1930réf. 149381930. Early twentieth century photograph documenting the Hajj pilgrimage at Mount Arafat near Mecca one of the central ritual sites of the annual Islamic pilgrimage required of Muslims able to undertake the journey. The gathering at Mount Arafat often called the "Standing at Arafat" forms the spiritual climax of the Hajj and brings together pilgrims from across the Islamic world for collective prayer and reflection. Photographic documentation of the pilgrimage during the early twentieth century provides visual evidence of the scale of participation in the ritual and of the sacred geography surrounding Mecca before the large scale infrastructural expansions of the later twentieth century. Original black and white photograph depicting thousands of Muslim pilgrims assembled on the slopes and summit of Mount Arafat also known as the Mount of Mercy outside Mecca. Circa 1930. The image records the second day of the Hajj pilgrimage when pilgrims gather at the site for communal prayer and supplication. Arabic writing appears in the lower right corner of the image. The photograph measures approximately 3.5 x 5.5 inches. The Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca represents one of the five pillars of Islam and has drawn pilgrims from across the Middle East Africa Central Asia and Southeast Asia for centuries. By the early twentieth century photography had become an important medium for documenting Islamic religious life and the movement of pilgrims across the Arabian Peninsula. Images of Mount Arafat are particularly significant because the site marks the central moment of the pilgrimage when participants gather for collective prayer believed to commemorate the Prophet Muhammad's final sermon and the broader Islamic tradition associated with the location. Light age toning and minor handling wear; overall very good condition. A clear early photographic record of one of the most important ritual gatherings in the Islamic world. unknown
réf. 9259At beginning of scroll is a map 440 mm. in length depicting the 66 province names of Japan each with a temple with colored indications of bodies of water requiring boats. Woodblock-printed scroll on paper 250 x 2975 mm. endpaper at front covered on outside with blue paper with manuscript label: “Hono daijomyoten rokujurokubu ryaku engi” “Donation of Lotus Sutra to 66 Sacred Places. History” wooden core roller. At end in trans.: “Edo. 23 May 1706” but this may be a later printed edition of an early scroll or manuscript. In Edo Japan travel restrictions relaxed allowing the population greater freedom to travel domestically. One of the main reasons to travel was to participate in pilgrimages to sacred sites throughout Japan. A number of pilgrimage circuits developed: one of the earliest was the “Japan Tour” or “Japan Pilgrimage” which included 66 sacred sites one for each of the 66 provinces of the island nation. The “Japan Tour” the most popular in the 18th century “involved the offering of a copy of the Lotus Sutra to major shrines or temples throughout the sixty-six provinces of Japan.”–Shinno Toshikazu “Journeys Pilgrimages Excursions. Religious Travels in the Early Modern Period” in Monumenta Nipponica Vol. 57 No. 4 Winter 2002 p. 452 & see the rest of this fine article English trans. by Laura Nenzi. The map at the beginning of our scroll has contemporary hand-coloring: green to indicate bodies of water and the kinds of boats required to cross to adjacent islands and land masses; red to highlight the roadways. The name of each province is printed within circles. Indications of north on top and south on bottom are given. Our scroll comprises seven sheets each numbered in the upper right-hand corner. The map is found on the first sheet. The remaining six sheets contain text describing the background and history of the “Japan Tour” and the sites arranged by region. In fine condition preserved in a wooden box. We do not find this in WorldCat. unknown

Mr. Bailey enlisted the help of the Pilgrimage Garden Club which has been organizing tours of these homes since 1932 and the result is a glorious celebration of Natchez and its long tradition of great American cooking.
