Published about 50 years after the sect arrived in New York this work is an effort to set the record straight about the Shakers. In the preface the authors suggest the considerable interest in the Shakers along with the sometimes prejudiced view of these people which even included charges of drunkenness of Ann Lee and her associates was the reason for writing this book. According to them they didn't want to inspire controversy but merely to present the facts as they saw them which includes a history of this group. Sabin 79721. Packard & Van Benthuysen,

réf. 4879CALVIN COOLIDGE 1872-1933. Coolidge was the Thirtieth President.TLS. 1pg. February 18 1925. The White House Washington. A typed letter signed Calvin Coolidge as President on The White House letterhead. Coolidge wrote to Mrs. John D. Sherman President of the General Federation of Womens Clubs turning down an honorary position: Your letter of the 13th instant affords me an opportunity of which I am glad to avail myself to express once more my convictions as to the usefulness and fine idealism which are embodied in the program of the American Institute of Operatic and Allied Arts. Convinced that it represents a thoroughly unselfish contribution in the important field of national culture I have been glad to note the strong support which has been given to it by the General Federation of Womens Clubs. In view of these sentiments and of your earnest invitation on behalf of the General Federation I regret that I cannot accept the post of Honorary President of the National Advisory Council. I am compelled of course by the demands of other duties upon my time to restrict my privilege of outside service; but I am glad to give this testimony of interest and encouragement to so worthy a movement. The letter is in very good condition with a rust stain from a paperclip light soiling and it is mounted to a larger sheet. Coolidges signature is a bit choppy due to an evident pen failure. unknown

1860réf. 12904New York: A.S. Barnes & Burr 1860. Octavo 8 x 5.5" original brown cloth with brown morocco spine gilt spine titles 2 6 3-251 pp. A school textbook for North Carolina students one of a series of three authored by Calvin H. Wiley a pioneering North Carolina educator. Wiley was the first superintendent of North Carolina Common Schools working to reorganize and expand the school such that literacy increased and North Carolina became an education leader among Southern states. The book was first published in 1851; this is the third revised edition. The reader contains descriptions of the various cities and regions of the state statistical information and a series of North Carolina themed essays and poems including "importance of female society in improvement of mind and formation of character" and "advantages of state pride". The text prints statistics regarding enslaved persons in the state and stresses that that state should be welcoming to farmers of all stripes including slaveowners. Another section covers a planned July 1775 slave rebellion emphasizing the violent intentions of the would-be participants and criticizing their British supporters: "they had been directed to fall on the night of the 8th on the white family in which they resided; and after destroying it to set fire to the buildings and proceed thus from plantation to plantation. This plan agrees with that suggested by the celebrated Samuel Johnson a distinguished English critic but a hateful bigot and uniform defender of tyranny." Seven in OCLC for this 1860 edition. A good copy with toning and foxing occasional damp staining to pages wear to covers with chip to lower spine leather. A.S. Barnes & Burr hardcover
