FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- Corresponds to ASIN: B001EK4E6Q . 160 pages. -- with a bonus offer--; Anyone who has ever considered media and its relation to humanity has most likely heard the name Marshall McLuhan. Famous for his adages he was a careful student of 20th century media in particular film and television and a prolific lecturer and author. Unquestionably McLuhan’s writings are important but all too often impenetrable. As technology speeds ahead and forces us to reconsider our relationship with it McLuhan’s career merits a freshly creative and accessible examination. W. Terrence Gordon’s Everyman’s McLuhan does just that. As McLuhan’s official biographer Gordon is the perfect man to decipher the more confusing and problematic aspects of the McLuhan legacy. By applying McLuhan’s ideas and theories to the realities of 21st century technology and media like phones that play films and computer chip implants Everyman’s McLuhan fosters a dialogue that was important when McLuhan was alive but is even more relevant today as the line blurs between humans and the technologies we regularly use . 2007. 0977985016 . Picasso’s assessment of James Joyce as a writer that “all the world can understand” speaks to how a perspective that favors the visual can see through dense texts allowing meaning to take shape. W. Terrence Gordon’s examination of the James Joyce canon and its impact on the world both in terms of literature and culture at large provides accessible and singular evaluations of why Joyce no matter how impenetrable his books may seem on the surface continues to attract readers today. In Everyman's Joyce Gordon’s close readings and biographical insight gel with contemporary visual cues that usher Joyce into the 21st century. . 2009. 0979554683 . Mark Batty Publisher paperback

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- Text in English. 80 pp. With 65 ills. 58 col. . 24 x 30 cm. -- with a bonus offer--; One of the most prominent American painters of the twentieth century Jacob Lawrence 1917-2000 worked in a highly personal manner creating Modernist views of everyday life as well as epic narratives of American history and historical figures. His work is direct and forceful in keeping with his lifelong conviction that art could effect social change. At the same time it is essentially humanistic exploring the many challenges of African-American life as a means of addressing the universality of the human experience. Jacob Lawrence: Moving Forward Paintings 1936-1999 celebrates the artist's long and productive career spanning more than 60 years. Beginning with lively street scenes of 1930s Harlem when the young painter was establishing his artistic viewpoint it highlights important examples from every decade of his working life including a tribute to Jackie Robinson--the first African-American to play in the major leagues--and the powerful Hiroshima series done for a reissue of John Hersey's well-known book on the horrific event. This survey concludes with some of Lawrence's final narratives of labor and leisure in his Builders and Games series of the 1990s. In addition to 58 images of the artist's work this volume features an appreciation by David C. Driskell noted artist curator and art historian who was a friend of Lawrence's for many decades and an insightful overview of Lawrence's life and art by Patricia Hills the distinguished scholar of American art. . 2008. 0981525016 . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- Text in English. 192 pp. ; 85 color illustrations. -- with a bonus offer--; In the early 1970s Jacob Holdt left his native Denmark and arrived in the U.S. with 40 dollars in his pocket. He meant to zip through the country on his way to South America but he was so shocked and fascinated by what he saw here that he decided to stay a while. When his family was skeptical about the poverty he described in letters home his father shipped over a cheap amateur camera asking for proof and Holdt began to create this portrait of America and its underclass. In the end he spent five years as a vagabond selling his blood twice a week and hitch-hiking over 100000 miles. He befriended whoever offered him a ride and a ride frequently became an offer to stay a few days. He never said no and in the end visited more than 350 homes where he photographed the people he lived with: poor families millionaires junkies members of the Ku Klux Klan. His images echo the work of the WPA and have inspired Lars Van Trier among others. More recently Holdt who was born 1947 in Copenhagen has been working in third-world countries documenting the lives of those in poverty there. . 2007. 3865213936 . Steidl paperback

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 384 pp. ; 42 illus. -- with a bonus offer--; This autobiography presents the profile of a man who has spent more than half a century living and breathing world cinema - a passion which the press has acknowledged by giving him various nicknames such as 'Monsieur Cinema' 'Mister Cinema' or better still 'Citizen Cannes'. For over thirty years Gilles Jacob has been the soul of the biggest film festival in the world - the Cannes Festival - of which he was elected President in 2000. As witness and champion of the film industry Jacob describes in Citizen Cannes his journey from that of a Jewish boy saved by a catholic seminary during World War II later becoming an entrepreneur and a film critic and finally an accomplished man who in 1978 was appointed general delegate of the biggest vanity fair in the world. Citizen Cannes is a unique and vivid record of Jacob's encounters with the world of cinema. He writes of his passion for filmmakers and the stars who sparkle on the red carpet including insider stories of big names such as Sharon Stone Clint Eastwood Woody Allen Jean-Luc Godard Stanley Kubrick Federico Fellini Gerard Depardieu and the list goes on. Some anecdotes reveal their personalities and eccentricities while others give readers a rare insight about the festival itself the way films are selected judged and rewarded. As a telling behind-the-scenes account of the Cannes Film Festival this is a must-read for film buffs and for anyone fascinated by larger-than-life personalities. . 2011. 0714861901 .
