Il diario di Viani copre un periodo di circa 1 anno dal settembre 1720 all'agosto 1721 durante il quale il Legato Apostolico viaggiò da Lisbona ad alcune città della Cina avendo come base Macao. E' essenzialmente la cronaca di tortuose relazioni diplomatiche complicate da problemi di traduzione e dalla necessità di comunicare attraverso numerosi intermediari in quanto raramente l'Imperatore concedeva udienza ai visitatori stranieri. In testo contiene una gran massa di informazioni sulle difficoltà incontrate dai missionari nei loro tentativi di divulgare la fede cattolica. unknown
