Saul Bellow was born June 10 1915 in Lachine Quebec to two Jewish Lithuanian immigrants arriving from the then Russian Empire. They moved to Chicago when he was young. Bellows rebelled against his parent's expectations by pursuing a love of writing born of a love of the Torah Shakespeare and the great Russian authors of the 1800's. Bellows wrote his first novel "Dangling Man" while serving in the merchant marines in World War II seeing it published in 1944. Bellows would write "The Adventures of Augie March" in 1953 while in teaching in Paris under a Guggenheim Fellowship. "The Adventures of Augie March" has been hailed for it's dispelling of the traditional idea of the American hero as the eponymous Augie while having many heroic qualities and every opportunity to succeed fails to do so as he has no clear goal for himself chasing an ever elusive "better fate". The novel has been named as one of the 100 best novels in the English language by "TIME" magazine and Modern Library. 1386456. Shelved Dupont Bookstore. The Viking Press hardcover

1976Best.-Nr. 8957This is a signed copy of "To Jerusalem and Back - A Personal Account" by Saul Bellow with its original dust jacket. 1976 1st edition 1st printing with "First Published in 1976" stated on the copyright page; The Viking Press; New York. This copy is SIGNED by Bellow at the top of the title page in pen. The dust jacket is un-clipped with the original price intact on the front flap. The top edge of the text block is stained blue. From the dust jacket: "This extraordinary book is the result of Saul Bellow's sojourn in Israel during several months in late 1975. It was hardly his first experience of Jerusalem - he had covered the 1967 Six Day War for Newsday - but in many ways it was his most intense. To Jerusalem and Back is his personal record of his stay in Israel and a meditation crackling with wit and controversy on America's relationship with the embattled country. Saul Bellow's journey then is not merely to a very beautiful and very troubled city but into the heart of one of the most tragic and complex issues of this century. His 'personal account' is a major literary work and an urgently important one." Condition: Clean covers; there is a small very light stain at the bottom-right corner of the spine. Sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the text pages are clean and appear unread with no issues found. Some very light foxing on the end papers and pastedowns. A few pages at the front have a small very light smudge at the bottom edge. Bellow's signature in ink at the top of the title page. Light foxing at the long edge of the text block. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.
