1877réf. 886Vernon Township Richland County Ohio 1877. Folio. 310 x 200 mm. 13 x 8 inches. Manuscript in ink. 500 pp. missing the first 3 pages. Contemporary calf well worn spine separating. Paper stock a bit brown with age; final 30 pages and lower board damaged by water. With faults a legible and useful history of Vernon Ohio. Valuable compilation of early records for the town of Vernon Ohio which was organized March 9 1825 out of the north half of Sandusky and was at this time six miles square. The population in 1840 was about one thousand. After 1845 Vernon became part of Crawford County and is well watered by the tributaries of the Sandusky River. This 'clerk's book' contains records of indenture cattle ear marks election results and an alphabetized census of "white male persons subject to perform military duties" taken in 1844. In addition there are local ordinances testimonials and depositions on town issues records of road condition and expenditures to maintain them land conveyances surety bonds and trustee services and miscellaneous town financial business as recorded by the town clerk. In addition to the records of town business and there are recorded a number of indentures from local women binding their sons to local farmers to learn the business of running a farm. In March of 1841 Mary Ann Nicolin is recorded as making an indenture for her son John the Baptist Nicolin age seven with Thomas Roe for four years. The contract outlines the terms of the indenture and mentoring that John the Baptist Nicolin will receive from Mr. Roe. Another example is an indenture between Barbara Brown and Peter Bauer binding her son age seven to Bauer until he reaches the age eighteen. One can only guess what the situation was that compelled Mrs. Brown to apprentice her boy for eleven years to local farmer to learn the trade of farming. John Warner and George Keller were town clerks both coming from York County Pennsylvania in 1837 as did several of the other early settlers to Vernon. Names of dozens of other early settlers who populated Crawford County are found in these records with information on their lively hoods and positions in society. "This section of country presents the evidence of real prosperity. It is inhabited largely by industrious energetic and hardy people who came from Pennsylvania Maryland and other Middle States." 886 . unknown books

1930réf. 19270New York: Sears Publishing Company Inc. Very Good in Very Good dj. c.1930. First Edition. Hardcover. modest shelfwear light age-toning to edges of text block vintage price sticker from San Francisco department store The White House on rear pastedown; jacket has a bit of paper loss at most corners a few other random tiny chips and small tears. Novel about a "little Irish beauty" who is "too innocent to know what all these men want from her" but manages to string a bunch of them along "through the bewildering whirl of modern high society in night clubs and cocktail parties threading her way amongst the pitfalls in the houses of the fastest sets." The jacket blurb with its reference to "these days of flaming youth" strongly suggests that the Twenties were still Roaring in the author's or at least publisher's mind even though the book was published about a year after the stock market crash. This was the fifth of seven novels written by Adams under his "Warner Fabian" pseudonym which he had originally adopted to segregate his work as an investigative journalist and respectable mainstream novelist from his more sensationalistic or trashier endeavors. Wouldn't you know it though: the first Fabian book "Flaming Youth" 1923 became a bestseller and he obligingly kept cranking out similar fare "Summer Bachelors" "Unforbidden Fruit" etc. until the mid-1930s. I'm not sure exactly when his cover was blown but by the time this book appeared it was already well known that Adams and Fabian were one and the same. Boni & Liveright rather cheekily printed quotes from both authors in an ad for a book they published in 1925. Several of the Fabian books were adapted for the movies including this one by Columbia Pictures in 1931 under the direction of William Beaudine. . Sears Publishing Company, Inc. hardcover books

réf. 307501817 Leading Philadelphia bookseller-publisher and cartographer lauds "Western Emigration" quarto one page plus stamp-less address leaf in very good legible condition. Happily responding to Guilford's offer of honorary membership in the Society: "… Being convinced that a very imperfect knowledge is generally possessed by persons on the Seaboard Section of our country in relation to their trans-mountain brethren and of their country I rejoiced to find an association instituted for the purpose of defusing information of the fairest portion of our favored land and I cannot hesitate to believe but that great facilities will be derived by the enterprising emigrant to our shores who is seeking a peaceful asylum for himself and a secure and happy establishment for his posterity … it will give me pleasure to add any feeble assistance I can give in promoting the objects of its institution…" Warner was a young Quaker bookseller and publisher of Philadelphia – he also had bookshops in Charleston and Richmond Virginia the latter managed by John Grigg later founder of the Lippincott firm. As publisher Warner's notable imprints included an 1818 edition of the Federalist Papers and in 1820 possibly the earliest separately issued folding map of the United States to extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast based upon cartographer John Melish's classic 1819 wall map as well as the "western detail" maps of Lewis and Clark Humboldt and Pike. As such it "galvanized geographic ideas" about "tenuously explored lands beyond the Rocky Mountains." The letter makes clear Warner's abiding interest in American lands to the west – and sympathy for the courageous Emigrants who were then flowing westward. Perhaps Warner shared this interest with Melish in a friendship unrecorded by history. Two years later Melish published 'Information and Advice to Emigrants to the United States and from the Eastern to the Western States." Their sympathies were controversial at the time especially in Connecticut whose retained "Western Reserve" lands extending across the northern part of present day Ohio were the center of emigration. In 1817 residents of Connecticut "highly wrought up over the emigration problem" exerted "every influence … to stem the ever growing outward tide of fortune seekers" lured by "glowing descriptions of land speculators" who glossed over the dangers of floods and storms and the fraudsters preying upon the innocence of the newcomers. The Western Emigration Society led by Nathan Guilford later to be hailed as "father" of the Ohio public school system was in fact formed to provide both information and philanthropic support to emigrants though Connecticut newspapers "exposed" the organization for promoting a "deplorable species of madness" in "unhealthy regions where men worked themselves into untimely graves" unaware of the "burdensome privations of a land without churches schools and roads." Guilford was indeed a very effective lobbyist for emigration to the West. The same month that he wrote Warner he must have offered "honorary membership" to dozens of other Eastern notables including then General Andrew Jackson. Those letters and their congenial replies appear in the Ohio Historical Society and other archival collections. Benjamin Warner's response may have been one of the most interesting. Warner died prematurely three years later at the age of 35. books
