1973réf. 43875Delhi India Motilal Barasidass 1973. Hardcover First Edition Thus so stated. First Edition Thus so stated. Very Good in Very Good DJ: Both book and DJ show indications of moderate use. The Book shows the former owner's not unattractive rubber-stamped logo and name at the front free endpaper; light wear to the extremities; slight spine lean; mild rubbing; faint soiling; the binding is of the usual less than perfectly secure quality of these Indian productions but is a sewn binding and is holding together quite securely; the text is clean. The DJ mild rubbing; moderate wear to the extremities with small loss to chips at the corner tips and head and heel of the backstrip and a half-inch chip at the top of the rear panel; some faint soiling to the white backgroud field of the rear panel; the price is intact; mylar-protected. Shows moderate wear but remains about as structurally sound as you will find in these Motital Banarsidass productions and remains tightly bound. A clean sturdy presentable copy in a like DJ. 2023About The Book : The origin and evolution of this work will form an interesting fascicle of the history of India during Lord Curzon's regime, as it was he who succeeded in creating the Ethnographic Survey of India, in the face of strong opposition from certain quarters. His Lordship's name will remain in the pages of the future history of India as the greatest patron of the science of Ethnography of the vast continent of India. Sir Herbert Risley was selected for the important duties of Honorary Director of Ethnography for India. It was a happy choice, and through his able and scholarly directions a tremendous mass of the most fascinating details of the social life of India has been collected. I was first appointed Honorary Assistant Superintendent of Ethnography to the Government of Bombay, and subsequently Assistant Director of Ethnography for India under Sir Herbert. He asked me to write some articles for the 'Indian Antiquary' at Sir Richard lemple's request. This was the beginning of the work I now call Hindu Holidays and Ceremonials. When Sir Herbert was promoted to the Secretaryship of the Government of India, Sir Edward Gait was appointed Census Commissioner. I continued working under both the officers and in that joint capacity submitted some of my articles to him, as well as to the Honourable Mr. R. Burn, I.C.S., who succeeded him. About The Author : Balkrishna Atmaram Gupte (1851–1925) was the assistant Director of Ethnography of India under Sir Herbert Hope Risley and later an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London. He was the author of "Hindu Holidays And Ceremonials"and several other books. Later he was a professor at Calcutta.
