From the Preface: "The present work was originally written as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Oxford. Little has been changed in the body of the text but I have added an introductory relation of the temporal power from the time of the Donations. I am well aware how inadequate this relation is by reason of limited space to express it of limited time to write it and of the general intractability of the subject. But the theme of the termporal power is not often treated in English and a brief account of this sort seemed necessary before entering on such a detailed work.". First Edition. Hardcover.
