1982réf. 00426scAtona Manitoba Canada: D.W. Friesen & Sons Ltd. 1982. First Edition. Octavo blue cloth hardcover gilt letters xi 373 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. Includes bibliographic documentation numerous tables maps and illustrations. “This book tells the story of Altona settled by a small group of pioneers on an original settlement on the prairies in the 1870s. The old Altona Village which was settled in the 1880s graduallly evolved into a modern town. It is an absorbing story well told. The author has researched her book thoroughly from original as well as secondary sources and supplemented this with oral interviews. The book is well illustrated and is complete with index bibliography glossary tables and figures. It is more than a chronological story. Against the background of history the author has also sketched the struggle of the Mennonite pioneers to maintain their identity and at the same time adapt to the current and changing conditions of society around them. And in it we also learn what it is to be Canadian and at the same time to be part of a minority group.” D.W. Friesen & Sons Ltd., 1982. First Edition. hardcover books

1949réf. 37958London: Frederick Warne and Co 1949. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. Mabel Esther Allan 1915 -1998 was a prolific British author of about 170 children's books. She decided to be an author at the age of eight; her father bought her a writing desk and taught her how to type. When the family moved Allan was given a study in which to write. Her eyesight was poor which her parents 'took.very badly and wrongly' It was such a taboo subject that she never discussed it with anyone until she was almost thirty when it spontaneously improved. Her eyesight was the reason she disliked school. She published a few short stories in the 1930s and had longer submissions accepted but her activities were interrupted by the Second World War. Allan served in the Women's Land Army and taught at a crowded school in Liverpool. In 1945 she sent the manuscript of The Glen Castle Mystery to her publisher and this first book was published in 1948. Although Allan like many authors of the era often used the school-book genre she was a proponent of A.S. Neill founder of an educational philosophy which promoted freedom and self-discipline in childhood. Her books include adventure stories mysteries stories about families and local communities school stories and ballet stories. She wrote for various ages and her books did not follow a "settled pattern. Wikipedia This scarce title is about a young girl named Marian and her adventures at Arnriggs on a holiday trip. 1994réf. 26411New York: Purgatory Pie Press 1994. Fine. Number 100. Signed by the book artists. An old record that has been re-produced by the Purgatory Pie Press with a new label printed on both sides: "Roberta 'N' Rob Smith - Lame!" and "Roberta 'N' Rob Smith - Worse!" This "random re-issue" pokes fun at bad records with lots of typos slogans and gimmicks. The words 'Lame / Stale' and 'Worse / Fukt-Fi' have been scratched into the record. The record sleeve is printed with information about the fictitious Roberta N Bob fan club and is also signed by them. The plastic bag that covers the sleeve has several stickers which further emphasize the poor record quality "30 years after . New British Infestation" "This record waz wuns mor popular than it is NOW" etc. The label sleeve and stickers are letterpress printed. PRI/010213. Purgatory Pie Press unknown books

One message reads "may your life be as bright as Belmont Ave. on Thursday night;" another reads "I wish you all the luck that God will grant you." The album is completely full with 83 pages of notes from classmates and teachers. One note was written later in 1937 by Esther's daughter Marion and reads "may your life be ---- never be ---- always be ---- never be xxxxx your daughter Marion Blackoff Cooper." 1930réf. 413180Ypsilanti Michigan / Virginia / California 1930. Softcover. Very Good. Oblong octavo measuring 8" x 6". 59pp. String-tied black leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 218 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2.5" x 1.5" and 4.5" x 2.75" with captions with additional ephemera from 1924 to 1930. Tears and chips with some pages detached but present thus very good with near fine photographs with tiny tears and creases. The photo album contains a plethora of photographs featuring Esther Davis and her adventures. Most pictures are of the three Davis daughters; Alice Rachel and Esther either posed or candid shots with their friends taken at Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti Michigan. Esther Davis is seen dancing and smiling with all her glee club members standing outside wearing fancy clothing or costumes and graduating high school and college. Esther Davis lived in the Bessie Leach Priddy House a sorority at Michigan State Normal College. While most of the pictures are from Michigan some are labeled from places in Virginia and California. Two of which feature photos of Mary Pickford on the set of Little Annie Rooney which was being filmed in West Hollywood California. Pickford was 33 at the time of filming but played a spry and determined young Irish girl. The movie became one of the highest grossing films of 1925. Pickford is seen smiling with the cast in one photo and then posing in the other. Both photos are fine with "Mary Pickford in 'Annie Roonie" written on the bottom edge. An interesting collection of photographs from a young woman during 1924 to 1930 documenting her adventures with friends and family completing her education and her encounter with Mary Pickford. unknown books
