1998ref. vita5548Ithaca: Cornell University Press 1998. First Edition. Octavo blue cloth & white boards hardcover gilt letters xi 353 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: Ever since the Age of Discover Europeans have viewed the New World as a haven for victims of religious persecution and a dumping ground for social liabilities. Marilyn C. Baseler shows how the New World’s role as a refuge for the victims of political religious and economic oppression gradually devolved on the thirteen colonies that became the United States. She traces immigration patterns and policies to show how the new American Republic became an “asylum for mankind.” Baseler explains how British and colonial officials and landowners lured settlers from rival nations with promises of religious toleration economic opportunity and the “rights of Englishmen” and she identifies the liberties disabilities and benefits experienced by different immigrant groups. She also explains how the exploitation of laves subsidized the living standards of Europeans who came by choice. Cornell University Press, (1998). First Edition. hardcover books

From dust jacket: The poet’s traditional task -- to take notice of and make notes on the world’s sensory textures and wonders -- is worked out in these poems with the vividness we have come to expect from Marilyn Hacker. But intensity of gaze in this her third book has been put in service to what we must finally call vision -- a vision that is as precisely analytical of the passions as it is dispassionately responsive to the political; a vision that illuminates necessarily the crucial interface between the two. 1988ref. vita6017Bowling Green Ohio: Bowling Green State University Popular Press 1988. Octavo cream cloth hardcover 212 pp. Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: The transformation of a house a physical structure into a home has been in our culture a traditional task of women. The importance of this work has frequently been overlooked. The articles collected here examine this process of the making of the home the adaptation and decoration of the house itself and the creation selection and arrangement of objects within it as they reflected the role of American middle-class women as homemakers in the years from 1840 to 1940. The creative domestic products and processes for which women traditionally have been responsible have been most commonly relegated to the devalued category of the merely decorative or functional if indeed they are accorded any artistic status at all. Traditional women’s domestic tasks have frequently been viewed as outside the realm of useful production. Recently many scholars have begun to question these assumptions and to attempt to view the unpaid domestic activities of women as valid and valuable in aesthetic as well as economic terms. Considering the significance and pervasiveness of the association of women with the home it is logical to wonder what the house and the objects used in its decoration can tell us about women’s lives. Much of the recent research that has been conducted on the history of women has examined women as actors -- altering their environment adapting the advice they received and expressing their own views albeit often covertly -- rather than as passive consumers and followers. The arcitles in this collection represent an interdisciplinary approach to the study of women’s transformation of the domestic environment: their making of the American home from 1840 to 1940. The articles use a wide range of source materials and methods to examine American Women’s domestic material culture in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
