2018réf. 2347210Dalcassian Publishing Company 2018. Reissue. Hard Cover. Fine/No Jacket. 6x0x9. Reissue. Brand new from publisher. 2018 Hard Cover. 324 pp. Based on the 1928 translation of Rev. Montague Summers edited by D.P. Curtin. Woodcut illustrations reproduced from the 1626 Compendium Maleficarum. A treatise on the prosecution of witches or at least those accused of witchcraft written by a German Catholic clergyman named Heinrich Kramer but rejected by the clergy at the University of Cologne. The common English translation of the title is The Hammer of Witches. A posthumous author credit has been given to Jakob Sprenger though there is cause to believe this is an erroneous attribution. Whatever the case its publication exacerbated the proliferation of witch trials over the next two centuries and its advocacy of torture and deception to obtain convictions in these trials is partly responsible for the frequently brutal nature of inquiries and punishments. 2017réf. 2337200Lincoln Nebraska: University of Nebraska Press 2017. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 6x0x9. First edition. A fine copy in a fine jacket. 2017 Hard Cover. xii 253 pp. Homesteading the Plains offers a bold new look at the history of homesteading overturning what for decades has been the orthodox scholarly view. The authors begin by noting the striking disparity between the public’s perception of homesteading as a cherished part of our national narrative and most scholars’ harshly negative and dismissive treatment. Homesteading the Plains reexamines old data and draws from newly available digitized records to reassess the current interpretation’s four principal tenets: Homesteading was a minor factor in farm formation with most western farmers purchasing their land; most homesteaders failed to prove their claims; the homesteading process was rife with corruption and fraud; and homesteading caused Indian land dispossession. Using data instead of anecdotes and focusing mainly on the nineteenth century Homesteading the Plains demonstrates that the first three tenets are wrong and the fourth only partially true. In short the public’s perception of homesteading is perhaps more accurate than the one scholars have constructed. Homesteading the Plains provides the basis for an understanding of homesteading that is startlingly different from the current scholarly orthodoxy. University of Nebraska Press hardcover books
