1889rif. 50236New York: John B. Alden 1889. 16mo. Staple-bound printed paper wrappers; 6-298pp ads. Marginal staining to upper margin of last three leaves else a tight clean respectable copy free of markings or excessive wear. One of hundreds if not thousands of nicely-produced but inexpensive books and booklets issued by populist publisher John Berry Alden whose "Publishing Revolution" of the 1880s developed the potential for high-volume low-priced books for the masses paving the way for such successors as Haldeman-Julius and Henry Altemus. Such publishers favored works that were out of copyright and by issuing titles under the guise of serial publications such as Alden's "Elzevir Library" here allowed mass-market publishers to take advantage of highly favorable postal rates for periodicals. Though issued in the hundreds of thousands Alden's publications were never intended for a bibliophile audience and tended not to survive - OCLC notes only a single location for this title for example PENN. Account of the life of Jemima Wilkinson 1752-1819 the Rhode Island-born Quaker and Evangelist who claimed after a long illness to have died and been risen from the dead. Through her preaching she became known as the "Universal Friend" creating a Shaker-like sect that practiced celibacy and poverty on a massive property she named "Jerusalem." Some have argued that Wilkinson was an imposter who accrued vast wealth from her followers Howes describes her as "the first religious charlatan of her sex in America". Indeed the sect would not survive after her death. This work first published in 1821 attributed to David Hudson SABIN 33485 and HOWES H-761. 1828rif. 16639New York: Daniel Fanshaw 1828. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 8vo 10 pp disbound. Light foxing all else very good. Foundational document of the General Union which according to one modern scholar "marked a new departure in the annals of American reform. Like the American Temperance Society upon which it was closely modeled the General Union was intended to unite like-minded individuals from throughout the United States in a single cause. According to Massachusetts reformer William Lloyd Garrison this egalitarian approach to reform was destined to make the General Union 'the most efficient instrument in the cause of religion and public morality ever put into practice in any age and country. The linchpin of the General Union strategy was the Sabbatarian Pledge.Just as the American Temperance Society promoted complete abstinence from the evils of drink so the General Union would promote complete abstinence from the evils of Sabbath-breaking. By taking the Sabbatarian pledge General Union members bound themselves not only to abstain from all work travel and recreation on the Sabbath but also to boycott all transportation companies that operated on this day" John Spreading the News pp. 180-81. This pamphlet includes the General Union's Constitution minutes of its first convention held May 6. 1828 and a list of all delegates and officers as well as an address to the people of the United States on the importance of Sabbath observance in the maintenance of civil liberty. 1773rif. 028953America 1773. Manuscript. Good. folio 5 ff. 163 5 pp. original manuscript bound in contemporary vellum front cover with title inked in early hand; binding darkened stained and rubbed with vellum cracked and peeling over spine. Sewing loosening; a number of leaves separated. Pages age-toned with minor offsetting edges of first few leaves tattered with the lower portion of title leaf chipped away. Apparently unpublished 18th century American manuscript dealing with natural religion the nature of prophecy and revelation and the definition of "real Christianity" vs. "Orthodoxy." The author seems to have been at least contemplating publication as a preliminary advertisement offers the usual disclaimer regarding a work "never intended. for the Eye of the Public" that might yet "accidentally fall into private Hands" of "Strangers." That advertisement is signed "W. D." with "America 1773." Supplied below in a slightly smaller finer lettering; text on p. 112 refers in passing to "this 28th Dec.r 1773." References to "modern" or current events are slim to nonexistent; but Liebnitz appears unfavorably. The author also cites more approvingly Drs. Clarke Sherlock and Burnet - along with "Machiavel" on the nature of governments. Gil Blas is mentioned as a history that might be viewed as truth by the credulous ages hence; Shaftesbury Voltaire and Locke are treated of in the last pages. The text is reasonably but not excessively erudite there are occasional forays into Greek and Latin; the work's tone is often combative with the author's negative opinions of much Jewish philosophy and doctrine bluntly expressed. books
