1920réf. List515Various Places 1920. Oblong folio cloth over cardstock 15 x 11 inches. Photographs and realphoto postcards most measuring around 5 x 3 1/2 inches mounted to pages. The system of national parks was created at first in a somewhat piecemeal fashion with the Department of the Interior holding responsibility for establishing each park individually. Chief White Calf of the Blackfeet famously negotiated the sale of the bulk of the lands that would form Glacier National Park in 1895 with the agreement being that the US Government would allow for Blackfoot hunting Chief White Calf’s son Chief Two Guns White Calf would later travel to Washington in protest of the government’s subsequent actions. The establishment of the National Park Service in 1916 coincided roughly with the dawn of American motor tourism. This album dates from that early period of National Park recreation and bears evidence as to the recreation that happened around the early part of the century. The album shows scenery in three national parks by noted photographers including some iconic photographs of Yellowstone by Frank J. Haynes first taken in the and several scarce images of Blackfoot attributed to the noted photographer T.J. Hileman who was the official photographer of Glacier National Park during this period. The album begins with twenty-eight photographs by Haynes who printed copies of his classic Yellowstone photographs first taken in the 1890s from his St. Paul Minnesota studio. The next group shows twenty realphoto postcards of Mt. Rainier National Wilderness Area taken by Frank Jacobs. Some images show the architecture of the lodges some of which were later designated as national landmarks due to their exemplification of National Park Service rustic-style architecture. Surrounding these images are a series of photographs presumably of the family responsible for the album showing a young family picnicking beside their automobile. This section also includes interestingly a realphoto Christmas Card from Mr. and Mrs. Mark Frederick Jukes. Jukes was a notable photographer based in Elko Nevada during this period. The next section which represents the most uncommon images in the album shows a series of images of Glacier National Park. The group includes ten realphoto postcards by or attributed to T.J. Hileman some with his copyright mark who was at that time the park’s staff photographer and famously took photographs of the Blackfoot people living in the eastern portion of the park. Included are two portraits of Two Guns White Calf and a portrait of Chief Three Bears neither of which we find records of in the trade. Following the Hileman images are twenty-one images taken by Fred Kiser of Glacier National Park each measuring 3 x 3 â… inches showing captioned scenes throughout Glacier National Park in Kiser’s distinctive cursive writing. Kiser began photographing western mountain landscapes on his own in 1905 following the death of his brother and his photographs of Glacier and its environs were reproduced during the park’s early days. Eight amateur photographs follow showing camping scenes in an unidentified Western landscape. The remainder of the album - 29 pictures - show the family at home and are most notable for a series of white children dressed up in faux- American Indian costumes. Overall a somewhat extensive and iconic representation of early automobile-age Western travel with the grand western scenery and zeitgeist of the time on full display. Images generally in fine condition with a few stray creases album with some light normal wear. Offered in partnership with James Arsenault & Company. unknown books
1954réf. List516California and Oregon 1954. Oblong 8vo dyed calf album measuring 11 x 7 inches. Contains 218 photographs most measuring 3 x 5 with some smaller. Very Good. A charming album depicting the canine-centric adventures of a couple as they fish hike and camp their way through some of the great Western parks nearly always with a German Shepherd in tow. Several iconic landmarks are on display - El Capitan the Columbia River giant redwoods and more. The photographer had a keen eye for landscapes and the overall quality of the images and the omnipresent dogs present an infectious appreciation of nature and the outdoors. The size of the fish on display and the beauty of the surroundings show the bounty of the Western parks in the early days of automobile-era tourism. Mixed in with the shots of the outdoors is a curious series of a German shepherd in various poses at a table and several pictures of the couple at home. Presumably several dogs are shown all German Shepherds as the album spans several decades. Contents are beautifully preserved album torn at seams at the exterior and spine perished good to very good condition overall. unknown books

1902réf. 3732Tillamook 1902. Very good. 25 leaves containing twenty-five silver gelatin photographs approximately 3.75 x 4.75 inches. Oblong 12mo. Contemporary leather spine and extremities lightly worn. Grey leaves annotated in white ink. Some slight silver mirroring at edges of several images but contents generally clean. Handsome vernacular album featuring the wilds of the Oregon coast as well as several images of local natives during a trip from Tillamook to Redondo aboard the steamer Homer. The steamer ran for two decades up and down the Pacific coast mostly hauling lumber ranging from California to Alaska. The photos appear to have been taken primarily from the ship's deck with views of the local towns from the sea and her captain on deck featured in the last few images. In the summer of 1902 the Tillamook Bay was home to Hobsonville one of the last native settlements in Oregon not on a reservation. The town is featured here including its lumber mill. While the mill employed Native Americans the situation was less than favorable to them and eventually the Tillamooks purchased the village site from Hobson making it one of the few independent Native American villages of its day. The images here show the rugged coastline several small settlements and three striking photos of the natives. These include a lovely portrait of Maggie the chief's wife; her granddaughter; and an unidentified Indian woman with her baby. A nice glimpse into this region at the turn of the century. unknown books

1926réf. 3973Cambridge Ne: F.M. Steele 1926. Very good. Four photographs in five segments 7 x 46 inches in length folding to 7 x 9 inches on a card mount 10 x 12 inches. Images joined with linen. Light wear to card photo generally clean and crisp. An interesting documentary panoramic photograph depicting the livelihood and agricultural success of one B.F. Trosper of Cambridge Nebraska. Each panel is captioned in the negative with the third photo occupying two segments of the panorama. The first shows Trosper a woman we presume to be his wife and two other men who may be hired hands; the woman sits at the wheel of a Model T which is parked parallel to the photographer while Trosper stand with one foot on the running board. The two men stand behind the car and a stacked pen of corn is used as a background. The caption reads "The finest background for pictures in Nebraska is corn. This is B.F. Trosper of Cambridge Neb." The second panel shows a worker and a dog standing to the right edge of the image which proudly displays seven pens of corn piled high: "12000 bushels of corn. One half of the amount that was raised in 1924-25 by B.F. Trosper of Cambridge Neb." The third image again shows the car parked in front of the corn pens on the left with a tractor and plow parked on the right side of the image the farmhouse and windmill in the background. Each panel of this photo has a caption: "B.F. Trosper one of south west Nebraska's successful farmers and stock growers" and "B.F. 1915réf. 3536Various locations 1915. Very good. 288 original sepia toned photographs measuring 1.5 x 1.5 to 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Oblong large octavo album; photos affixed directly to album leaves with manuscript captions in pencil. Occasional minor wear. An expansive photo album kept between the early 1900s and the 1920s of various trips in California Alaska and Mexico both touristic and military many were taken by a sailor probably from Napa California while cruising on the U.S.S. Saturn. Many of the photos not taken on shipboard show groups of people posing around 1920s model cars and their homes in Napa. The family is featured on beaches throughout California and various other locations in Napa including Napa State Hospital. One member of the family was involved with shipbuilding and was part of the crew and maintenance of multiple vessels including the U.S. S. Milwaukee and the U.S.S. Saturn. The latter was deployed to Mexico as a means of protecting the United States while Mexico was in the midst of its civil war. There are numerous photos throughout the album of the mission including Mexican generals towns and onboard activities of the crew. The Saturn was later sent to Alaska as communications support providing radio service to keep Alaska in touch with bases in the continental United States. These photos include the working of the radio station along with exterior shots of the building a photo of a band playing on board dubbed the Saturn's "orchestra" and a silly photo of men falling from a rail car which reads "end of a joyride." The Saturn also made stops in Honolulu seen here with shots of palm trees and beaches as well as a trip through the Panama Canal. unknown books
1922réf. 3405Various locations in the American West 1922. Very good. Seventeen leaves illustrated with ninety-one photographs and four souvenir postcards extensively annotated in white ink on the album pages throughout. Contemporary tan two-ring cardboard wrappers front wrapper with black sheet laid down titles handwritten in white ink. Minor soiling rubbing and edge wear to boards. Minor fraying to some album leaves. A delightful homemade annotated vernacular photograph album compiled by D.S. Alexander memorializing his journey by automobile train and steamship through the American West and down the Pacific coast in August 1922. The album opens with a manuscript title page indicating the locations Alexander visited which included Manitou Peak Denver and Estes Park in Colorado; Salt Lake City and the Great Salt Desert in Utah; and several locations in California namely San Francisco Long Beach Hanford San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento. Manitou is the first location pictured followed by an elevated view and a few others of Denver and the surrounding landscape. He then travels west on the highway stopping in Loveland to visit a large dam and past Big Thompson Canyon on the way to Estes Park. In Utah he visits "Eagle Gate and Beehive House - Brigham Young's official residence" the Utah state house Pioneer Park and includes a couple of "Scenes from the Great Salt Desert in western Utah" on the train to California. In San Francisco he photographs Golden Gate Park and Alcatraz Island from a ferry boat before heading south on the steamship Yale. He includes several images on the shore at Long Beach as well as scenes at Sequoia Lake in Grant Park a vineyard in Kings County the Parker Ranch large trees in Grant Park and on the capitol grounds at Sacramento. Somewhat incongruously the final leaf of the album and the last three photographs pictures Alexander onboard a steamship on the Mississippi River in May 1923 on which he took an "excursion from Davenport to Muscatine Iowa." Ultimately the album is a wonderful and unique photographic snapshot of one young man's journey through Colorado Utah and California in the late summer of 1922. unknown books

Very good. 77 leaves illustrated with 617 original photographs from about 1.5 x 1 to 4 x 3 inches almost every page profusely annotated in white ink. Oblong folio. Contemporary faux-alligator brown leather string-tied. Edges and joints worn minor rubbing to covers. Compiler's ownership inscription on inside front cover reading "Property of Margaret E. Wells" with her address in Douglas Arizona. Occasional empty mounts minor wear to some photos but overall a very well-preserved collection. A densely-packed collection of annotated vernacular photographs documenting about a decade-and-a-half of an Arizona woman's life in the West and during various travels around the country in the early-20th century. Margaret E. Wells grew up on a ranch near Douglas Arizona which is well-represented in the photographs picturing various family members scenes around the exterior of the ranch house a shot of their school teacher Mrs. Wodham taking care of the livestock and more including Margaret as a younger child. There are also a healthy number of images around Douglas as well as other Arizona locations such as Cave Creek Ajo Grand Canyon National Park and Tombstone. As Margaret grows older the album records her travels taking her to numerous locations around the United States such as Yellowstone Park; Virginia City Montana; Bozeman Montana; campus views of Montana State College where she may have been a student for some time; desert scenes near Reno Nevada; the Chicago World's Fair in 1934; Long Beach California; San Francisco; Bryce National Park and Zion National Park in Utah; Washington; and Oregon. 1919réf. 2655Various locations including Wyoming Nebraska and Iowa 1919. Very good plus. Forty-two original black-and-white photographs and real photo postcards most with manuscript annotations bound into a two-ring leather binder. Two additional postcards laid in. Minor occasional dust soiling but overall in excellent shape. An intriguing pocket-sized binder containing a collection of photographs and real photo postcards documenting large-scale construction projects in the American West mostly involving concrete projects such as dams drainage reservoir infrastructure railroads and more between about 1913 to 1920. All of the projects occur on or west of the Mississippi River in locations such as Keokuk Iowa; Ardmore South Dakota; Grand Island Nebraska; and Arminto Wyoming. The projects cover a wide range of subject matter from a simple base for a railroad mail sack crane to entire dam wall construction and seem to feature several involving sprayable concrete commonly known as gunite. This material was rather new in the 1910s but is still widely in use to the present day. The majority of the images are captioned in manuscript identifying the project or location or often both. These include a power-generating dam in Keokuk; reinforcement of a reservoir dam near Lysite Wyoming; widening of a cut for the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad through Arminto; memorializing a concrete crib wall for the same railroad at the Bancroft St. Vincent Omaha; the installation of an eighteen-inch wall casting and sinking the Kelly well in Grand Island; documenting frost action on a brick chimney and water tank and also picturing a "concrete gun" in Worland Wyoming; and others. The images are organized into two sections with small tabs one reading "Dams" and the other "Miscellan." The compiler of the pictures is not identified but he or she was most likely involved in the operational aspects of the construction projects. One of the captions is initialed at the bottom "JRH" which may help scholars identify the compiler with further research. The binder itself was produced in Kansas City which may be an additional clue to the compiler's identity. A small but focused collection featuring major western construction projects from the early-20th century. unknown books

réf. 79363Four quit-claim deeds dating from the 1880s involving women in property transfers at a time when women’s property rights were severely restricted nationwide. A deed dated September 17 1885 recorded the purchase of a lot in Aspen by Mrs. Rilla Patten who paid $150 to J.C. Dodge for lot “L” in Block 99 in the town of Aspen. The city’s population exploded from 500 to 3500 between 1883 and 1885 reflecting the rapid development driven by the silver boom. On January 5 1865 Nanum Howe Rice and Eliza A. Rice husband and wife sold a "planing mill" and all its machinery in Denver Arapahoe County Territory of Colorado for $3000 to another party. He died in 1878. The additional deeds appear to show the sale and transfer of properties within families. On July 18 1887 another deed records the sale of mining property in Clear Creek County by Catherine M. Cowles for $1000 to Frederick Nelson. According to Ancestry records Nelson married Catherine K. Cowles in 1885. Her mother Catherine M Cowles died in 1884. On December 6 1883 John Hardenburgh sold to his wife Martha B. Hardenburgh an interest in several mining claims in Pitkin County Colorado and a lot in the town of Aspen for $1000. The couple was married in 1873 and she preceded him in death. Changes in property rights laws for women paved the way for these transactions. While still a territory Colorado adopted the Married Women's Property Act in 1861 which gave married white women the right to own property otherwise given to them. Before this time under coverture an English common law system married women could not own property control their wages be part of contracts and otherwise act autonomously to their husband's authority. Further in 1872 the Colorado Territory allowed any woman while married to “execute any bond bill promissory note or other instrument in writing for the direct payment of money; and if the consideration thereof went to the benefit of her estate.” By 1900 most states allowed married white women to own property but access to credit and mortgages without a male co-signer was a barrier for all women not addressed until the 1970s. unknown books

Original brown covers typed paper label; black paper leaves. Covers a bit worn corners heavily so. Minor soiling to contents a few photos with some light silver mirroring. Images each with typed captions in the negative. A handsome vernacular vacation album with images taken by a skilled photographer with a keen eye for composition and lighting. The cover label indicates trips to Chicago Virginia Beach New Orleans Houston San Antonio Tucson and Phoenix over the course of three years. The album opens with several handsome panoramic shots of the Chicago skyline and Grant Park before moving on to scenes of sand dunes at Virginia Beach. The remaining forty leaves however show images of New Orleans and the Southwest all captured in artistic detail. Among the more interesting scenes are "Civil War Tenements - Church Street - New Orleans"; "At Twilight the Old Mission Concepcion San Antonio - Texas"; "U.S. Veterans Hospital - Tucson". There are many sweeping scenes of desert scenery and cactus some well-composed tourist shots in San Antonio at the zoo and Brackenridge Park and a series of three images of the Rodeo Parade in Tucson in 1930 showing the cowboys cowgirls and "Indians" marching in the parade. There are also street scenes in each city documenting the growing urban landscape and its buildings. One such shows the Alamo and is captioned "The famous Alamo and the Medical Arts Building. The old and the new - San Antonio Texas." Though the photographer is unidentified he has taken a self-portrait in Audubon Park in New Orleans which shows a middle-aged man in spectacles wearing a fedora and a plaid suit. An unusually nice vernacular photo album comprised of sharp and artistic photographs documenting scenes of tourism and travel in the late 1920s. unknown books
1914réf. 3378Various locations in Southern California and Hawaii 1914. About very good. Sixty-one leaves illustrated with 214 mounted silver gelatin photographs most with manuscript annotations in white ink; plus numerous mounted postcards menus and assorted ephemera. Oblong quarto. Contemporary black textured limp cloth over boards. Edges a bit chipped and tattered inelegant black tape repairs to spine. First leaf detached contents otherwise clean. A wonderful annotated vernacular photograph album documenting a well-to-do family's vacation to Hawaii via brief stops along the West Coast in 1914. The album opens with a group image of the travelers in San Francisco numbering around twenty-two men women and children captioned "Southern California - Honolulu." This is followed by several pages picturing their initial journey from Seattle down to San Pedro Los Angeles and San Diego before they departed for Honolulu on the S.S. Matsonia on June 17. A passenger list is included and many of the images are captioned with the names of the subjects providing a nice opportunity for identifying the travelers by cross-referencing the passenger list. The group spends their vacation time at the Sea Side Hotel on Waikiki Beach in bathing houses and on the beach visiting local businesses plantations and other hotels surfing fishing and more. Through the course of the album much of the landscape of Waikiki is featured providing a snapshot of the hotel and details of its surroundings along with shots of a "Native Village" sugar cane fields and a plantation pineapple fields street views of Honolulu a picnic for "Kids of all nations" at Waikiki the Port of Honolulu and more. The album also features a few early images of surfing at Waikiki Beach. In mid-July true to the title of the album the group heads back across the Pacific Ocean aboard the R.M.S. Niagara after just one month. Most notable among the photographs are about thirty risqué images of local Hawaiian women interspersed throughout. The pictures of the "Native Girls" often feature them topless or scantily clad identifying them with additional captions such as "Hawaiian Beauty" "Maidens bathing" "Girls" "Hula Hula Dancers" and "The Ex. Queen of Hawaii." One group shot shows ten Hawaiian women eating fish captioned "'Lunau' sic Lu'au or Native feast." Another side-view image of a naked Hawaiian woman is annotated "The Natives are a sturdy race of people." There are also numerous images featuring other indigenous Hawaiian people in a variety of settings including a couple of images showing a "Hawaiian boy climbing a cocoa nut palm" two pictures of "Native fisher boys" a "Native hut" "Hawaiian kiddies" a "Native canoeist" a "Group of Natives" a "Native Priest - looks as if he had been fasting for some time" and images showing "Natives selling 'Leis' for departing visitors" and "Native 'Leis' vendors on Honolulu." The images of the Hawaiian women as well as the men combined with the captions provide an opportunity for further studying the ways in which affluent American mainlanders have traditionally viewed indigenous Hawaiians and other native peoples encountered throughout the world. In addition to the passenger list mentioned above the ephemeral items include shipboard menus a program for an onboard concert newspaper clippings cigar labels and postcards. The latter includes a series of forty-one vibrantly-colored postcards illustrated with Hawaiian fish. An interesting travel album detailing a trip to Hawaii at the outset of the First World War with many notable observations on indigenous peoples in Honolulu especially the young women of the island. unknown books

1840réf. List2979Perrysburg Ohio 1840. Single three-page letter measuring 7 ½ x 12 ½ inches. Some stains folded with small tears at folds and tear at seal; overall near fine. Joseph Badger 1757–1846 was the first missionary to be sent to the Connecticut Western Reserve.1 He served in the Continental Army received a degree from Yale and was sent to Ashtabula County by the Connecticut Missionary Society in 1802. He retired in about 1833 after many years of organizing schools and churches around the Western Reserve plus a stint as a brigade chaplain during the War of 1812. Abigail Ely was Badger’s second wife; they married in 1819. The two write here to a widowed friend Harriet Lyon and her children in Gustavus Ohio. They discuss the importance of singing to religious work and of teaching children to sing and describe their living situation—on a farm nearby to some of their children who help them out. They also briefly complain about the quality of ministry in the area writing that the situation: “is exceedingly dark; one Church has a Minister worse than none; Six others have no Minister. . Much of the preaching that comes along occationally is calculated to excite the super-ficial affections of the mind without reaching the heart or enlightening the understanding.” Of interest to historians of Ohio and religion in the Western Reserve. 1 “Badger Joseph” in Encyclopedia of Cleveland History accessed March 20 2025 https://case.edu/ech/articles/b/badger-joseph. unknown books
