2404PG016EMMANUELIS ALVARI E SOCIETATE JESU DE INSTITUTIONE GRAMMATICA LIBRI TRES Olim Ab Horatio Tursellino Ujusdem Societatis In Compendium Redacti Diligenter Restituti Mendis Innumeris Sublatis. MEDIOLANI MDCCLXX. 1770. Ex Typographia Josephi Marelli . Superiorum Facultati. In 12.º de 162x92 cm. EN In duodecimo twelvemo. 16.2x9.2 cm. iv 439 vii pp. Contemporary binding cartonised and covered with fancy paper. Illustrated with a portrait of Father Manuel Ãlvares hors-texte on the title page. Copy with an oleographic ownership stamp from Moreira de Sá on the title page with a library shelf mark on front pastedown with the number 2395. The first edition was published in 1572 and more than 600 editions followed around the world including Mexico China. Japan. The present edition is one of around 100 editions of the work in Italy published by the Jesuit humanist Oratio Torsellini who was the first commentator on Alvares' Grammar in Italy. Manuel Ãlvares wrote this masterpiece by order of Superior General Diego Lainez 1512-65 in 1564 later renewed by the new Superior General Francisco Borgia 1510-72 who ordered the book to be presented within six months as there was an urgent need to standardise teaching in Jesuit colleges. However it took the author another three years to complete the first part which was sent to Rome in 1570 and published in Venice in 1571. Ãlvares' grammar was adopted in the Jesuits' Ratio Studiorum and started a new era in Latin teaching. With an excellent balance between the norm and usage it realised the humanist concept of grammar and as well as being used in the original it was also translated into many languages such as German English Croatian Spanish Flemish French Italian Polish Portuguese and Chinese. It was fundamental to the development of Portuguese grammar and to the education of many missionaries who became great linguists pioneering the discovery and study of non-European languages. It was also the basis of the first literatures i.e. transliterations from other alphabets into the Latin alphabet and grammars of various languages of peoples from Brazil China India and Japan where a trilingual edition Latin Portuguese Japanese was published in Amakusa in 1594. It is the most widely published work written by a Portuguese and has exerted a profound and continuing influence throughout the world for more than 400 years although the ban on its use in teaching was imposed by the Marquis of Pombal in 1759 but this decision was disregarded in many European countries. The grammar is rational descriptive and systematises all linguistic issues in three areas which is why it is divided into three parts: De Etymologia which deals with etymology and morphology; De Syntaxi which deals with syntax and De Prosodia on prosody. Father Manuel Ãlvares Ribeira Brava Madeira 1526 - Évora 1583. Received his first holy orders on 11 August 1538 professed in the Society of Jesus at the Coimbra college on 4 June 1546. 1850rif. 0010080France. Good with no dust jacket. 1850. Ephemera. On offer is an outstanding example of the Catholic Churchs teachings at a grass-roots level in 19th century France. This beautiful handwritten sermon is titled Sermon de III Dimanche de Careme Sermon for the 3rd Sunday of Lent and notes that it is given by Monsieur le Cure the Parish Priest. The handwriting is small and clear and an excellent example of the penmanship of the time. The source of the sermon is unknown. There is no specific reference to a parish community or author. We do know from its title that it was written to be given at a mass on the 3rd Sunday of Lent. The Easter Season of Lent and Easter Sunday is the most important in the Catholic church more so than Christmas. An excerpt from the sermon: Les miracles que Dieu fait en notre faveire sont toujours des marques de la bonte et de la misericordie et les infirmites que JC aurit sont la figures des differentes maladies de notre ame .Translation: The miracles that God does in our favor are always marks of goodness and mercy and the infirmities that JC would have are the images of the different diseases of our soul.Throughout his text you can see where he has crossed out words and edited expressions. This was very much a living manuscript in his hands. For a social historian this is an excellent look into the world of the average French person and into the thought processes of the clergy who so dominated life in the small towns and villages of France in the 19th century. This manuscript measures 6.0 inches by 6.25 inches and contains 34 carefully handwritten pages. It is 100% complete. The manuscript is simply folded along a centre line. There is no cover but the pages are in fine condition. ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 34 pages . unknown

'Angela Ricci Lucchi describes her work as follows: "I was already very interested in the use of the media and I started a kind of 'investigation' later published by the Pari & Dispari editions which consisted of asking everyone a series of essential questions: what is the rose for you Among others I asked Zavattini who sent me a beautiful letter. And I also asked Jervant whom I had just met. I started sending this message in June 1974; the operation continues to this day. Known and unknown people responded to me. Anyone who received these letters could send their reply. I didn't make any critical choices. This collection is in fact ordered only according to the date of the postmarks. In the same period the artist created numerous experimental and avant-garde cinema short films the so-called "scented films" Alice scented with roses 1975 the screening of which is accompanied by the diffusion of aromatic essences that interact with the film. The work is exhibited at the Mart museum in Rovereto and in 2018 it was part of the exhibition dedicated to "Rosanna Chiessi. Pari&Dispari" by the MAMbo Museum of Modern Art of Bologna and published in the catalogue." pariedispari website See also: "Cos'è la rosa per te" by Filippo Perfetti. This essay offers a reinterpretation of the early artistic work of Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi through the lens of analogical thought exploring the meaning and structure of their initial creations. Starting from Ricci Lucchi's 1976 inquiry "Cos'è la rosa per te" it reconstructs an aesthetic and methodological path that intertwines fairy tale synesthesia and cataloging placing their work in dialogue with the contemporary scenes of independent cinema and visual art. The essay argues that for the two artists the film should be understood as a field of forces in which things are no longer fixed entities but relational nodes. In this light the question "cos'è la rosa per te" – "What is the rose for you" – becomes emblematic of a heuristic method based on plurality incompleteness and the tension between elements proposing analogy as the central epistemological structure of their artistic project.
