ABOUT THE ARTIST José Clemente Orozco November 23 1883 - September 7 1949 was a Mexican caricaturist and painter who specialized in political murals that established the Mexican Mural Renaissance together with murals by Diego Rivera David Alfaro Siqueiros and others. Orozco was the most complex of the Mexican muralists fond of the theme of human suffering but less realistic and more fascinated by machines than Rivera. Mostly influenced by Symbolism he was also a genre painter and lithographer. Between 1922 and 1948 Orozco painted murals in Mexico City; Orizaba; Claremont California; New York City; Hanover New Hampshire; Guadalajara Jalisco; and Jiquilpan Michoacán. With Diego Rivera he was a leader of the artist movement known as Mexican Muralism. An important distinction he had from Rivera was his darker view of the Mexican Revolution. While Rivera was a bold optimistic figure touting the glory of the revolution Orozco was less comfortable with the bloody toll the social movement was taking. Orozco is known as one of the Big Three muralists along with Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. All three artists as well as the painter Rufino Tamayo experimented with fresco on large walls and elevated the art of the mural. Delphic Studios unknown

1941réf. 12612JNew York: Julian Messner 1941. First Edition. Inscribed and signed by actor John Barrymore to fellow actor Hans Conried presented to him five months before Barrymore’s passing: “To Hans Conried - with sincerest good wishes to a fine artist John Barrymore 9 iv ‘41.” This was John Barrymore’s own copy with his large engraved bookplate which is a striking design by Barrymore himself with his initials at the bottom showing the masks of comedy and tragedy entwined in a thorny tree with flowing banners reading: “John Barrymore - Ex Libris” beneath which is a pen and an artist’s brush. Beneath this is Conried’s own bookplate printed in crimson and a caricature vignette of Conried. Hans Conried is best remembered for his leading role in the classic Dr. Seuss fantasy film The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T as well as his portrayal of Uncle Tonoose on The Danny Thomas Show. This book is a 282 page biography of Barrymore and is very rare inscribed by him since it appeared just shortly before his death. Laid in is a special yellow printed card for the John Barrymore estate auction which “Entitles the Bearer to Seat in RESERVED SECTION at Auction of the Precious Possessions of John Barrymore - Deceased - Outstanding Star of Stage and Screen Monday and Tuesday August 24 and 25 1943 3123 West Eighth Street Los Angeles - J.J. Sugarman - Randolph Co. Auctioneers.” Some interesting notes on Barrymore written by Conried on the rear endpapers very good in a very good lightly chipped dust jacket. Julian Messner unknown
