Canadian-American author Saul Bellow 1915-2005 first became a voracious reader out of boredom while enduring a period of childhood illness. Language would continue to entertain Bellow throughout his upbringing leading to his participation in the Federal Writers' Project during the Great Depression. Bellow completed DANGLING MAN his debut novel while serving with the merchant marine in World War II. The novel follows a young man in Chicago waiting to get drafted clearly influenced by Bellow's own experiences growing up in the interwar period in Midwestern America. Bellow wrote one other novel THE VICTIM 1947 before applying and being awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship which allowed him to travel to Paris where he started work on THE ADVENTURES OF AUGGIE MARCH 1953 Bellow's most widely acclaimed work that is still considered an American literary classic. He found massive success with the two publications that followed: HERZOG which was quick to chart best-seller lists and HUMBOLDT'S GIFT which won Bellow the 1976 Nobel Prize in Literature. Despite being a frequent albeit Euro-centric traveler Bellow was not a believer in multiculturalism; his rivals included thinkers born of social movements such as feminism and post-modernism. Nonetheless his prose remains amongst the most highly regarded in 20th century literature: an illustrious career which began nearly 80 years ago with the publication of DANGLING MAN. 1401173. Bradley’s most notable contribution to literary scholarship was his book Gold in Your Attic which provided guidance on identifying rare and valuable books popularizing book collecting as a hobby and field of study.
