1937ref. 79328Paris: Editions Francis Salabert 1937. Fine. Editions Francis Salabert Paris 1937 26.80 x 34.60 cm une feuille rempliée First edition of this song for voice and piano with a colour-illustrated front cover in a geometric Art Deco style by Roger de Milos. A very fine copy. Cirer m'sieu !. is the French adaptation of Shoe Shine Boy composed by Saul Chaplin with lyrics by Sammy Cahn for the revue Connie's Hot Chocolates of 1936 first performed in Harlem in late October 1935. Almost immediately recorded by Louis Armstrong the song became a swing standard subsequently taken up by Tommy Dorsey and by the small ensemble with which Count Basie recording under the name Jones-Smith Incorporated preserved Lester Young's very first recorded solo. This French edition published by Salabert in 1937 credits the French lyrics to « Jean Cis » the pseudonym under which Francis Salabert the publisher himself was registered as a songwriter with SACEM.Far from being a straightforward translation the French lyrics entirely recast the protagonist: the poor child of Harlem becomes a young shoeshine boy « né là-bas dans la kasbah » dreaming on the pavements of Paris of returning « au soleil africain ». A rare document illustrating through both text and image the manner in which the French sheet-music industry reframed African American repertoire through the prism of its own colonial imagination. 1975ref. #2127-20519Minimal library distinctions Pocket intact else appears as unread unblemished copy in Poly Protected DJ with no significant wear as shown. Synopsis: The author's eighth novel --- One of his very best books and Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1976 and The National Book Foundation Medal for Contributions to American Literature in 1990. A self-described "comic book about death" whose title character is modeled on the self-destructive lyric poet Delmore Schwartz. "For many years Von Humboldt Fleisher and Charles Citrine were best of friends – Humboldt a grand erratic figure a great poet; Charlie a young man of frenzied and noble longings straight out of the Middle West his heart inflamed with literature. But by the 1970's Humboldt has died a failure in New York and Charlie's success-ridden life in Chicago has taken various turns for the worse; when Humboldt acts from the grave to change Charlie's life. He has left Charlie something in his will. Charlie comes into a legacy. Now Charlie is middle-aged and a bit shaky and it is high time his life comes to something. How the gentle but resilient Charlie comes to know what he must do and how he triumphs over his ever more ridiculous tribulations is the great discovery of Humboldt's Gift." .
