1967rif. 465j2365Toronto: The Ryerson Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1967. First Edition. Hardcover. "Describes the efforts of one tough individual to serve his people his church and his country. The Reverend Peter Reginald Kelly D.D. was born to an aristocratic Haida family in the Queen Charlotte Islands in 1885. Sent to a Methodist boarding school by his deeply religious parents Kelly developed into a leader of men. In 1910 he was selected to head a delegation of more than a hundred Indian leaders who met in Victoria to discuss their grievances with the provincial government. In 1913 he became the first Indian admitted to Columbian College and was later ordained a minister in the Methodist church. For 16 years he and his wife were in charge of the Thomas Crosby a famous mission and mercy boat operating on one of the wildest parts of the B.C. coast. This fascinating portrait of Indian society in the midst of upheaval gives insiight into the life and thought of a remarkable man. It paints a true picture of a highly principled individual who fought to gain equality for his people by wiping out ignorance on both sides of the colour barrier." - dust jacket. 164 pages. "The Cassiar land district occupies the north-west section of B.C. and has an area of about one hundred thousand square miles. There is no literature about the Cassiar unless one admits as such the reports of government officials and mining engineers. Even the Indians display ignorance concerning certain districts. This book represents a year's sojourn in the central and northern parts of the Cassiar 1930-31. My aim has been to distil from a mass of particular experiences the general spirit of the Cassiar and so to arrange and select actual impressions that they become significant and typical of the country." - Preface.
