. Original Wrappers. Near Fine binding. 12mo. 24 4 blank1 pp. illus. Limited edition to approximately 100 copies. As issued in marbled paper wrappers of stiff covers with printed paper title label on the front cover. Quite a nice copy with little in the way of shelf-rubbing to the cover; Reynolds Stone-designed bookplate of noted collector Norman Sondheim inside the front cover. Short introduction by Fass about the history and aim of the press. Includes 43 described books announcements and ephemera from the press. As this present work is the 43rd item in Fass's list and only 35th in Cohen's checklist there are apparently inclusions here not noted in Cohen. Several examples of pressmarks by DePol Angelo and Carnes. Two by Valenti Angelo are done in multiple colors with gilding. The Hammer Creek Press began when in 1950 when Fass purchased from Valenti Angelo a small Hughes & Kimber cast iron press previously owned by Bruce Rogers who had sold it to Angelo the year before. It was on this press of significant provenance that the bulk of the Hammer Creek Press editions were printed including this present book. Opening this work is an engraving by John DePol of the storied press with a page of "Data" by Fass. One of the mores substantial works issued by the Press as well as one of the more uncommon titles despite the larger-than-usual limitation. As more than 30 institutions are reporting ownership according to OCLC it means this is increasingly rare in commerce. A lovely example of Fass's work. Cohen 35. Hammer Creek Press unknown

These are appealing examples of the illustrated works that were so popular in the Victorian era providing readers with glimpses of the nobility images of their favorite literary characters and the opportunity to enjoy dramatic scenery from the comfort of their drawing rooms. The first two works here contain portraits of beautiful women both real society belles and heroines of bestselling romances. The latter two transport the armchair traveller to the wilds of Wales to the Austrian and Italian Alps and to the Rhine River. Although in black and white the engravings are so detailed and finely executed particularly in the use of shadow and light that both portraits and landscapes come to life. In the days before photography--much less streaming videos--books like these brought beauty and imagination into everyday lives.

1826Best.-Nr. ABE-90785021091826 Faust was Goethe's most celebrated creation with international editions in his lifetime and subsequently in films and books across the world with translations in most languages. This is a complete set of the 26 engravings Moritz Retzsh produced as an illustration of Goethe's text; the book has no words in it not even a publisher or date. What it does have is a fabulous set of the original plate pulls complete with plate marks. Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch was a German painter draughtsman and etcher; much celebrated in his day. This is in a way a fine example of what would now called a graphic novel. The 26 etched pictures tell the story and words are not needed. In Germany there were many such books without words and this one in particular influenced the English Pre Raphaelites. This volume is in its original binding with a very fragile leather spine which turns around to the original marbled cover boards which are also in a fragile state. There is no title page or date and no publishing house is mentioned. The corners are leather also and the spine has five subtly raised bands and no title. A much poorer copy of this was featured in the exhibition of Pre Raphaelites at Tate Britain. My copy is considerably better but it is by no means a fine one. It has been used and looked at probably a great deal over the last 200 years or so. The leather is very worn the marbled cover boards are patinated and there is a mixture of hand written names and an inscription on the front end paper. It is very rare in any state at all because it was easily broken up so the plates could be framed. This is I must stress a complete bound full set and as such it is very rare indeed. The earlier of the two dated inscriptions states 1826; but it cannot be viewed as an accurate issue date. An edition exists which has a German title page and text but this is not one of those. It's a bit of a mystery. The exhibited copy in the Tate exhibition was inspected by me I knew one of the curators and it was also without any text. International Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. hardcover
