1969réf. 1736New York: Oxford University Press 1969. First edition. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY OF MELVIN CALVIN'S REVIEW OF THE ORIGIN OF LIFE BASED ON HIS NOBEL-WINNING DISCOVERY OF THE PHOTOSYNTHETIC PATHWAY. 9 inches tall softcover color printed covers errata slip laid in inscribed and signed on title page "For David Perlman/ David Calvin" i-ix 278 pp many illustrations. Light wear to covers text unmarked very good minus. MELVIN ELLIS CALVIN 1911 - 1997 was an American chemist most famed for discovering the Calvin cycle along with Andrew Benson and James Bassham for which he was awarded the 1961 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He spent most of his five-decade career at the University of California Berkeley. Using the carbon-14 isotope as a tracer Calvin Benson and Bassham mapped the complete route that carbon travels through a plant during photosynthesis. "Surprisingly in 2013 it came to light that some 20 vials of moon dust that had been returned to Earth after historic landings of Apollo 11 and 12 were found in storage by Berkeley Lab archivist Karen Nelson. These rarest extraterrestrial samples were the source of Calvin's studies of carbon compounds in moon rocks and lunar soil! Such is the importance of carbon fixation that the very existence of any of the compounds that result from photosynthetic carbon reduction are the signs of life as we know it."-- Govindjee G. Nonomura A. & Lichtenthaler H.K. Remembering Melvin Calvin a highly versatile scientist of the 20th century. Photosynth Res 143 1–11 2020. REVIEW OF THE BOOK BY STANLEY MILLER IN SCIENCE 1970: "It is generally believed that life began on the earth sometime between 4.5 and 3.5 billion years ago. The first step in this process was the synthesis of simple organic compounds from the constituents of the reducing atmosphere. This was followed by the polymerization of these simple compounds and finally by the organization of the polymers into a self-replicating structure. This sequence of events is sometimes called chemical evolution although it is not evolution in the Darwinian sense inasmuch as reproduction mutation and selection are not involved before the first living organism artist. There has been considerable experimental investigation in this area the last 20 years and the author of this book has made substantial contributions to the field. This book summarizes his view of the subject. The final sections deal with the possibility that life is present on other planets in the universe. Twenty years ago this was considered a relatively wild idea. Life on some other planet is now considered quite plausible and discussion is centered on what fraction of the stars in the universe have planets with life on them and on how to detect radio signals from those planets that have civilizations at a later stage of development than our own. This book written for readers interested in a broad and not too detailed view is a good introduction to the field." STANLEY LLOYD MILLER 1930 – 2007 was an American chemist who made important experiments concerning the origin of life by demonstrating that a wide range of vital organic compounds can be synthesized by fairly simple chemical processes from inorganic substances. In 1952 he performed the Miller–Urey experiment Science Vol. 117 pp 528-530 1953 which showed that complex organic molecules could be synthesized from inorganic precursors. The experiment was widely reported and provided evidence for the idea that the chemical evolution of the early Earth had caused the natural synthesis of organic compounds from inanimate inorganic molecules. PROVENANCE: DAVID PERLMAN 1920-1980 earned his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin in 1945. In 1967 after some 23 years in the fermentation phase of the pharmaceutical industry Dr. Perlman moved to the University of Wisconsin-Madison first as Knapp visiting professor then as Professor of Pharmaceutical Biochemistry in the School of Pharmacy. The opportunities at the School of Pharmacy included the possibility of enlarging his research activities and teaching both undergraduate and graduate students. From 1968 until June 1975 he served as Dean of the School while carrying out his teaching responsibilities and supervising an active research program. Oxford University Press paperback

1929réf. 80113New York: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation c1929. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Ephemera. Good. Single sheet approximately 11 inches by 7 inches tri-folded Text on 5 of the six panels. Rare post-Presidential ephemera. Calvin Coolidge born John Calvin Coolidge Jr.; July 4 1872 - January 5 1933 was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 30th president of the United States from 1923 to 1929. A Republican lawyer from New England born in Vermont Coolidge worked his way up the ladder of Massachusetts state politics eventually becoming governor of Massachusetts. His response to the Boston Police Strike of 1919 thrust him into the national spotlight and gave him a reputation as a man of decisive action. The next year he was elected vice president of the United States and he succeeded to the presidency upon the sudden death of Warren G. Harding in 1923. Elected in his own right in 1924 he gained a reputation as a small government conservative and also as a man who said very little and had a rather dry sense of humor. Coolidge restored public confidence in the White House after the scandals of his predecessor's administration and left office with considerable popularity. As a Coolidge biographer wrote: "He embodied the spirit and hopes of the middle class could interpret their longings and express their opinions. That he did represent the genius of the average is the most convincing proof of his strength". He is praised by advocates of smaller government and laissez-faire economics while supporters of an active central government generally view him less favorably although most praise his stalwart support of racial equality. Allan Louis Benson November 6 1871 - August 19 1940 was an American newspaper editor and author who ran as the Socialist Party of America candidate for President of the United States in 1916. he 1916 campaign was run by Benson and the Socialist Party primarily through the newspapers with Benson concentrating his fire on the country's "Preparedness" campaign. The campaign proved manifestly unsuccessful with Benson capturing only half of the nearly 1 million votes cast for Gene Debs in the 1912 campaign. Benson and his running mate George R. Kirkpatrick ultimately received 590524 votes for just 3.2% of the total vote. Daniel Webster January 18 1782 October 24 1852 was an American statesman who twice served in the United States House of Representatives served as a U. S. Senator from Massachusetts 1827 1841 and 1845 1850 and was twice the United States Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison and John Tyler 1841 1843 and Millard Fillmore 1850 1852 . Along with James G. Blaine he is one of only two people who have served as Secretary of State under three presidents. He also sought the Whig Party nomination for President three times: in 1836 1840 and 1852. Benson wrote "I have tried in this book by blending the incomplete pictures of Webster's friends to present a complete portrait not merely of Webster the statesman but of Webster the man with all his delightful drolleries and not without some attention to his weaknesses. Also I have tried to show that the historians of his day never gave him his due. He seems to be to have been the only American statesman of his day who advocated a course that if followed would eventually have done away with chattel slavery without a civil war. " This is a remarkable item--a former President commenting on a biography of an American Statesman written by a former Presidential candidate. It is particularly relevant for President Coolidge to review a biography of Daniel Webster since they shared such strong New England roots. President Coolidge summed up his review of Benson's biography of Daniel Webster by stating "His life and works deserve fare more study than they receive. Mr. Benson has brought into his book much material that I have not seen before in print. He has effectively answered many criticisms correctly represented Mr. Webster as a great intellect an able lawyer a wise statesman and left him also as a human being entitled to our admiration our sympathy and our love." This is a generally overlooked or forgotten item in the Oeuvre of President Calvin Coolidge which provides significant insight into how he reflected both on the work of the biographer and on the subject of the biography.
