HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - RELIGIOUS REFORM AND ITS CONTRADICTIONS A WOMAN BISHOP AND THE HOLINESS MOVEMENT. Alma Bridwell White founded the Pillar of Fire movement after breaking with mainstream Methodism. Her religious teachings emphasized personal holiness strict moral conduct and disciplined living. Vegetarianism formed part of this approach linking bodily health with spiritual responsibility. A COMPLICATED LEGACY. White's advocacy of women's religious leadership and dietary reform stands in sharp contrast to her later public support for the Ku Klux Klan and its discriminatory ideology.
