réf. 41384Printed folio document 10-1/4" x 15-1/2." Completed in ink manuscript. Signed by the President S. N. Felton and Secretary Chas. Hinchman of the Western Land Association. Docketed on the verso with manuscript release of portion of a mortgage from the Association. Usual folds Very Good plus. A Jay Cooke project to give him access to the lands along a Minnesota Railroad. "One of the projects growing out of Jay Cooke's connection with the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad was the 'Western Land Association of Minnesota.' The purpose of this company was similar to George Francis Train's Credit Foncier of America. It sought to exploit Duluth and the town sites and land privileges along the right of way of a projected railroad. The first published report of the Western Land Association was made in 1871. The company had received cash of $200000 for its shares. Its receipts consisted of $97321 for real estate sold and $21166 in interest on deferred payments and it paid out $182390 for real estate purchases. But the most important item mentioned in the report is the stock interest acquired in the company by the Northern Pacific Railroad. In return for an agreement of the Northern Pacific to fix its eastern terminus at Duluth and to connect with the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad the Western Land Association sold 2000 shares of its stock for $120000 to the 'Lake Superior and Puget Sound Company' the real estate subsidiary of the Northern Pacific. "The president of the company Mr. Samuel M. Felton said 'The company will soon be attacked by the Press and in the Courts as a monopoly and being the creature of the law may be subject to continual and expensive annoyance.' Moreover 'the Western Land Association has now accomplished as a holder of a large number of town lots the object for which it was organized and kept out of the hands of unprogressive speculators the property they would otherwise have held to the detriment of all large plans of improvement". Some small chips along a few splits with minimal loss. Light tanning scattered spotting. Good. The original grant for this land was to Nehemiah Phippeny who lost title for nonpayment of taxes. The land was sold to Lothrop Lewis of Fairfield Connecticut on May 27 1805. On the verso are hand written transfers of the same piece of property: from Lothrop Lewis to William Hawley of Woodbury January 21 1806; from Hawley to Nehemiah Dibble of Stamford February 7 1806; from Dibble to Zalmon & Seymour Wildman of Danbury October 20 1806. There is also a voided transaction crossed out from Hawley to William Lamson of Waterbury January 31 1806. In 1800 the State of Connecticut granted to her citizens who were sufferers by fire caused by the British during the Revolutionary War a half million acres of land lying within the State of Ohio which was to be taken off the west part of the "Western Connecticut Reserve" now embraced in the counties of Huron and Erie. By an 1803 Act of Ohio the sufferers were incorporated as "The proprietors of the half million acres of land lying south of Lake Erie called 'Sufferers' Land'." The Act required management of the Company by a Board of Directors. The Board was to locate and survey the granted land and to partition it among the different claimants. This part of the Western Reserve was inhabited by Indians who engaged in warfare with the settlers. On July 4 1805 a treaty between the United States and the Wyandot Ottawa Chippewa Munsee and Delaware Shawanee and Pattawatamy nations was signed whereby those Indian nations in consideration of $18916.68 released their claims to all the lands owned by the company. unknown books

Very good. 30 leaves illustrated with 270 photographs of various sizes including two multi-panel panoramic photographs each leaf with a single printed caption identifying the subjects or location. Oblong folio. Contemporary red leather gilt titles on front cover. Some scuffing and abrading to covers a few short edge tears. Internally clean. A handsome annotated photograph album produced to commemorate a railroad trip by a well-to-do party of travelers from Kansas City through New Mexico Arizona Colorado California and up the West Coast to British Columbia and Alberta in 1925. The first photograph in the album is a panorama of a large group of well-dressed men and women at the Mission Hills Country Club in Kansas City captioned in the negative indicating the traveling party emanated from Kansas City as part of the "N.E.L.A. Red Special Delegation to San Francisco Convention" who were "Guests of K.C.P and L Co" presumably the Kansas City Power & Light Company. The second and much larger panoramic photograph is comprised of fifteen 5-x-8-inch photographs picturing the travelers posed outside the numerous Pullman cars that comprise the Red Special. The preponderance of the photographs are organized by location generally five or six photographs per page with a single printed caption per page mostly indicating the location. The body of photographs begins with facing pages of images featuring the travelers and some scenery in Colorado Springs and Garden of the Gods in Colorado. A sampling of subsequent groups of photographs feature the travelers at Pike's Peak Albuquerque the Grand Canyon San Bernardino Redlands Los Angeles Santa Barbara Del Monte Yosemite Valley Glacier Point Mariposa Grove San Francisco Shasta the Columbia River Victoria Vancouver Canadian Rockies Lake Louise Lake Agnes Moraine Lake Johnson's Canyon Banff and other locations. The album closes with four pages of photos picturing "Fellow Travelers Here and There" and a group photo of "The Train Crew." The latter photograph is the only one featuring African Americans who were likely working as Pullman porters on the Red Special. A wide-ranging series of photographs featuring much of the American and Canadian West before the Great Depression. unknown books
1921réf. 6148Various locations 1921. Very good. Twelve leaves with 106 photographs. Images a mix of 4.25 x 2.5 and 5.5 x 3.5 inches. Oblong quarto. Original black cloth string tied. Black paper leaves photos glued down. Images captioned in ink throughout on the photo. Minor wear. An interesting photographic record of drilling for oil in Wyoming and Montana. The images which are all captioned in a useful fashion depict oil rigs and wells the drillers at work and occasionally the family's on whose land they are drilling. The album opens with images from Upton Wyoming. Upton is located in the northeast corner of the state near Deadwood South Dakota; its newspaper offices burned down in 1926 leaving few early records of the town. Images depict the boiler "to go on School Sec 16"; the Gose home and oil field as well as the Goses; as well as rigs identified as ready to move from one site to another. Several images later in the album depict an accident on the Gose field which decapitated Vernie Moody -- two images show an X on the spot where he died under the depicted wreckage. Other images show work at Osage Gillette and Salt Creek Wyoming including one of a gushing well at Salt Creek in 1921. Images of work at the Broadview Dome near Billings Montana indicate "no oil near here" and "their well my test." There are also some nice views of Main Street in Harding Montana and Gillette Wyoming. A brief but fascinating and insightful glimpse of the oil life in the northern plains. unknown books
1905réf. 3538Copper River Valley Ak 1905. Very good. Forty-five printing-out paper photographs between 3.25 x 3.25 and 4 x 6 inches plus three real photo postcards. Minor wear a few creases occasional light soiling. A unique collection of almost fifty images capturing scenes in and around Copper Center in the Copper River Valley of Alaska in the years after gold was first found there in 1898. The images document pioneers panning for gold running dog sled teams posed in front of early wooden buildings in a bleak snow-covered landscape and more as well as capturing shots of a riverside mill a wooden bridge scenery on the Copper River and the majesty of the surrounding forests. A handful of the images capture pioneer women and children posed for the camera in winter clothing worn to combat the bitter Alaskan winters. One image pictures three men and two dogs standing outside the Hotel Holman an early Copper Center roadhouse that began in a tent but was opened in a wooden structure in 1899; the present image captures the post-1899 wooden structure. The Holman Hotel was established in July 1898 by Copper Center's first resident Andrew Holman in order to provide shelter for prospectors on their way to the Klondike gold fields. Copper Center is located northeast of Anchorage and served as a brief but important way station for gold prospectors in southeastern Alaska; one image here apparently pictures the early riverside settlement or is perhaps an early view of Anchorage. A rare view of Alaskan life in an uncommonly-seen settlement during the first decade of the 20th century. unknown books
