1871réf. 49789Philadelphia: Altemus & Co 1871. Very Good-. Philadelphia: Altemus & Co. ca. 1871. Thick quarto photo album 25cm; full custom embossed brown goat with steel and faux pearl decorative elements owner's name Smith M. Weed to upper cover in gilt steel clasps one missing all edges gilt; title page printed in gilt followed by 25ll. stiff card stock to which are mounted a hundred and ninety-eight 198 cartes de visite some captioned in ink many signed by the subject and others still identified as "dead" in pencil. Leather rubbed and worn at corners with loss at spine head all but two of the photographic windows filled; overall About Very Good images all in bright and near fine condition. Photo album of the New York lawyer and politician Smith M. Weed 1833-1920 who served on the New York State Assembly from 1865 to 1867 in 1871 and from 1873 to 1874. This album probably dates from 1871 one of the years Smith served on the Assembly that coincided with John T. Hoffman the first man pictured here serving as governor of New York. It is perhaps significant that Weed does not identify Hoffman by name but simply lists him as the Governor of New York--Hoffman was implicated as being part of the Tammany Hall Tweed Ring against which Weed was an outspoken critic. His report in favor of repealing the Erie Classification Act came within a vote of breaking up the Tweed and Erie Rings for which he was "regarded as an enemy of the then party-controlling influence. He was brutally assaulted by the notorious James Irving then a power with the 'Ring'" Life Sketches of Government Officers of Members of the Legislature of the State of New York 1873. Perhaps needless to say but still disappointing that Irving's signed CDV is not among those present here. As well as members of the Legislature there are also CDVs of men in its orbit including the Canal Commissioner two prison inspectors the governor's private secretary the head doorkeeper and the assistant doorkeeper and three reporters for the New York Sun the Associate Press and the Argus. An interesting photographic record of New York state politics in the era of the Tweed Ring. Altemus & Co unknown books

1852réf. 194391852. Acts of the General Assembly of Virginia for 1852 documents slave-state governance in antebellum Virginia providing evidence of the legal system through which racial control fiscal administration corporate authorization and transportation development operated before the Civil War. The statute titled "An Act to suppress Gambling by Negroes and white persons together" identifies interracial association as a matter of state regulation showing how Virginia law extended racial discipline beyond labor and movement into informal social contact. The volume supports research into African American legal history slavery-era governance Southern economic development and the relationship between racial restriction and state-directed modernization. Richmond: William F. Ritchie Public Printer 1852. First edition. 8vo. Half legal calf over marbled boards with spine label; 3 4-403 pages including index. The volume compiles the year's legislative acts including statutes on taxation fiscal policy corporate charters navigation companies steamship enterprises transportation infrastructure and social regulation. The gambling statute involving Black and white participants provides especially direct evidence of racial boundary-making in everyday law while the numerous provisions for navigation steamship and internal improvement companies demonstrate the process by which Virginia promoted commercial expansion and regional economic integration through legislative authorization. Crack at front board gutter with board still holding; moderate wear to leather and marbled boards; interior generally clean with expected toning. Overall very good. 1867réf. BK0152Barbados: Office of "The Official Gazette" No. 14 Broad Street 1867. 30 pp. with unnumbered index 42 pp. Half leather over cloth boards. Ink ownership inscription "W. Brandford Griffith / 1869" on a preliminary blank. Scattered foxing and light toning. A locally printed manual for the Barbados House of Assembly with the ownership inscription of William Brandford Griffith then both a member of the Assembly and the island's auditor-general. Griffith served in the Assembly from 1861 to 1874 and was appointed auditor-general in 1863; he subsequently held several other colonial offices before becoming governor of the Gold Coast in 1885. The rules numbered through 271 and accompanied by an extensive alphabetical index set out the conduct of the Assembly's public business. The index includes procedures for issuing election writs and returning the names of elected members to the governor and council together with the course to be followed when writs had not been executed. Although published well after emancipation these rules governed an Assembly whose electorate remained restricted by property qualifications. Free men of color had gained voting rights subject to those qualifications in 1831 and Samuel Jackman Prescod entered the Assembly in 1843. Planters and merchants nevertheless continued to dominate both the Assembly and the Legislative Council during the period in which Griffith served. 1944réf. 211521944. Japanese American incarceration photographs dating from World War II document civilian life and military presence at several internment and assembly centers established after the forced removal of Japanese Americans from the West Coast. Following Executive Order 9066 in 1942 more than 120000 people of Japanese ancestry were confined in temporary assembly centers and longer term relocation camps administered by the War Relocation Authority. The photographs record daily activities of men women and children within these camps and illustrate the physical environment of the barracks settlements created to house incarcerated civilians during the war. Archive contains six original silver gelatin photographs measuring approximately 2.5 × 2.75 inches to 3.5 × 5.75 inches. The images depict Japanese American families and individuals at Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming Camp Amache in Granada Colorado and Pomona Assembly Center in California. Several photographs show families gathered in front of barracks style housing units typical of the camps. One image from Amache shows a family of six standing on the steps of their assigned unit with the wooden barracks structure visible behind them. Another photograph from Pomona shows two United States soldiers seated on a storage trunk outside a camp building likely serving as patrol or security personnel. One image from Heart Mountain shows a military medic standing beside an ambulance truck while gesturing toward camp structures in the distance. Other photographs include a group portrait of Japanese American young men standing in front of a brick building possibly a school building within the camp and a separate image of the same individual standing beside a lake. Another photograph shows a young Japanese American girl playing on a see saw while families watch a sports game in the background with camp buildings visible beyond the field. Pomona Assembly Center served as one of the temporary detention facilities established in 1942 before incarcerated families were transferred to permanent camps such as Heart Mountain. Heart Mountain became the fourth largest relocation center eventually housing nearly fourteen thousand people while Amache in Colorado confined more than seven thousand internees the majority of whom were American citizens by birth. Living quarters in these camps consisted of small rooms within hastily constructed wooden barracks assigned to individual families. The photographs preserve small moments of social life and recreation within these confined communities illustrating how families attempted to maintain routines despite the conditions of incarceration. Photographs remain clear and well preserved with light age wear consistent with vernacular prints. Very good condition overall and a revealing visual record of Japanese American life within wartime relocation centers. unknown books
1932réf. 205181932. African American Religion Silver gelatin photograph of twenty-two African American congregates at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. 1932. Approx. 4.5" x 6.5". Photograph shows twenty-two congregates of varying ages twenty-one adults and one child dressed in "Sunday best" sitting and standing in two rows in front of a church sanctuary. Caption written on photograph reads "Ward #1 Mt. Zion Baptist Church 1932". Baptist Protestantism has been the predominant religion among African Americans from the Civil War until today however the Great Depression marked a particularly difficult time period for Baptist churches across the United States. In 1932 Protestant church attendance was at an all time low in part due to the church's inability to dispense charity to the needy and due to a general loss of faith in the face of financial hardship. African American Baptist Mt. Zion congregations are also known for their roles in the Civil Rights Movement. The churchgoers pictured were among a select few who remained steadfast practitioners of Baptist Protestantism during a difficult time in U.S. history. Very good condition. unknown books
