ABOUT THIS BOOK: When Javier Marias wrote All Souls his 'Oxford novel' he was unprepared for the way in which reality would begin invade his fiction. Real people mistook themselves for his fictional characters readers confused him with his narrator and a minor English poet whom he mentioned in passing assumed such a large presence in his life that Marias ended up inheriting his Caribbean kingdom Redonda. In Dark Back of Time Marias uses the unsettling effects of All Souls on his life to begin an extraordinary meditation on the transience chance and fragility of life and the way in which reality so easily blurs into fiction. Perhaps the minor poet of the 1930s John Gawsworth or the ill-fated novelist Wilfrid Ewart are not as forgotten as Marias thought they were. After all no one dies without leaving a small trace behind. But how do we know these traces tell us the reality of a person And what of the small child who dies like Marias's brother at the age of three and lives on only in the memory of his parents themselves mortal- This brilliantly digressive constantly surprising funny book moves seamlessly from virtuoso storytelling to intimate autobiography from the grand movements of history - the battlefields of the Somme Spain under Franco - to the strange patterns of small lives. In doing so it shows us how everything is linked or not and how the writer is both a keeper of memories and himself destined to be lost in the dark back of time.Publisher. In a black slipcase with matching goatskin lip. Numerous color photographic plates in the text throughout. Bookplate of Werner L. Gundersheimer on front pastedown see below. A VERY FINE COPY--virtually unworn and internally pristine. This beautifully produced celebration of the Folger Shakespeare Library comes from the personal collection of its Emeritus Director and is offered in a fine binding executed by its former Head Conservator. Our binder J. Franklin Mowery studied bookbinding under Professor Kurt Londenberg at the Staatliche Hochschule für bildende Künste Academy of Art in Hamburg and trained as a paper conservator under Otto Wächter in Vienna before returning to the U.S where he served as the head of conservation at the Folger for 37 years. At the same time he continuing to take private binding commissions for which he was highly acclaimed even having a solo show of his work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1982. Produced on the 70th anniversary of the Folger Shakespeare Library "Infinite Variety" aims as the introduction says to fill the "long-felt need" for a "comprehensive survey of the library's collections and activities for the general public" with contributions from many of the library's staff members including Mowery. The binding demonstrates Mowery's skill the buttery goatskin tooled with precision to a design that is elegantly designed complex and yet slightly whimsical not unlike the works of Shakespeare. According to Mowery's article "A Binder's Training" "Guild of Book Workers' Journal" XX 1981-82 the blind-stamping technique seen here was "particularly favored by Professor Londenberg" and often employed by Mowery for the range of design possibilities it offers. The method uses dies to stamp the patterns: "a photographic process can transfer any black and white image onto zinc plates that are deeply etched and mounted onto type-high metal blocks for heated impressions or onto wood for cold embossing." Former owner Werner L. Gundersheimer b. 1937 served as the director of the Folger from 1984-2002 and has served as Director Emeritus since 2004. His tenure was marked by growth in the library's collections as well as increased academic fellowships and public outreach. University of Washington Press unknown books

DARK BACK OF TIME is Javier Marías' response to the reception of his 1992 novel ALL SOULS. ALL SOULS is arguably semi-autobiographical: it follows a professor of translation working a stint at Oxford who finds himself surrounded by lost souls in academia much like Marías once did in real life. The souls the novel was inspired by--professors bookshop owners and others of that academic ilk--recognized themselves and ardently maintain that Marías' work was roman á clef. DARK BACK OF TIME begins by exploring the bizarre effect of Marías' experience publishing ALL SOULS and thus he's deemed the former a "false novel" intertwining autobiography and fiction to tell a non-linear and mysterious tale evocative of his masterful Argentine forefather Jorge Luis Borges. Javier Marías 1951-2022 remains a star in the canon of contemporary Spanish literature whose complex philosophical narratives continue to influence the fiction and mystery genres while provoking questions about the thin and often blurred line between fiction and reality. 1401892.
