1930réf. 19270New York: Sears Publishing Company Inc. Very Good in Very Good dj. c.1930. First Edition. Hardcover. modest shelfwear light age-toning to edges of text block vintage price sticker from San Francisco department store The White House on rear pastedown; jacket has a bit of paper loss at most corners a few other random tiny chips and small tears. Novel about a "little Irish beauty" who is "too innocent to know what all these men want from her" but manages to string a bunch of them along "through the bewildering whirl of modern high society in night clubs and cocktail parties threading her way amongst the pitfalls in the houses of the fastest sets." The jacket blurb with its reference to "these days of flaming youth" strongly suggests that the Twenties were still Roaring in the author's or at least publisher's mind even though the book was published about a year after the stock market crash. This was the fifth of seven novels written by Adams under his "Warner Fabian" pseudonym which he had originally adopted to segregate his work as an investigative journalist and respectable mainstream novelist from his more sensationalistic or trashier endeavors. Wouldn't you know it though: the first Fabian book "Flaming Youth" 1923 became a bestseller and he obligingly kept cranking out similar fare "Summer Bachelors" "Unforbidden Fruit" etc. until the mid-1930s. I'm not sure exactly when his cover was blown but by the time this book appeared it was already well known that Adams and Fabian were one and the same. Boni & Liveright rather cheekily printed quotes from both authors in an ad for a book they published in 1925. Several of the Fabian books were adapted for the movies including this one by Columbia Pictures in 1931 under the direction of William Beaudine. . Sears Publishing Company, Inc. hardcover books

1970réf. 144248Burbank CA: Warner Brothers 1970. Vintage photograph from the 1970 film showing actors Stella Stevens and Jason Robards taking direction from Sam Peckinpah on the set. With manuscript annotations regarding layout on the verso. A charming surreal revisionist Western comedy an unusual move for Peckinpah as it was released on the heels of "The Wild Bunch" 1969 and just prior to "Straw Dogs" 1971 both famed for being the high spots of the director's famed odes to violence and male madness. Certainly though Jason Robards-in what many consider to be his finest performance-is as lost as any of Peckinpah's characters but viewed from a different more relaxed perspective. Born in Wisconsin on January 1 1901 Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935 where he worked well into the 1950s. Warner Baxter was a popular film actor who starred in over 100 films between 1914 and 1950. A matinée idol during the silent era Baxter rose to prominence as the Cisco Kid in the 1928 film "In Old Arizona" for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor at the second Academy Awards. In 1936 he starred in John Ford's "The Prisoner of Shark Island" largely considered his finest role. By the late 1930s he openly talked of retiring from the industry and by the mid-1940s suffered a nervous breakdown after which he began to largely focus on film series work in order to reduce his stress most notably in the "Crime Doctor" mysteries a series of low-budget mysteries produced by Columbia Pictures from 1943-1949.
