First Latin edition of this controversial work by Nektarios 1602/05-1676/85 the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem from 1661 to 1669 dedicated to Thomas Tenison the archbishop of Canterbury and King William III. Fabricius notes that Nektarios was born in Crete and educated at Athens under Theophilus Corydales. He was a strict partisan of Greek orthodoxy and endorsed the Confession of Mogilas in 1662. “During his patriarchate the Romish emissaries were very active in endeavoring to persuade the Greek Christians of Palestine… to unite with the Church of Rome; among them a Franciscan named Peter was especially active in distributing five tracts in defense of the papal authority. These tracts Nectarius answered by the publication of another entitled Peri tes arches tou Papa antirresis - On the Beginning of the Pope Antichrist which is a fair refutation of the five principles laid down in the Roman Catholic tracts” McClintock & Strong Cyclopedia 6:914. This refutation first appeared at Yassy in 1681 or 1682 and was later translated into the present Latin version by the eminent scholar and Huguenot refugee to England Pierre Allix 1641-1717. The conclusion of the text notes “Excusus per Metrophanem Hieromonachum Giazi Yassy in Moldavia A. MDCLXXII” -- the year of the Synod of Jerusalem which represented the climax of the Orthodox reaction against the heresies of Cyril Lucaris. Following the main text are two brief discussions of the Jesuits pp.385-406: De Jesuitis On the Jesuits; De Jesuita qui in Orientales nugas es mendacia effugiit On the Jesuits Who Spewed Falsehoods upon the Easterners. Dedication signed P. Allix. Provenance: Bookplate de-accession stamp Cathedral Library Ely where Allix’ son John Peter d. 1758 was dean. References: ESTC T115885. Graesse 4: 655. Fabricius Bibl. 1885ref. 141131885. Jerusalem Holy Land Jaffa Bonfils Félix Adrien. Jerusalem views c. 1880s document the circulation of commercially produced photographic imagery of the Holy Land within late nineteenth century European and American visual culture supporting research into Ottoman Palestine early mass tourism and the construction of sacred geography through photography. Produced by one of the first large-scale commercial photographers operating in the Middle East the images establish how Jerusalem was framed for external audiences through carefully composed views of religious monuments fortified architecture and active urban spaces. The photographs provide direct visual evidence of the city prior to twentieth century political transformation with particular emphasis on Christian pilgrimage sites Islamic architectural presence and everyday economic activity occurring alongside monumental structures. Three original albumen photographs each approximately 11 x 8.5 inches unmounted depicting distinct but related views of Jerusalem. One image captioned "255 Eglise Ste-Anne et vue generale de Jerusalem" presents St. Anne's Church within a wider panoramic view of the المدينة combining ecclesiastical architecture with dense urban settlement. A second photograph shows the fortress near the Jaffa Gate with a foreground market scene including carts animals and clustered goods documenting commercial exchange occurring directly adjacent to the city's defensive walls. The third image depicts the Golden Gate emphasizing masonry detail and the monumental scale of Jerusalem's eastern wall a site of longstanding religious significance in Jewish and Islamic traditions. Each photograph bears the characteristic compositional clarity and captioning style associated with Bonfils' studio production. Produced during the final decades of Ottoman administration these photographs align with the expansion of photographic tourism and the increased circulation of Holy Land imagery among European and American audiences seeking visual access to biblical and historical sites. Bonfils' work functioned within a broader commercial network supplying images to travelers scholars and institutions shaping how Jerusalem was documented interpreted and disseminated internationally. Light surface wear minor tonal variation and occasional creasing consistent with albumen prints of the period; overall very good condition. Together the group provides a cohesive visual record of Jerusalem's architectural religious and commercial landscape at a moment when photography played a central role in defining the city's global historical image. unknown

1920ref. List1734Jerusalem 1920. Silver gelatin photographs measuring 11 ½ x 9 ¼ inches hand colored. Some light normal wear near fine overall quite attractive and suitable for framing. Fine. The American Colony in Jerusalem started by 1881 by members of a Christian utopian society led by Anna and Horatio Spafford of Chicago developed in the next fifty years into one of the primary photographic historians of the city prior to Zionism. The Spaffords were joined by the Swedish American and Swedish-American Christians. They eventually moved into the former residence of Rabbah Effendi al-Husseini who served as an official during the Ottoman era. The building is the site of the current American Colony hotel. Collected here are seven hand-colored photographs taken and sold during their period of prolific output. They are particularly well preserved examples showing the group's skill for hand coloring. Little is known about the photographers themselves or their processes and the group's history continues to be delineated by curator Rachel Lev who has housed their archive in one of the colony's outbuildings. Original examples of the group's work are not terribly common on the market despite their important role in documenting the region during this period. unknown

1947ref. 383071947. JUDAICAÑZIONISM. Kriath Kodesh Call to Yeshiva Students. Jerusalem: Kislev 1947-48. Broadside measures 10 by 13-1/2 inches printed on recto. $1800.1947 Jerusalem Orthodox broadside against Òthe Zionists who wish to uproot the TorahÓ illustrative of the conflicts among Zionists and other factions in Jerusalem just prior to the creation of the state of Israel. This broadside states that it is the scholars of Torah who are the Neturei Karta Òthe protectors of the city.Ó ÒThe forces which were contending over the nature of the new society were divided into three broad groupsÉ Socialist Zionists known as the HistadrutÉ middle-class elements anti-Socialist RevisionistsÉ and the Orthodox who could not imagine a Jewish presence in the land which did not exemplify the values and practices of the religious traditionÓ Encyclopaedia Judaica. These three factions came to maturity as the Zionist settlement in Palestine increased tenfold from roughly 60000 in 1919 to 600000 in the 1940s. This broadside goes on to claim ÒWhomever has any relationship with the Zionists-even enlisting in the Haganah-becomes a partner in actions against Judaism.Ó ÒOrthodox elements were dedicated to the building of an institutional power base for religious Jews so that they could compete as equals with the other groups and provide equal opportunity in the new country for those who shared the Orthodox religious faith. This body of opinion was deeply concerned that the total temper of the Jewish community should not be secularized. They did not want to become a religious ghetto in a non-religious Jewish society and they believed that it was their duty to bring religion even to those who opposed itÉ The struggle between the Socialist and the middle-class elements in IsraelÕs society has been muted in the generation of statehood for a mixed economy now prevails. The conflict over religion and its relationship to public life has if anything become sharper within the sovereign parliamentary life of the Jewish stateÓ Encyclopaedia Judaica. Text in Hebrew.
