1791.A well engraved and highly detailed chart . It shows soundings, anchorage's, channels, shoals, navigational sightings. Engraved by Petit, engraver for the Depot Générale de la marine. To the left insets with coastal profiles. The main source for the chart's topography and place names is Vincente Tofiño de San Miguel's 1788 Carta esferica de las Islas de los Azores o Terceras, whose detail appears for the most part to be identical to this. A bank between the islands of Tercera and St. Michael has been added, as well as a small island southeast of the Formigues islands spotted by French mariners in 1788. This chart employs rhumb lines where the Tofiño uses latitude & longitude lines. The most significant visual difference between the Tofiño and the Depot are the latter chart's nine beautifully engraved coastal views. These all are far superior to those found on the 1755 Bellin, and show the benefit of more recent survey.A beautiful chart in fine condition.

"Concerned entirely with the Haidas of the Queen Charlotte Islands of the last century the intricacies of the kinship patterns of the great families and how they saw themselves as part of a fantastic but in its own terms logical cosmos and most of all how this was all expressed in their remarkable architecture with its perfectly integrated massive carved and painted embellishments the great totem poles of the Haidas." - from Foreward. "The documentary photographs that survive are among the few remaining records which illustrate the richness and variety of Haida monumental art. 1985rif. 762j2925USA: Garland Publishing. Good with no dust jacket. First Edition. Hardcover. "Deals with that sedulously ignored topic death in the woods." - p. xiii Author lost an Uncle and Great Uncle in logging accidents and carried a dead man from the woods in 1937. "Because nobody except their immediate families seemed unduly concerned about these killings I decided back in 1973 to investigate the matter. This study tells the story of the ordinary logger who with his axe and saw and accompanied by his sweaty partner the sawdust-covered millworker by grueling labor cut the trees from east to west across this continent. We will examine not only how they lived from day to day but also how they died. During more than three centuries the two of them served an industry which while busy at its task of producing lumber like an insatiable Moloch used up men and timber at an appalling rate." - Introduction. xxviii 252 p. THE TRANSISTOR contains 34 articles plus the introduction covering material given at a symposium on transistors held at the Bell Telephone Laboratories during the week beginning Sept. 17 1951. It includes work from luminaries like William Shockley 1956 Nobel Laureate in Physics with Bardeen and Brittain for "their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect" who contributed to three articles including "Holes and Electrons" derived from his similarly named book and "The Theory of p-n Junctions in Semi-Conductors and p-n Junction Transistors" published previously in the Bell System Technical Journal. From the transistor's invention in 1948 through the early 1950s the fledgling electronics industry was encouraged and funded by the military driving significant research into this startling new technology and it's potential. In retrospect the transistor was one of the most signficant inventions of the 20th century. Moore's law and the continual shrinking of transistor devices from a single device the size of a pea illustrated herein to many many thousands of transistors in the same space have driven the computer revolution and fundamentally changed our society in the process. This symposium details work conducted by primarily Bell System researchers to share what was then known much of it conducted under government contracts and previously unpublished. The symposium treats "theory transistor properties circuit design principles applications and finally characteristics of different transistor types then under development." As the Foreword notes: "It will be recognized that in a broad sense this constitutes by a progress report. The art is moving rapidly. There are still many problems to be solved and some of the material reported may be soon out of date. It is too early for a full appraisal of the extent to which the transistor may find its place in the field of electronics. Just now it is a promising infant trying to shed its swaddling clothes. Very good. 77 leaves illustrated with 617 original photographs from about 1.5 x 1 to 4 x 3 inches almost every page profusely annotated in white ink. Oblong folio. Contemporary faux-alligator brown leather string-tied. Edges and joints worn minor rubbing to covers. Compiler's ownership inscription on inside front cover reading "Property of Margaret E. Wells" with her address in Douglas Arizona. Occasional empty mounts minor wear to some photos but overall a very well-preserved collection. A densely-packed collection of annotated vernacular photographs documenting about a decade-and-a-half of an Arizona woman's life in the West and during various travels around the country in the early-20th century. Margaret E. Wells grew up on a ranch near Douglas Arizona which is well-represented in the photographs picturing various family members scenes around the exterior of the ranch house a shot of their school teacher Mrs. Wodham taking care of the livestock and more including Margaret as a younger child. There are also a healthy number of images around Douglas as well as other Arizona locations such as Cave Creek Ajo Grand Canyon National Park and Tombstone. As Margaret grows older the album records her travels taking her to numerous locations around the United States such as Yellowstone Park; Virginia City Montana; Bozeman Montana; campus views of Montana State College where she may have been a student for some time; desert scenes near Reno Nevada; the Chicago World's Fair in 1934; Long Beach California; San Francisco; Bryce National Park and Zion National Park in Utah; Washington; and Oregon. Some of the later photos show Margaret working at Spiegel Inc. and some of the last photographs document Margaret and her husband John with presumably their young child. Some of the more interesting images include Margaret and some of her companions dressed in "Mexican Sombreros" in Bozeman in 1927; two elevated shots of the town of Virginia City; a handful of shots of Wells' friend Buster "working on the railroad" in Arizona; and numerous shots of the various characters in a Spring 1939 rodeo in Douglas. A wide-ranging collection of annotated vernacular images recording about fifteen years in the life of a young Arizona woman in her home state as well as several other states before throughout and after the Great Depression. unknown

Seventeen leaves illustrated with ninety-one photographs and four souvenir postcards extensively annotated in white ink on the album pages throughout. Contemporary tan two-ring cardboard wrappers front wrapper with black sheet laid down titles handwritten in white ink. Minor soiling rubbing and edge wear to boards. Minor fraying to some album leaves. A delightful homemade annotated vernacular photograph album compiled by D.S. Alexander memorializing his journey by automobile train and steamship through the American West and down the Pacific coast in August 1922. The album opens with a manuscript title page indicating the locations Alexander visited which included Manitou Peak Denver and Estes Park in Colorado; Salt Lake City and the Great Salt Desert in Utah; and several locations in California namely San Francisco Long Beach Hanford San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento. Manitou is the first location pictured followed by an elevated view and a few others of Denver and the surrounding landscape. He then travels west on the highway stopping in Loveland to visit a large dam and past Big Thompson Canyon on the way to Estes Park. In Utah he visits "Eagle Gate and Beehive House - Brigham Young's official residence" the Utah state house Pioneer Park and includes a couple of "Scenes from the Great Salt Desert in western Utah" on the train to California. In San Francisco he photographs Golden Gate Park and Alcatraz Island from a ferry boat before heading south on the steamship Yale. He includes several images on the shore at Long Beach as well as scenes at Sequoia Lake in Grant Park a vineyard in Kings County the Parker Ranch large trees in Grant Park and on the capitol grounds at Sacramento. Somewhat incongruously the final leaf of the album and the last three photographs pictures Alexander onboard a steamship on the Mississippi River in May 1923 on which he took an "excursion from Davenport to Muscatine Iowa." Ultimately the album is a wonderful and unique photographic snapshot of one young man's journey through Colorado Utah and California in the late summer of 1922. unknown
