Rose Alice Maney Fox 1882-1954 wife of Dr. Fox 1883-1953 who also operated a grocery in Portland OR w/ former ownership label on front pastedown. First edition of this scarce directory of Portland’s most important people and businesses at the end of the 19th-Century and two years before the consolidation of Portland which drew in Albina East Portland and other areas into one city complete with a number of commercial advertising samples and added advertisements. Of special interest are such lavish illustrated sections as the Banks & Bankers section touting the deposits and prowess of the First National Bank Ladd & Tilton Portland Savings Bank Ainsworth National Bank and others with woodcut engravings of their historic downtown architecture. In addition there are advertising and paper samples throughout with engraved letter heads for companies such as G. Arata & Co. Wine & Liquor Dealers on First Street; Frank Brothers Implement Company for harness & horse goods; Good Samaritan Hospital at the time with Emma J. Wakeman who successfully oversaw the facility and nursing training school from 1885-1905; steel-engraved letterhead advertising from Meston & Dygert book binders and blank book manufacturers; Schwab Bros. Printing & Litho Co. advertisement sample as well as engraved illustrated ad for the Honeyman DeHart & Co. Hardware & Mining Supplies store on Front Street in Portland. Of particular interest is the inclusion of Vancouver Washington Territory listings prior to statehood including nearby La Camas now Camas as well prior to the great fire which destroyed the original courthouse and jail along with much of Vancouver W.T. which was subsequently rebuilt. Several illustrated paper sample ads detail the available products from the Columbia River Paper Co. founded just 6 years earlier in La Camas by Pittock and J.K. Gill. Pittock expanded his paper making operations to La Camas Washington Territory because of greater access to water and raw materials on the North bank of the Columbia River East of Vancouver W.T. Founding the Columbia River Paper Co. in 1883 with J.K. Gill the site was cleared by 100 Chinese-American laborers who had just completed work on the final link of the Northern Pacific Railroad the mill was erected a 7000 foot long aqueduct was built and the water and timber rights to the 3 lakes above La Camas were acquired as well. At the same time Pittock hired George William & Charles Smith West a father & son team of paper makers with long experience in the New York & Massachusetts paper industries with George William already having specialized in wrapping papers from Manilla hemp tea rag & straw. 1902réf. 3732Tillamook 1902. Very good. 25 leaves containing twenty-five silver gelatin photographs approximately 3.75 x 4.75 inches. Oblong 12mo. Contemporary leather spine and extremities lightly worn. Grey leaves annotated in white ink. Some slight silver mirroring at edges of several images but contents generally clean. Handsome vernacular album featuring the wilds of the Oregon coast as well as several images of local natives during a trip from Tillamook to Redondo aboard the steamer Homer. The steamer ran for two decades up and down the Pacific coast mostly hauling lumber ranging from California to Alaska. The photos appear to have been taken primarily from the ship's deck with views of the local towns from the sea and her captain on deck featured in the last few images. In the summer of 1902 the Tillamook Bay was home to Hobsonville one of the last native settlements in Oregon not on a reservation. The town is featured here including its lumber mill. While the mill employed Native Americans the situation was less than favorable to them and eventually the Tillamooks purchased the village site from Hobson making it one of the few independent Native American villages of its day. The images here show the rugged coastline several small settlements and three striking photos of the natives. These include a lovely portrait of Maggie the chief's wife; her granddaughter; and an unidentified Indian woman with her baby. A nice glimpse into this region at the turn of the century. unknown

1841réf. 104249London: John Richards & Co 1841. 3rd Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London John Richards & Co. 1841 'Third edition revised and corrected to the present time'. Octavo ii title leaf xviii 476 civ appendix and index pages. Early half tan calf and marbled papered boards with a contrasting leather title-label on the spine; covers a little rubbed and scuffed with the head of both joints slightly cracked but firm; endpapers and adjacent leaves offset mainly from the leather turn-ins; minimal scattered light foxing; early marginal emphases in pencil and rarely in ink in particular to the later sections relating to the institutions and processes of government; related annotations on several pages; overall an excellent copy. Western's apparent aim was to demonstrate the superiority of the English constitution over all other forms of government. In that context the parochial provenance of this copy is hard to beat. The ownership signature of 'J.F. Burton Adelaide 1850' appears at the head of the title page and on the front free endpaper without the place-name. The latter is also signed in pencil 'J.H. Fisher' James Hurtle Fisher around which George Fife Angas has written 'Sept 21 1853. Presented by JHF to G.F. Angas'. The full name of George Fife Angas is also written there in pencil in what we recognize as a later secretarial hand indicating in our experience that the book came originally from Angas's library. Sir James Hurtle Fisher 1790-1875 'was one of the most important pioneers of South Australia': a lawyer he was appointed first Resident Commissioner of South Australia and arrived in the colony on the 'Buffalo' with the Governor's party. He eventually became a leader of the South Australian Bar 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Angas needs no introduction; suffice to say the provenance takes some beating. We know little about Burton other than that he was an Adelaide solicitor; he is mentioned as such occasionally in the local newspapers of the day. John Richards & Co hardcover
réf. 130267Very Good. Two albumen paper photographs each 280 × 372 mm on the original card mounts each approximately 405 × 485 mm. Mounts uniformly tanned and lightly marked; trifling surface loss to silverfish to one plate confined mainly to the blank upper portion where it is inconspicuous; tiny blemishes near the top corners of the second plate; overall in excellent condition. The first image shows 665 'Lord of the Isles' a Problem class or Lady of the Lake class passenger locomotive. Clearly visible on the wheel arch is its build date 'Jany 1863'. The second image shows 2146 a DX Goods class locomotive. Both locomotives are shown in 'photographic grey' livery without tender and it is likely that these are official photographs for London and North Western Railway or the Crewe Works. Both models were designed by John Ramsbottom and entered service in the late 1850s. However these examples are fitted with cabs suggesting that the photographs were taken after the appointment of his successor Francis Webb in 1871. 1838réf. 131290London: 'Ordered by the House of Commons to be Printed' 1838. Very Good. London 'Ordered by the House of Commons to be Printed' 1838. Foolscap folio 21 1 docket pages with numerous tables. Uncut and sewn as issued; outer pages slightly dusty; light foxing throughout; an excellent copy. Great Britain and Ireland Parliamentary Paper Number 685 of 1838. The bulk of this important paper pages 4-19 is given over to 'Nos. 5 6 7. Copy of a Despatch from Governor Sir James Stirling bearing Date 15 October 1835 forwarding a Memorial from the Inhabitants of Western Australia; together with a Copy of the Answer which has been returned thereto'. It is somewhat more than that. Stirling's covering letter explains that 'The signatures attached to this memorial . belong to about one-third of the adult male population of the settlement and represent also about one third of its property in land and capital. The grievances under which the memorialists consider themselves and their fellow colonists to labour are five in number'. The five grievances are well-aired; all signatories are identified; there are five pages of lists of lands reserved for public purposes individuals or 'Assigned to or Reserved for Civil Naval and Military Officers from commencement of the Colony in June 1829 to 6 October 1835'. The second and third lists provide name rank or situation where applicable number of acres district assigned or reserved - and when and remarks. A sample record for an individual is that pertaining to Robert Ramsay for whom an 'uncertain' number of acres was reserved at Plantagenet on 12 April 1831: 'Master of brig "Britannia". On south shore of Princes Royal Harbour reserved 18 months to form a whaling establishment and then resumed on failure of conditions'. The last four pages in this section contain Lord Glenelg's thoughts on the matter as of 7 March 1837. The limited information relating to the fledgling colony of South Australia occupies only pages 20 and 21. Ferguson 2511. Provenance: the signature 'C.A.S.
