1836réf. 9235Annapolis MD: William M'Neir 1836. Wrappers. Very Good binding. Octavo. 77 3 pp. First edition. In contemporary plain wrappers. Wrappers are detached and chipped; contents are generally foxed; small and early institutional stamp in the bottom margin of one page deep in the pamphlet; minor crease throughout the pamphlet from a vertical fold; dog-eared pages. Quite a presentable copy of a scarce publication on the Baltimore Bank Riots of 1835 which grew out of the failure of the Bank of Maryland. There was a belief that its impending bankruptcy was anticipated by its officers leading to civil unrest. The issues at trial were whether Baltimore officials had reacted appropriately and adequately when unrest began and rioting actually broke out. This pamphlet gives numerous depositions as to events in the city during this extended period of civil violence. American Imprints identifies another issue of this with slight differences to the title page that was issued the same year. Despite there being two issues it remains remarkably rare in commerce. Henkels offered it in 1915; beyond this there are no other auctions or offerings noted by the usual sources. OCLC locates barely a dozen copies of both issues together. American Imprints 38812. 1852réf. 194391852. Acts of the General Assembly of Virginia for 1852 documents slave-state governance in antebellum Virginia providing evidence of the legal system through which racial control fiscal administration corporate authorization and transportation development operated before the Civil War. The statute titled "An Act to suppress Gambling by Negroes and white persons together" identifies interracial association as a matter of state regulation showing how Virginia law extended racial discipline beyond labor and movement into informal social contact. The volume supports research into African American legal history slavery-era governance Southern economic development and the relationship between racial restriction and state-directed modernization. Richmond: William F. Ritchie Public Printer 1852. First edition. 8vo. Half legal calf over marbled boards with spine label; 3 4-403 pages including index. The volume compiles the year's legislative acts including statutes on taxation fiscal policy corporate charters navigation companies steamship enterprises transportation infrastructure and social regulation. The gambling statute involving Black and white participants provides especially direct evidence of racial boundary-making in everyday law while the numerous provisions for navigation steamship and internal improvement companies demonstrate the process by which Virginia promoted commercial expansion and regional economic integration through legislative authorization. Crack at front board gutter with board still holding; moderate wear to leather and marbled boards; interior generally clean with expected toning. Overall very good. A substantial antebellum Virginia legal volume linking the mechanics of state government to the racial and economic priorities of a slaveholding society. unknown

1808réf. List2316Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin 1808. Letterpress broadside measuring 13 x 7 ¾ inches. Some slight toning near fine overall. Fine. A broadside announcing the candidates for the United States House of Representatives a list which includes Noah Webster. Webster received 212 votes in the preliminary election in May enough to get him a spot on the ballot but lost in the general election in a generally difficult time for Federalist politicians. Webster experienced a religious conversion during this period after being a not particularly devout Congregationalist earlier in his life and embraced the church completely perhaps due to the death of his infant son in 1806. Webster would run again for U.S. Representative in 1810 1812 and 1816 losing each time and eventually abandoned politics his last office held being in the Connecticut House of Representatives ending in 1807 shortly before his first campaign for national office. We find no record of this broadside in OCLC or other ephemera relating to Webster's political career in Connecticut in the trade. The collected acts from this session were published in octavo format but we find no other record of this broadside printing. Hudson and Goodwin unknown
