1889ref. 6941New York: Phillips & Hunt 1889. First edition. 8vo 3 291pp plus 4 ads at rear. Beige textured cloth backed parchment boards stamped in gilt and blind. Some rubbing and soiling corners worn. Clean internally and very good. A strange book with a fun title which tells the cautionary tale of a hypochondriac woman how she brings down those around her and finally rids herself of her condition. She does this more or less through an odd combination of mind and faith-healing. Dr. Homer H. Moore was a Methodist clergyman and author of such other titles as Matter Life & Mind: Their Essence Phenomena & Relations examined with Reference to the Nature of Man & the Problem of His Destiny; and The Anatomy of Atheism As Demonstrated in the Light of the Constitution and Laws of Nature. A blurb from the Methodist Review September 1889 states: "Dr. Moore. has discovered the secret of much of the sickness that afflicts the human family and offers in this work a prescription which. will result in a cure. through a common-sense belief in one's health with suitable exercise and an abundance of nourishing food. The professional sick. must be treated not as they desire but according to the facts." In the author's preface he mentions all the people he may offend with his book including doctors. It does seem to be a text of belief-based medical denial. OCLC cites only 4 holdings. . Phillips & Hunt unknown

1819ref. 59962Paris: Chez Arthus Bertrand 1819. First edition in French first published in English London 1816. 8vo. 4 volumes: 4 lxxiv 309; 4 346; 4 432; 4 517 pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait to volume one. This work contains a portion of the king's autobiography the original of which is now lost. Some controversy exists over who actually wrote the book and it is variously attributed to a number of authors; Clarke 1766-1834 the biographer of Lord Nelson was certainly involved in its publication. James 1633-1701 the second surviving son of Charles I served as James II King of England and Ireland and James VII King of Scotland 1685-1688 when he was deposed by the Glorious Revolution. Some foxing but a very good copy. Somewhat later French green calf spine faded uniformly to brown gilt ornaments and labels on spine marbled endpapers and edges. 7210. Chez Arthus Bertrand unknown

The Miles Medical Company was founded by Dr Franklin L. Miles 1845-1929 in Elkhart Indiana in 1884 but he sold his interest within a couple years. The Miles company produced many popular remedies including Dr Miles Nervine Dr Miles Pills and Dr Miles Alternative Compound. Competition was fierce within the world of quack medicine with many companies producing advertising gimmicks trade cards or almanacs to promote their cures. While some quack medicines did have active ingredients which alleviated symptoms many were either benign or caused harm. Dr. Miles' New Heart Cure which came out in 1888 supposedly contained the dangerous compound digitalis. Those who sold the medicines were called "snake oil salesmen" using enthusiastic and deceptive sales techniques including "fire and brimstone" sermons theatrical productions and confidence tricks. Today quackery ephemera is highly collectible. Dr. Miles Medical Company
