1886Best.-Nr. 50292Tokyo: Tokiwaya 1886. Very good. Scarce and exceptional first edition thus a light-hearted illustrated adaptation of the Creation and story of Adam and Eve from the Book of Genesis into Japanese. The story of Bible editions in Japan reflects the country's fraught history with Christianity; after the religion was banned in the early 17th century the portions printed by Catholic missionaries were lost. The ban on Christianity lifted only in the Meiji era first partially in 1873 then enshrined in the Constitution 1889 by means of an article on the freedom of religion. The post-Meiji Restoration translation effort of the Hebrew Bible began in 1882 and was finally completed in 1887. Books were completed and issued in parts with Genesis first issued in 1883. This heavily illustrated and lighthearted version of the two most famous stories from Genesis adapts the text to a well-established literary genre of Meiji Japan: KusazÅshi a forerunner of manga popular illustrated works in which the text weaves around the illustrations that dominate most spreads. Because they were meant for a popular audience the text is often primarily in hiragana or kanji with furigana; here the text is shown in three writing styles: kanji hiragana and romaji with furigana glosses. This presentation suggests how Christian mythology must have appeared to Japanese readers much as say Greek mythology seems to modern American readers of Homer. God is depicted as a mustachioed wise man while the serpent approaches Eve on legs. Most charmingly one spread depicts God spying on Adam and Eve with a pair of binoculars. While listed as the "first part" it is all published with no second volume ever appearing. We find only two copies at the National Diet Library and at Waseda University. 7.75'' x 5.25''. Original printed wrappers. Woodblock printed and illustrated including 16 double-page spreads. Title page matching illustrated cover printed on red metallic-speckled paper. 39 1 pages. Some staining and wear to wrappers with 2.5'' paper repair to rear wrapper verso. Black ink calligraphy to versos of both wrappers. Housed in custom blue cloth chemise. [Tokiwaya] unknown books

Commonly known as the "Great She Bible" for the more correct reading "she went into the citie" in Ruth III. 15 and also for the remarkable error in Matthew XXVI. 36 leaf where "Judas" appears for "Jesus." Sometimes a correction slip is pasted over the mistake but in the present copy it is corrected in an early hand. "The King James Bible or the Authorized Version as it is now commonly but not strictly accurately known was the outcome of the conference summoned at Hampton Court by the King in January 1604 in an attempt to settle the quarrels in the Church of England arising from the Puritan zeal of some of its members. It was the leader of the Puritan party John Reynolds the President of Corpus Christi College Oxford who first suggested the idea of a new translation. It has been described as 'the only literary masterpiece ever to have been produced by a committee' and was the work of nearly fifty translators organized in six groups.Being based on a wider range of classical and oriental scholarship than its predecessors the Authorized Version was a more learned text.No new English translation was produced until the Revised Version of 1881 and the influence of the Authorized Version may best be described in the words of G.M. Trevelyan. 'For every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Glove there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. The effect of the continual domestic study of the book upon the national character imagination and intelligence for nearly three centuries to come was greater than that of any literary movement in our annals or any religious movement since the coming of St Augustine'" Printing and the Mind of Man 114 describing the 1611 first edition. "The translators were directed to take the rendering of the Bishops' Bible as their basis and were advised also to consult the following versions: Tyndale's Matthew's Coverdale's Whitchurch's i.e. the Great Bible and the Geneva" Herbert 309 describing the 1611 first edition. Carefully translated according to the Masoretic Text on the Basis of the English Version after the best Jewish Authorities; and supplied with short Explanatory Notes. By Isaac Leeser. Hebrew "For it shall not be forgotten out of the mouth of his seed." Dent. xxxi 21. Philadelphia: Isaac Leeser 1853. First edition of the first complete translation of the Old Testament by a Jewish translator into English building upon Leeser's 1845 translation of the five books of the Pentateuch translation in 1845-1846. Folio 10 3/8 x 8 3/8 inches; 275 x 212 mm. Original full brown morocco. Boards ruled and elaborately stamped in gilt. Spine stamped and lettered in gilt. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Binding with some restoration along joints and edges. A bit of foxing mainly to the preliminaries. Some occasional light dampstaining. Overall a very good copy. "Having published a five-volume Pentateuch-cum-haftarot lections from the Prophets translation in 1845-1846 as well as a complete vocalized and accentuated Hebrew Bible in 1848 the first such edition published in the U.S. he proceeded from April 1852 to September 1853 to extend his translation efforts to the entire Hebrew Bible. The result was his Twenty-Four Books of the Holy Scriptures the first translation of all of Tanakh into English by a Jew complete with short explanatory notes. Leeser explained in the preface to his magnum opus that he undertook the project in order to provide Anglophone Jewry with a vernacular version of the Bible "which has not been made by the authority of churches in which they can have no confidence" pp. iii-iv. The book achieved wide popularity among English-speaking Jews and even some Gentiles especially in America and went through multiple editions." Sotheby's "The translation of the Bible was Leeser's great literary achievement and represented many years of patient labor and devotion to a task which he considered sacred. Leeser was not fully equipped for this work for he was no specialist in Hebrew philology nor a master if Jewish learning in general and he was quite conscious of his shortcomings but he was inspired. He says in his preface: 'I thought in all due humility that I might safely go to task confidently relying upon that superior aid which is never withheld from the inquirer after truth.' He made good use of the various German translations by Jews of the collective commentary known as the Biur vol. III sec. 81 and of other Jewish exegetic works. As a result his translation though based in style upon the King James version can be considered an independent work for the changes he produced are numerous and great. His prime concern was to supply the traditional interpretation when necessary and the retention of the Jewish spirit at times even at the expense of beauty of style. The translation went through numerous editions and until the new Jewish Publication Society version was issued in 1917 it was the only source from which many Jews not conversant with Hebrew derived their knowledge of the Bible in accordance with Jewish tradition" Waxman History of Jewish Literature 1090. This edition "has always been regarded as Baskerville's magnum opus and is his most magnificent as well as his most characteristic specimen" T.B. Reed A History of the Old English Letter Foundries p. 279. Gaskell declared that the title-page to the New Testament is "a perfect page of fine printing." Although the Baskerville Bible is now recognized as one of the greatest Bibles of all time it was initially a financial failure. Costing £2000 to print the remaining stock about half of the edition was remaindered five years after publication to a London bookseller. It was Baskerville's last great book. "Aesthetically the highest point in English Bible printing so far was John Baskerville's folio printed at Cambridge in 1763. To achieve his ambition to print a folio Bible Baskerville had to become University Printer on not very advantageous terms. The Bible uses his types paper and ink and shows his characteristic 'machine-made' finish: very smooth and even in colour and impression with glossy black ink on smooth paper. The design is traditional but the quality of material and workmanship is so high and the conventions are so delicately modified and consistently applied that the result is extremely impressive" The Cambridge History of the Bible: The West from the Reformation to the Present Day p. 464. It was richly illustrated by James Fittler 1758-1835 an esteemed British engraver of portraits and landscapes who served as marine engraver to King George III. He produced illustrations for the Boydell Shakespeare and Dibdin's Aedes Althorpinae. In this edition Fittler based his engravings on Old Master paintings befitting the gravity of the text. The Expulsion from Paradise suggests Holbein's version; the New Testament shows some dependence on the set owned by Sébastien Gryphius. the Apocalypse blocks are enlarged copies of the fine Janot Apocalypse. But the cumulative effect of Salomon's carefully detailed scenes is that of an individual contribution to Bible illustration. Particularly interesting from the point of view of technique are the night scenes in Exodus and the storm over Noah's ark. In this 1554 Bible the New Testament blocks are printed with arabesque strip borders at the sides. Arabesque and type ornament headpieces." Mortimer Contents include: Old Testament; Psalms; New Testament Epistles Acts; Index Testimoniorum & Index Epistolarum. Robert I Estienne 1503-1559 was a French protestant printer and scholar born into a printmaking family. He would take over his family's Paris firm in 1526 where he printed significant works in Latin Greek Hebrew and other languages. His 1531 Thesaurus linguae latinae is considered a major milestone in lexicography. Despite his many commissions for the King religious tensions forced Estienne to flee to Geneva. This bible was illustrated by Bernard Salomon c.1508-1561 a French artist who is known for engravings and illustrations. Although little is known about his life his art reveals stylistic influences from Mannerism and the School of Fontainebleau executed in a detailed and small scale. Salomon is known to have collaborated with the printer Jean de Tournes and produced decoration for emblem books bibles and classic texts. Many of his engravings also appear as source material for art objects such as a Faience plate at the MET featuring the Sacrifice of Noah. INNOVATIVE AND HIGHLY UNUSUAL SCOTTISH CHIPPENDALE ROCOCO BINDINGS COMBINING CHINOISERIE AND NEOCLASSICAL ELEMENTS EXHIBITING THE INDEPENDENCE OF SCOTTISH WORK AT THIS TIME. The present example is a striking hybrid of late 18th-century decorative art in Britain the likes of which we have not encountered hitherto. Here "oriental" birds and peacocks are juxtaposed with patriotic depictions of Britannia uncharacteristically surmounted by a fleur-de-lis bold anchors columns sunbursts dripping garlands flowers sheaves of wheat and urns. Presented in the Chippendale style the present binder who is as yet unnamed introduces rococo ornaments while enclosing all of the above with an unmistakably neoclassical greek-key roll. EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY ROCOCO BINDINGS OF THIS QUALITY ARE RARE PARTICULARLY THOSE EXECUTED IN SCOTLAND. Rococo book arts in Scotland have been almost completely unexplored on account of the paltry number of examples with which we are able to study. Robert Adam's designs for the bindings of his "Ruins of Spalatro" 1764 is a bold statement of the neoclassical for he was justly celebrated. But we now know that Adam was not exclusively "Grecian." David Pullins' heroic archival research in Sir John Soane's Museum has shown that Adam received three previously unexamined commissions for a seemingly antithetical kind of decoration which he calls "neoclassical chinoiserie" specifically Adam's drawings for an unrealized chinoiserie looking-glass dated 1769 for Edwin Lascelles 1st Earl of Harewood. SOURCE: "Robert Adam's Neoclassical Chinoiserie" in: West 86th: A Journal of Decorative Arts Design History and Material Culture online. We would argue that the present bindings exhibit such a blend of Chippendale chinoiserie rococo and neoclassical. For a general note on English "Chippendale" and "Chinoiserie" bindings see G.D. Hobson "English Bindings of J.R. Abbey" p. 126. ¶ Our bindings may be linked to four others -- all greatly inferior -- which share the large "eagle" tool in common as noted by Mirjam Foot: 1. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST TRANSLATION OF THE NEW TESTAMENT FROM THE GREEK INTO MODERN PERSIAN: THE ROBERT BRUCE TRANSLATION "THE VERSION BY WHICH ALL LATER RENDITIONS ARE JUDGED." Published by the British and Foreign Bible Society the text builds upon the 1845/6 translation of the New Testament by Mirza Sayyed Ali Khan / Henry Martyn which was published with the Old Testament in a single volume likewise by the British and Foreign Bible Society. This was the first complete Christian Bible to be published in Persian. However: "After some years it was recognized that changes in the Persian language required a revision of the 1845 Bible. With the help of others Robert Bruce a missionary and representative of the British and Foreign Bible Society in Iran spent 20 years on this project. The revised New Testament was published in 1882 and further revisions of the whole Bible was published by the British and Foreign Bible Society in Leipzig in 1895. The so-called 'Bruce translation' is still the standard Bible translation in Persian and it is the version by which all later renditions are judged." Encyclopedia Iranica Persian Translations of the Bible online. As stated Bruce's translation of the New Testament first appeared in 1882 but it was deemed necessary to revise it further. Portions of Bruce's translation into modern Persian appeared in 1893 Pentateuch and 1894 Joshua to II Chronicles. Finally in 1895 Bruce's further revised translation of the New Testament the present edition was issued appearing independently from a one-volume edition of the complete Bible. Darlow and Moule 7358 state: "The Old Testament practically represents a new translation and the New Testament is a fresh revision." Robert Bruce 1833-1915 was an Irish born CMS Missionary active in Persia from 1869-1893. He was a Lecturer in Persian at University College London 1895-6 vicar at Durham 1896 and Rector of Little Dean Gloucester 1903. His Bible translation work was carried out with assistance of others including for example Karapet Ohaness from Julfa Persia. A cornerstone for any collection of American children's books American illustration or American Bibles this classic children's book is an American reprinting of the edition first published by Hodgson in London in 1783. Containing nearly 500 illustrations it is the first Bible printed in the United States specifically for children. The rebus format of the small volume presents the young reader with famous Bible stories in an amusing format that encourages reading puzzle solving and Bible study. "A touchstone of eighteenth-century American book illustration this 'curious' children's Bible contains nearly five hundred woodcuts made by American artists. The most ambitious woodcut book produced in America up to that time it is one of the sixty-five children's book titles produced by the pioneer publisher of children's literature and preeminent early American printer Isaiah Thomas 1749-1831 who had learned the art of engraving while apprenticed in his youth to the Boston printer Zechariah Fowle" American Treasures of the Library of Congress online exhibition. Complete copies of the first hieroglyphic and children's Bible printed in America are very rare with even Brinley's copy lacking a leaf. This is a book that saw extremely heavy use and given its young audience inevitable if often loving misuse.
