1853ref. 697031853. Erlangen Verlag von Ferdinand Enke 1853 4° VIII 134 mit 4 Plänen und 7 Tabellen Pappband d.Zt.; St.a.Tit. Erstdruck! Juni 1892 in Prag. unknown

1847ref. 682231847. Boston Med. Surg. J. 36/23. - Boston David Clapp Wednesday July 7 1847 8° pp.449-468 Broschur. First Print! This letter is also reprinted in Edward Warren 1778-1856 'Some Account of the Letheon: or Who is the Discoverer." 3rd. Ed. Boston 1847. "I am much pleased with a communication in a recent No. of your Journal signed "J. B." It seems to be a fair and impartial statement of the matter in controversy. Although gratified with the whole article 1 was particularly pleased with the principles laid down on which the honor of other great discoveries has been awarded and which must govern the public mind in regard to this. And acting on these principles the only ones heretofore recognized by the world in determining the rights of discoverers "J. B."-understood to be Jacob Bigelow M.D has it seems to me conferred all the honor in the case in question upon Dr. Morton. I will let this distinguished writer however speak for himself. He states the case thus:-" Several Portuguese navigators suggested. that there was undoubtedly a western continent and Columbus discovered that there really was one. .Jonathan Hullin 1736 made a theoretical steamboat on paper and seventy years afterwards Robert Fulton made a practical one on the Hudson. The milkers in Gloucestershire discovered that their sore fingers contracted in milking cows prevented them from having the smallpox and suggested this mode of prevention to Dr. Jenner who at that time knew no more about vaccination than Dr. Morton did about ether." These are the principles or rather this is the great principle which has governed and which cannot fail-even to gratify Dr. Morton's enemies-to govern the judgment and opinion of the public in its verdict relative to the question in controversy." Edward Warren: Dr. Jackson's Review of Dr. Gay's Statement Ac. BMSJ 36 1847 p.521 Jacob Bigelow 1787-1879 was an American physician botanist and botanical illustrator. He was architect of Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge Massachusetts in which he is interred husband to Mary Scollay and the father of physician Henry Jacob Bigelow. The standard author abbreviation Bigelow is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name. " An industrious self-made man George Jacob Ziegler 1821-1895 was successively a hairdresser dentist physician author and editor. He is best known as the medical editor of the Periscope section of the Dental Cosmos and as a social activist who championed the welfare of soldiers women and nonsmokers. Ziegler's most unfortunate legacy was his research on dogs which he misinterpreted as demonstrating nitrous oxide's safety in resuscitation. Pointing to Ziegler's work dental anesthetist G.Q. Colton would popularize clinical use of 100% nitrous-oxide anesthetics during his 35-year professional career. Consequently hundreds of thousands of patients worldwide received asphyxial anesthetics." Abstract / George S. Bause: Dentist-physician George J. Paper received May 1 - Read May 23 1867. "Abstracts of a considerable portion of this paper have been already published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society for June 18 1857 and June 20 1861 under the title of "Notes of Researches on the Intimate Structure of the Brain." After adding several new facts and giving further explanations on the subject of the medulla oblongata the author gives a full description of the morphological changes by which the auditory and other centres are developed out of elements of the spinal cord. The auditory centres consist of an outer and an inner nucleus. The outer nucleus is developed from the grey substance of the posterior pyramid and restiform body of the medulla. The inner nucleus arises between the posterior pyramid and the nucleus of the eighth cerebral nerve. From both these nuclei the posterior division of the auditory nerve takes its origin. The anterior division consists of two portions. The principal portion penetrates the medulla beneath the restiform body and running along the outer side of the caput cornu or grey tubercle enters both the outer and inner nucleus. The other portion of the nerve runs backward along the upper border of the restiform body which it accompanies over the superior peduncle of the cerebellum to the inferior vermiform process. The outer auditory nucleus consisting of the grey substance of the posterior pyramid and restiform body is ultimately thrown backward into the cerebellum part of it arching over the fourth ventricle to the opposite side while the rest extends outward to the corpus dentatum of the cerebellum." Abstract - Proc. R. Soc. Lond.15 1867: pp.509-510 Lockhart Clarke 1817-1880 English neurologist carried on detailed investigations on the anatomy and histology of the central nervous system. "Clarke's investigations carried out with great skill and characterized by extreme thoroughness were illustrated with excellent drawings from his own hand. He is best known for his researches on the spinal cord especially those establishing the presence of the nucleus dorsalis . column of Clarke . . . Several of his most important publications on anatomy are to be found in the Philosophical Transactions of the Society of London from 1851 to 1868." Haymaker The Founders of Neurology pp.18-21.
