1920réf. List1734Jerusalem 1920. Silver gelatin photographs measuring 11 ½ x 9 ¼ inches hand colored. Some light normal wear near fine overall quite attractive and suitable for framing. Fine. The American Colony in Jerusalem started by 1881 by members of a Christian utopian society led by Anna and Horatio Spafford of Chicago developed in the next fifty years into one of the primary photographic historians of the city prior to Zionism. The Spaffords were joined by the Swedish American and Swedish-American Christians. They eventually moved into the former residence of Rabbah Effendi al-Husseini who served as an official during the Ottoman era. The building is the site of the current American Colony hotel. Collected here are seven hand-colored photographs taken and sold during their period of prolific output. They are particularly well preserved examples showing the group's skill for hand coloring. Little is known about the photographers themselves or their processes and the group's history continues to be delineated by curator Rachel Lev who has housed their archive in one of the colony's outbuildings. Original examples of the group's work are not terribly common on the market despite their important role in documenting the region during this period. unknown

1947réf. 383071947. JUDAICAZIONISM. Kriath Kodesh Call to Yeshiva Students. Jerusalem: Kislev 1947-48. Broadside measures 10 by 13-1/2 inches printed on recto. $1800.1947 Jerusalem Orthodox broadside against the Zionists who wish to uproot the Torah illustrative of the conflicts among Zionists and other factions in Jerusalem just prior to the creation of the state of Israel. This broadside states that it is the scholars of Torah who are the Neturei Karta the protectors of the city. The forces which were contending over the nature of the new society were divided into three broad groups Socialist Zionists known as the Histadrut middle-class elements anti-Socialist Revisionists and the Orthodox who could not imagine a Jewish presence in the land which did not exemplify the values and practices of the religious tradition Encyclopaedia Judaica. These three factions came to maturity as the Zionist settlement in Palestine increased tenfold from roughly 60000 in 1919 to 600000 in the 1940s. This broadside goes on to claim Whomever has any relationship with the Zionists-even enlisting in the Haganah-becomes a partner in actions against Judaism. Orthodox elements were dedicated to the building of an institutional power base for religious Jews so that they could compete as equals with the other groups and provide equal opportunity in the new country for those who shared the Orthodox religious faith. This body of opinion was deeply concerned that the total temper of the Jewish community should not be secularized. They did not want to become a religious ghetto in a non-religious Jewish society and they believed that it was their duty to bring religion even to those who opposed it The struggle between the Socialist and the middle-class elements in Israels society has been muted in the generation of statehood for a mixed economy now prevails. The conflict over religion and its relationship to public life has if anything become sharper within the sovereign parliamentary life of the Jewish state Encyclopaedia Judaica. Text in Hebrew. Faint fold lines. Fine condition. Scarce. unknown

This marvelous souvenir photo album composed of Ottoman-era albumen images captured not only recreated iconic religious scenes but also captured Jerusalemites in city streets and the Holy Land in the opening decades of the 20th Century. The album opens with the image of the “Street Scene inside Jaffa Gate” which captures Frederick Vester & Co.’s American Colony shop and photography studio in the right fore-ground of the image with bustling street and clock tower prominent in the center of the image. The American Colony produced created developed printed hand-coloured and sold thematic photographs stereoviews panoramic photos postcards custom hand-coloured glass lantern slides along with deluxe thematic souvenir albums such as this one. The series included here which incorporates a view of the room for the Last Supper and a nicely composed image of a beautifully terraced Garden of Gethsemane follows with the Stations of the Cross. The often incorporate residents in their daily lives watering donkeys pilgrims praying at Stations merchants and those wandering through the gates and winding streets of the ancient city. The photographers have captured the baroque & ornate Station Calvary the Church of the Holy Sepulchre a view of the Dome of the Rock and a teeming scene of women men and families seated and standing praying at the Wailing Wall. The American Colony emerged from the evangelical “End Times” beliefs inculcated by Horatio Spafford and Anna Larssen Spafford in 19th-Century Chicago who despite their profitable lectures the support & encouragement of Dwight Moody and at best questionable financial chicanery shipped out for the Holy Land in 1881 ahead of their creditors for $ 100000. Eventually the largely “celibate” commune controlled by “Messages from God” to Anna Spafford and through lectures and charity merged with Olof Larson’s “Doomsday” Larsonite believers along with Frederick Vester and a number of photographers began operating the American Colony store near the Jaffa gate and vastly expanding their tourist photographic operations. By 1910 they had several employees and the noted American Colony photographers such as Elijah Meyers and Lewis Larsson extended their talents across Palestine capturing not only the River Jordan but life in Bethlehem Bethany Syria Damascus and many other locations across the Ottoman Empire controlled areas. Although the American Colony projected a harmonious community bound together by simple Christian piety the sect was tightly controlled by Anna who not only restricted and monitored all correspondence by Colony members ordered shunning of those who ignored her dictates and maintained direct control over their finances. She also enforced marital celibacy until she “received a Message” that her daughter Bertha and Frederick Vester could marry in 1904. Along with his ecclesiastical duties Anthimos was also a scholar known particularly for his facility with languages. “Anthimos became well known as a fervent defender of Orthodoxy against Catholic proselytism which at that time was very active in Palestine. It was then that he composed first in Greek and then in Arabic his ‘Theological Treatise’ and ‘Interpretation of the Psalms.’ Having had them published in Vienna in 1791 – 92 he distributed thousands of copies of these works among the Arab Christians of the region. At the same time he enjoyed friendly relations with Sultan Selim III 1789-1807 who supported him in consolidating Orthodox rights in the Holy Land.“ Today this important Arabic book on Orthodox Christianity is very rarely seen. TEXT: This manuscript is a vivid witness to the importance of St. Jerome in fifteenth-century Italy and includes the foundational texts for his cult: three letters regarding his death miracles and titles to glory and veneration and purporting to be written by three contemporaries of St. Jerome c. 347-420 namely St. Eusebius of Cremona d. 423 St. Augustine of Hippo 354-430 and Bishop Cyril of Jerusalem c. 313-386 but probably written in Rome at the end of the thirteenth or beginning of the fourteenth century; a life of St. Jerome by an unknown author probably writing in Italy in the twelth century; and Jeromes own life of St. Paul the Hermit written in 374 or 375. These texts were widely disseminated in both Latin and in vernacular translations and they influenced the work of numerous writers and visual artists. ILLUSTRATION: The iconographical choice in the historiated initial f. 1 to depict the ascetic Jerome contemplating the Crucifixion dates from c. 1400 in Italy and can be particularly associated with Hieronymite congregations in Tuscany. PROVENANCE: Copied in Northern Italy in the middle years of the fifteenth century as suggested by the evidence of the script and decoration; the penwork initials in particular seem to point to Northern Italy. The manuscript almost certainly once included the coat of arms of its original owner in the lower margin of the illuminated border on f. 1. Three sets of initials are inscribed in three different hands all possibly initials of owners: within the roundel on f. 1 a modern owner inscribed an outline of a shield in pen and the initials F.A.; inside front cover white embossed seal with the initials L.F.; on front cover as part of the added decoration F. C. CONDITION: Slight loss of the leather at the back top of the spine and over the lower band of the binding; top of the painted border on f. 1 is very slightly trimmed; f. 1 is darkened; and there is some soiling throughout but overall in very good condition.
