1758réf. 3848Rare French & Indian War Magazine with an Early American Political Cartoon The American Magazine and Monthly Chronicle was only the fourth American magazine to last for at least a year. It was published by William Bradford and edited by the Reverend William Smith provost of the College of Philadelphia. Mott describes the Magazine as "bold and outspoken and sincerely devoted to liberty and the orderly development of an American civilization." The Grolier Club's Online Exhibit of the Steven Lomazow collection of American magazines notes that the Magazine was "published in support of the British political position against the French on the North American continent during the Seven Years' War" and that its purpose "is revealed in its motto Prævalebit æquoir "the more equitable will prevail"". It was one of only two American magazines published during the French and Indian War. The title page of the magazine often not present features one of the first American political cartoons. The woodcut depicts a Native American with an Englishman on his right offering him a Bible and a roll of cloth and a Frenchman on his left offering him a tomahawk and a purse of money. Although Franklin's 1754 segmented snake drawing is often considered the first American political cartoon this image from The American Magazine is certainly more highly developed and graphically impressive. The contents of this issue very clearly highlight the tension between Pennsylvania governor William Denny and the Quaker-controlled Assembly with respect to providing troops to support the British defense efforts in the southern colonies. Denny's bitter message to the Assembly is accompanied by a proclamation raising a force of 2700 troops "to act in conjunction with a body of his majesty's forces and those of Maryland Virginia and the Lower Counties of Delaware in such operations as shall be carried on and prosecuted by his majesty's commander in chief in these parts." p. 348. Also in this issue is an installment of "The Watchman" a series of anti-French essays. Toward the end of this installment: "Rise then my Countrymen! . rise to take vengeance on a perfidious nation for their breach of treaties their detestable cruelties and their horrid murders! . think of Monongahela Fort William Henry and those scenes of savage death where the unburied bones of your fellow citizens lie strewed upon the plain." p. 354. An important and uncommon early American magazine. References: Lomazow American Periodicals: 6. Mott A History of American Magazines 1741-1850: pp. 80-82. Richardson A History of Early American Magazines 1741-1789: pp. 98-123. For the title woodcut: Hamilton Early American Book Illustrators and Wood Engravers: 35. Lewis Guide to Engravings in American Magazines 1741-1810: pp 1 47. Condition: Engraved title page present; the impression of the woodcut is much sharper than often found. Disbound. Scattered light foxing. Very good. ICN 7763. https://grolierclub.omeka.net/exhibits/show/american-magazines/am-we-the-people Printed and Sold by William Bradford.

1888- Paris 1888 et 1889, 29x40cm, en feuilles. - WILLETTE, Adolphe & OTHERS Le Pierrot Paris 1888 and 1889, 29 x 40 cm, unbound. First edition. An almost complete set of this rare satirical literary journal headed and illustrated by Adolphe Willette. 49 issues from 6 July 1888 to 20 September 1889, each comprising two folio leaves, the first page with a lithograph by Willette, some with caricatures on page three. With Emile Goudeau as its editor-in-chief, this journal, nominally published on Fridays (though not always actually published then) includes poetry, ads, and news in brief, but its real value lies in the illustrations, done exclusively for it by Willette. A little light foxing and small tears to margin not touching images or text. Adolphe Willette was an inseparable part of Montmartre, where he was responsible for the decoration of a number of cabarets, bistrots and the famous Moulin Rouge. A painter first and foremost, he exhibited at the Chat Noir, having helped to found it. He later worked with a number of newspapers, including le Rire and l'Assiette au beurre, before establishing le Pierrot. A divisive figure, he stood as an Anti-Semitic candidate in the municipal elections in Paris in 1889. He proclaimed himself first President of the Republic of Montmartre, a philanthropic association aimed at helping the children of that quartier. [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.
