1937réf. 90799London: Boriswood 1937. First edition of Warner's first novel. Presentation copy from the author inscribed on the front free endpaper: "H. W. Bolt from Rex Warner." With loosely inserted autograph letter signed from Warner to Bolt; Harold W. Bolt b. 1901 was chairman of the Farnham Constituency Labour Party and stood for Huddersfield West in 1950 and 1951. "This strikingly original work made an immediate impression. His tale of three brothers and their quest in an unnamed country for the wild goose symbol of hope and personal regeneration was rightly seen as akin to the work of Franz Kafka; but it drew also on elements of classical mythology and even of fairy tale in a manner genuinely new in English fiction" ODNB. In the letter Warner writes that he is keen to meet Bolt but that he will not be able to speak at a proposed meeting: "It's on manning night at our A.A. guns & having managed to get a bit of leave lately I hardly like to apply for more. Also I increasingly dislike the sound of my own voice". During the war Warner served in the Home Guard in Surrey. Octavo. Original light blue cloth spine and front cover lettered in yellow.
