1850réf. List2859Newbury Ohio 1850. Six letters. Excellent. John Marvin Bacheldor 1826–deceased was born in Newbury Ohio and attended Williams College in Williamstown Massachusetts. He would later run the Rural Home Family School for Boys in Pownal Vermont and then Bacheldor’s Business College in York Pennsylvania. His parents Sarah 1800–1876 and John Bacheldor 1786–1858 were New England farmers who moved to Ohio sometime before 1825. Offered here are six letters from Sarah and John to John Marvin from the latter’s time as a student at Williams. The letters are mainly updates on the family farm and on the various illnesses spreading throughout the region – at the time smallpox and scarlet fever were epidemic though Sarah Bacheldor also notes several cases of “brain fever.” She mentions an intriguing county-wide school meeting: “3 schools met at Centre Church I suppose the 4th Fuller Town Sc think us so joined to slavery they dare not even meet in the same house with us O when will people cast out the before they say brother . Perhaps those who are branded as pro slavery would do as much to liberate the slaves as their accusers I dont think we need to go down South to find something to differ about”. September 10 1847 Though Ohio was an early abolisher of slavery and famously a stop on the Underground Railroad the issue was far from settled among its residents. Sarah also mentions but does not elaborate on some strife with both the Baptist and Methodist churches: “You may wish to know something about our religious prospects they are not very encouraging The Baptist Association met at the Centre but I guess they had more strife & contention than ardent desire for the salvation of souls & there was no blessing. The Methodists had a quarterly meeting the last of June & yet we were not revived It is a time of great stupidity in all this region truly”. July 14 1848 Overall a look at life and attitudes in rural Ohio in the mid-19th century. unknown books

1957réf. 229431957. Muller June. Tim's Temper 1957 presents an illustrated Christian instructional narrative centered on African American childhood and family life within mid-twentieth-century religious publishing. Produced in Wichita Kansas the booklet supports research into African American visual representation Christian pedagogy and postwar cultural constructions of Black family and moral development. At a time when Black figures were often marginalized or stereotyped in religious media the work places a Black child and his घरेलestic environment at the center of moral storytelling aligning spiritual instruction with everyday lived experience. Muller June. Tim's Temper: An Illustrated Gospel Story Booklet. Wichita Kansas: Living Stories Inc. 1957. Octavo. Illustrated wrappers. The booklet consists of sequential full-color illustrations depicting a young Black boy in domestic and interpersonal settings including a portrait view sweeping a floor reading aloud to an older woman seated in a rocking chair and interacting with another boy in scenes of conflict and reconciliation. A concluding composition presents two boys with an adult woman in a frontal grouping emphasizing family authority and resolution. The imagery focuses on gesture posture and facial expression to convey emotional development and behavioral correction while interior settings and clothing situate the figures within a working- to middle-class domestic environment. The narrative structure integrates moral instruction with scenes of literacy discipline and play. Illustrated booklet. Original wrappers. Octavo format. Light edge wear and surface soiling; overall good condition. Produced during a period of expanding but still limited representation of African Americans in children's and religious print culture the booklet provides direct visual evidence of efforts to incorporate Black childhood into evangelical teaching materials offering value for the study of race religion and visual culture in the United States. unknown books
1772réf. 6141Mexico City: August 6 1772. About very good. 3 leaves. Small folio. Stitched at left margin. Previously folded. Light edge wear and foxing. An official manuscript document dated August 6 1772 granting license from Mexican religious and civic authorities to a small parish in what is now the state of Hidalgo for the celebration of Mass and other official sacraments in their newly constructed chapel. The initial Spanish text reads "En atencion delo que se representa en esta Consulta concedemos uno permiso para que esta Capilla de la hacienda ò rancheria nombrada Xigui se celebre el santo sacrificio dela Misa en todos los dias festivos del año." The main body of the text goes on to describe the chapel the parish residents and the specific permissions it has for rites it can perform. Of particular note the text says that the resident population of the hacienda is only native Mexicans and numbering eight hundred people of all ages -- "Siendo el Numero de sus Moradores solamente de Indios y conforme a el Padron General llega su Numero asta ocho cientoas Personas de todas Edades." The name of the hacienda Xigui likely makes its location the modern-day farming community Santa Maria Xigui in central Hidalgo. A very interesting record of the administration of Catholic Indian worship in rural 18th-century Mexico. August 6 unknown books

Contemporary manuscript rubric and small ink stamp. small patch of ink burn causing separation along rubric line. A few tiny wormholes slightly affecting text. Light tanning minor foxing. An otherwise unrecorded 19th-century Cuban broadside decree announcing the rules for celebrations in Guanabacoa during "las fiestas de su Patrona" taking place on August 14 & 15 1888. The patron saint of Guanabacoa then a small town just outside Havana and now an outlying district of the city is Our Lady of the Assumption and August 15 is the Feast of the Assumption. This broadside prints eight articles the first of which allow games and "diversiones públicas" but prohibit games of chance and gambling of any kind and authorize the erection of food and drink stalls in public places that do not impede public traffic. Permission must be obtained from the municipal magistrates for balls and parties in private houses; shooting guns rockets and fireworks is still strictly forbidden but the lighting of torches is allowed during the saint's procession. Other rules regulate vehicular traffic cafés and restaurants horse races ball games and theatrical performances. A very interesting document of municipal regulation for popular religious events in Cuba during the late-19th century. unknown books
