1790réf. ST19326Amsterdam: H. Keyzer H. Gartman en W. Vermandel 1790. 555 x 345 mm. 21 7/8 x 13 3/4". 2 p.l. 62 folding plates. Attractive late 19th or early 20th century retrospective polished brown calf by L. Guétant stamp-signed in gilt on tail of spine double gilt-ruled border floral cornerpieces raised bands spine panels with scrolling floral borders and central flower ornament gilt titling. With title vignette and 62 ENGRAVED FOLDING PLATES ALL WITH BEAUTIFUL HAND COLORING AND HIGHLIGHTED WITH GOLD depicting Bible scenes from the Old and New Testament 61 of which are by Jan Luyken. A Large Paper Copy. For earlier editions: Graesse IV p. 308; Brunet III 1245-46; Klaversma & Hannema 159-164. Light rubbing to joints and edges boards just a little marked trivial foxing and faint spots here and there but A REMARKABLY FINE COPY the binding lustrous and showing little wear the paper extremely bright and fresh the margins immense and the paint and gold unusually vibrant. The marvelous illustrations of Dutch engraver and poet Jan Luyken comprise this collection of "remarkable stories" from the Bible each depicted with panoramic grandeur and enhanced with a wide range of finely applied colors and gold. Luyken 1649-1712 had written and illustrated erotic poetry as a young man but later became a devout Pietist after reading the works of German mystic Jakob Böhme. He became a member of the Baptist Church in 1673 and thereafter devoted his talents to producing religious works. The vast scenes here are notable in their scale detail and animation. There are a number of battle scenes from the Old Testament as well as dramatic depictions of the plagues and a fascinating episode from the histories of Josephus depicting Herod's soldiers being lowered down the side of a cliff in large boxes suspended from chains in order to attack the thieves hiding in caverns on the cliffside. There is a majestic portrayal of the Queen of Sheba arriving at the court of Solomon a peaceful scene of Adam naming the beasts in the Garden of Eden and a festive celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles. New Testament scenes include a terrifying final judgment a blinding conversion of St. Paul and scenes from that Apostle's travels. The engravings have one common trait: they are heavily populated whether by men or beasts and one of Luyken's special gifts is to render every person in the crowd as an individual with his own concerns and reactions to the events at hand. The engravings while already greatly pleasing in black and white are even more stirring and memorable when seen in the full color and gold used here. Expansive tableaus are given greater definition and clarity and events such as Noah’s flood and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah are rendered even more successful in expressing the awesome powers of the Almighty. The illustrations are quite definitely Protestant in point of view: there are no depictions of the Virgin Mary not even a Nativity scene. Except for engravings of the Annunciation to the Shepherds and the Massacre of the Holy Innocents the illustrations focus on Jesus as an adult and on the work of his Apostles spreading the gospel. There were earlier editions containing Luyken's 62 large plates which originally appeared without text as here in 1708 and they appeared again with a text in Dutch in 1729 and in French in 1732. Copies of these editions appear with some regularity in the marketplace but are usually not colored and are often found incomplete or with other major condition issues. We can trace no record in RBH or OCLC of a copy of our 1790 edition and we can find nothing that compares with the quality of coloring and grand height attained by the monumental margins seen here. 1847réf. 146851847. Firmin Didot. Three steel engravings published in L'Univers Pittoresque in 1847 depicting the Sultan of Lahij's palace a greeting between two Arab men and a saddled camel prepared for travel. The group belongs to the illustrated French literature through which nineteenth-century European readers encountered the Arabian Peninsula combining architectural views with scenes of customary greeting and travel. The Lahij image is especially useful for documenting how the residence of the sultanate near Aden was visually presented to European audiences before the major political changes that reshaped southern Arabia later in the century. Firmin Didot. Chateau Du Saltan d'Aden a Lahadj; Salut des Arabes; Chameau scelle pour le Voyage. Paris: Firmin Didot 1847. Three original steel engravings each approximately 5 x 8.2 inches. Chateau Du Saltan d'Aden a Lahadj shows the Sultan of Lahij's castle set within a cultivated and mountainous landscape with palm trees and surrounding countryside. Salut des Arabes depicts two Arab men greeting one another with a handshake. Chameau scelle pour le Voyage shows a saddled camel in a desert setting emphasizing the animal's role in overland travel. Comparable examples of these subjects are attributed to the engraver Lemaitre in the contemporary print market. The three prints preserve a French illustrated view of southern Arabia that moves between political architecture social custom and transportation. Their publication in 1847 places them within the period when Aden had already come under British control while neighboring Lahij retained its own sultanate giving the palace view a specific political geography distinct from the port colony itself. Some age-related toning and pinholes in the upper margins; the first engraving has remnants of a sticker at the upper right corner. The third engraving shows former staple marks and an approximately 4 cm loss along the upper edge not affecting the image. Overall very good condition. unknown books

1931réf. 17082110London: Jonathan Cape Printed by Walter Lewis at the University Press Cambridge 1931. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Gill Eric. No. 129 of 160 octavo size 206 pp. signed by Eric Gill. Clothing has long been an integral part of society and can be used to reflect diverse religious and cultural identities. In this essay Eric Gill 1882-1940 discusses the significance of clothes in society and argues for a more egalitarian approach to clothing; for example Gill advocates the suitability of men's clothing trousers for women as a way to liberate the sexes and create a more equal society. Gill provides wood engravings for the book illustrating his concepts and showcasing his masterful rendering of the technique; his illustrations have a slightly satirical slant while evoking the pathos of his arguments. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter brown pigskin with marbled paper boards gilt rules and lettering on the spine top edge gilt fore- and bottom edges uncut illustrations include title page device "Woman Dancing" P712; "Art and Prudence" P714; "Clothes as Houses" P715; "Clothes as Workshops" P716; "Clothes as Churches and Town Halls" P717; "Clothes for Special Parts" P718; "The Tyranny of Tailors" P719; "Nature and Nakedness" P720; "Trousers" P21; and a tailpiece of "Trousers and Spats" P722; octavo 7.5" by 5.25" pagination: i-vii 1-2 3-196 197-198 1 colophon one of 160 copies this number 129 signed "Eric G" on the colophon. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine with clean boards straight corners a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; some slight rubbing to the bottom edges of the boards and to the corners a faint stain to the gutter of Contents page and very slight cracking to the gutter at pages 128 and 129 but hinges are still tight. ___CITATION: Gill 22. ___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell. réf. 68433Limited Edition. Very Good. Slim quarto 28 cm Thirty loose woodcut plates on age-toned paper measuring 18.5 cm wide by 27 cm tall. No text or publication information present only the plates. Housed in a folder of 1/4 brown cloth with tan paper over boards and a gilt stamped title on the front board. The folder is toned and lightly rubbed at the edges. The first plate is signed by Molnár in pencil and numbered # 20 in an edition of only 36. The painter and graphic artist Pál Molnár-C. 1894-1981 born in Battonya Hungary lived and worked in a villa located in Ménesi Street on the hillside of Gellért Hill Budapest for 50 years. He held the surrealist style close to his heart throughout his life and he was also heavily inspired by the Symbolist works of Ferdinand Hodler. His illustrations of Shakespeare's Corialanus and Rostrand's Cyrano de Bergerac earned him gold medals at salons in Paris Milan and Warsaw. After his death his younger daughter Dr. Éva Csillag Pálné set up a family-owned private museum in 1984. “As a matter of fact all art is more or less surreal. The reality of everyday life differs from the reality of art which stands above reality.” - Pál Molnár-C. unknown books
