Des l'annee suivante cet artiste forme en Espagne dans des ecoles d'art de province se voyait proposer une grande exposition a la prestigieuse galerie Vollard et etait devenu un familier du quartier boheme de Montmartre et de ses plaisirs tapageurs. A peine quelques annees plus tard il disputait a Matisse la place de chef de file de l'avant-garde francaise et s'engageait resolument dans la voie revolutionnaire qu'il voulait suivre en tant qu'artiste universel. Cet ouvrage suit pas a pas la decouverte par Picasso de l'art et de la vie dans la capitale francaise et analyse ses reactions face a l'oeuvre de differents artistes parmi lesquels Van Gogh Toulouse-Lautrec Steinlen Puvis de Chavannes Rodin et Cezanne. Il ne tarda pas a se forger un style personnel en s'inspirant du processus meme de l'acte de peindre et en abolissant les distinctions traditionnelles entre imitation et realite. En visitant son atelier en 1907 pour y decouvrir sa toute derniere production Georges Braque s'exclama : "Avec tes tableaux c'est comme si tu voulais nous faire manger de l'etoupe ou boire du petrole !". En tant qu'artiste Picasso avait pris la tete de la troupe en se faisant cracheur de feu.
