réf. ST21189Seattle and London: University of Washington Press 2002. FIRST EDITION. 220 x 280 mm. 8 3/4 x 11". 222 pp. 1 leaf. LOVELY OCHER GOATSKIN BY JOHN FRANKLIN MOWERY stamp-signed "JFM 2002" on rear turn-in covers with blind-ruled frame surrounding seven columns of increasing height filled with a dense geometric pattern featuring small inlays highlighted in red and green smooth spine ruled and titled in blind. In a black slipcase with matching goatskin lip. Numerous color photographic plates in the text throughout. Bookplate of Werner L. Gundersheimer on front pastedown see below. A VERY FINE COPY--virtually unworn and internally pristine. This beautifully produced celebration of the Folger Shakespeare Library comes from the personal collection of its Emeritus Director and is offered in a fine binding executed by its former Head Conservator. Our binder J. Franklin Mowery studied bookbinding under Professor Kurt Londenberg at the Staatliche Hochschule für bildende Künste Academy of Art in Hamburg and trained as a paper conservator under Otto Wächter in Vienna before returning to the U.S where he served as the head of conservation at the Folger for 37 years. At the same time he continuing to take private binding commissions for which he was highly acclaimed even having a solo show of his work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1982. Produced on the 70th anniversary of the Folger Shakespeare Library "Infinite Variety" aims as the introduction says to fill the "long-felt need" for a "comprehensive survey of the library's collections and activities for the general public" with contributions from many of the library's staff members including Mowery. The binding demonstrates Mowery's skill the buttery goatskin tooled with precision to a design that is elegantly designed complex and yet slightly whimsical not unlike the works of Shakespeare. According to Mowery's article "A Binder's Training" "Guild of Book Workers' Journal" XX 1981-82 the blind-stamping technique seen here was "particularly favored by Professor Londenberg" and often employed by Mowery for the range of design possibilities it offers. The method uses dies to stamp the patterns: "a photographic process can transfer any black and white image onto zinc plates that are deeply etched and mounted onto type-high metal blocks for heated impressions or onto wood for cold embossing." Former owner Werner L. Gundersheimer b. 1937 served as the director of the Folger from 1984-2002 and has served as Director Emeritus since 2004. His tenure was marked by growth in the library's collections as well as increased academic fellowships and public outreach. University of Washington Press unknown books

DARK BACK OF TIME is Javier Marías' response to the reception of his 1992 novel ALL SOULS. ALL SOULS is arguably semi-autobiographical: it follows a professor of translation working a stint at Oxford who finds himself surrounded by lost souls in academia much like Marías once did in real life. The souls the novel was inspired by--professors bookshop owners and others of that academic ilk--recognized themselves and ardently maintain that Marías' work was roman á clef. DARK BACK OF TIME begins by exploring the bizarre effect of Marías' experience publishing ALL SOULS and thus he's deemed the former a "false novel" intertwining autobiography and fiction to tell a non-linear and mysterious tale evocative of his masterful Argentine forefather Jorge Luis Borges. Javier Marías 1951-2022 remains a star in the canon of contemporary Spanish literature whose complex philosophical narratives continue to influence the fiction and mystery genres while provoking questions about the thin and often blurred line between fiction and reality. 1401892. 1910réf. 21516San Francisco presumed 1910. Fine. A striking dimply composed full body watercolor portrait of a young Chinese American by Esther Hunt an artist who specialized in Oriental subjects and above all else the denizens of San Francisco's Chinatown. The young woman is in traditional dress with a colorful parasol above her head positioned like a halo. The parasol is the only prop and it provides a sweet contrast to the "debutant". The painting is indeed titled "The Debutante". We think the title was intended a little tongue-in-cheek as the subject looks to us as if she is pre-adolescent. That said the title should not be deemed in any way snarky or sarcastic; an artist might have entitled a painting of such a young person of any background standing in this manner similarly. And here one could interpret the girl's inscrutable expression and stillness as suggestive of a maturity beyond her years. The visible portrait or frame window is 20 by 17 cm. The frame itself 33.5 by 30 cm. The frame is quite thick -- not quite 6 cm. We don't know when the painting was done but probably early 20th Century. We arbitrarily have dated it 1910. Hunt took an unconventional approach to marketing her paintings. She often sold through Gumps a well-known San Francisco-based jewelry and housewares store still in business today. One should not think she was lesser as an artist as a result of that. She certainly had the best art education conceivable. She studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute and the New York Art Students League and at the latter under William Merritt Chase. unknown books
1906réf. 21246San Francisco presumed 1906. A charming painting by Esther Hunt an artist who specialized in Oriental subjects and above all else the denizens of San Francisco's Chinatown. And not to be shortchanged is the Orientalist frame obviously custom-made for this particular painting and is itself a pleasurable decorative object in and of itself but also working with the painting and as a good frame should do catching the eye and directing it to the painting. The painting here is a quintessential Hunt portrait and its custom frame is of a type one finds with other Hunt paintings -- we don't know whether she also designed the frame but we suspect she indeed did that as well. We date the painting to a penciled note on the back which indicates that the painting was purchased at Gumps on April 16th 1906. Gumps is a well-known San Francisco-based jewelry and housewares store still in business today. This reinforces our sense that Hunt was a painter who sold her paintings in a wide variety of venues outside of tony art galleries. That said she studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute and the New York Art Students League and at the latter under William Merritt Chase. The painting on canvas visible portion is 65 by 40 cm. The frame was done by a highly skilled artisan. Unfortunately we do not know who created it nor whether Esther Hunt had a hand in its design. All we can tell is that it was created for this painting and it is contemporary with the painting or put another way it is probably the only frame that ever housed this painting. The frame at its tallest including the wooden rings on top is 82 cm tall and except for the top roof shaped piece the frame is 54 cm wide. unknown books
