De cette rencontre naquit un certain nombre de méditations, que Robert Delavignette note et développe ici. Des souvenirs d'enfance et des souvenirs d'une carrière coloniale se matérialisent dans deux figures d'ouvriers: un Français, Le Marianneux, puddleur à la forge de Sainte-Colombe, un Africain, Birama, forgeron dans le Niger. C'est le monde en pleine évolution que Robert DELAVIGNETTE saisit, car Sainte-Colombe est le creuset où se forme au début du siècle un vaste groupement industriel, et Birama, forgeron ambulant, suivi de son griot, est déjà tout près d'ètre arraché à son groupe social. Enfin l'auteur examine un problème important de notre temps, mais avec tout le calme et le recul nécessaires: celui des prêtres-ouvriers.
