Illustrated with colour photos black and white photos and images of the petroglyphs discussed. "Describes among many other things the solitary spiritual meditations of young people in the mountains a form of education once essential to all those who wished to succeed in life with their particular talents. Opens a discussion of some of the issues in rock research that relate to 'notating' and 'writing' on the landscape around the world and through the millennia. This landmark publication presents a well-researched hypothesis to explain the evolution of symbolic or iconic writing from sign language trail signs and from the geometric and iconic imagery of the dreams and visions of shamans and neophyte hunters." - from dust jacket. 1853réf. BK0172Washington D.C. 1853. 24 pp. measuring 6 ½ x 10 inches. Stitched and untrimmed. Good with considerable wear and chipping at the edges some soiling and early pencil notations. Thomas Hart Benton's argument for a central transcontinental route issued as Congress was moving toward the government surveys that would dominate the Pacific railroad question during the next several years. Benton had been promoting a government-backed "central national highway" since 1849 running west from Missouri toward California. Writing to his former Missouri constituents on March 4 1853 Benton argues that the accumulated western explorations had already demonstrated the practicality of a central route. He gives particular attention to the country approaching the Rocky Mountains and to the search for a usable pass near the headwaters of the Arkansas and Rio Grande drawing heavily on the western travels of his son-in-law John C. Frémont. The final eight pages form an appendix bringing together evidence for the route. They include Frémont's 1850 letter to the Philadelphia Railroad Convention and more notably a statement made to Benton by the veteran trader and guide Antoine Leroux. Leroux recounts his early years in the West his association with the fur-trading expeditions of Ashley and Henry and his long residence at Taos. Graff describes this as the probable first printing of Leroux's statement. A useful piece of western railroad literature with substantial Frémont and New Mexico content published on the eve of the federal Pacific railroad surveys. Howes B368; Graff 270; Wagner-Camp 221; Sabin 4186. . unknown

He conducted meetings and helped organize churches in New York Pennsylvania Ohio and the western states. Balcom moved west in 1870 settling near Cawker City Kansas. 1896réf. 79679Denver: W.H. Jackson & Co. Photo 1896. Hand color-tinted photograph image: 9” x 3 ½” mount: 15” x 9 ¼”. Although Leadville was one of the largest boomtowns in Colorado the mines were in decline by the 1890s and a plan to save the community in 1895 came in the form of an ice hotel and winter carnival. After months of fundraising and then building the ice palace opened on January 1 1896. It measured 450’ long by 320’ wide with five-foot thick walls. Two octagonal towers rose 90 feet at the entrance on the north where arched doorways led visitors inside. Smaller 60-foot towers flanked the sides and the south wall. Inside there was a rink that would accommodate 1000 skaters along with two ballrooms a restaurant and a 20-foot wide promenade that led people down the middle of the place. On its first day of operation 2500 visitors came by train wagon horseback and on foot to see the gigantic wonder. For nearly four glorious months visitors paid .50 cents for adults and .25 cents per child to walk past the ice sculpture of “Lady Leadville” at the entrance and into the fantasy world of their dreams. It’s estimated there were 250000 visitors. Some edgewear and staining to the mount with a small scuff to the photograph. W.H. Jackson & Co. Photo unknown

Much of the work was actually written in the house of noted Oregon pioneer & author Belle W. Cooke who describes how she was “often reading the manuscript to my father and mother for comment.” Victor herself notes after publication that some of the historical facts regarding Marcus Whitman his efforts in the Oregon Country and the massacre orally related to her by Gray needed to have been checked more carefully.
