This copy is SIGNED "with the best wishes of/Theodore Roosevelt/Dec 1906." Jacob Riis a significant contributor to the cause of urban reform in the United States of America at the turn of the twentieth century was among the most dedicated advocates for America's oppressed and downtrodden. He arrived in New York from his native Denmark at the age of 21 in 1870. A pioneer in photojournalism Riis photographed and wrote about the slums and tenements of a New York in the dawn of a new century. Riis came to Roosevelt's attention through his 1890 book HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES. As Commissioner of the New York City Police Department Roosevelt accompanied Riis on his evening travels through the slums and witnessed firsthand the inhumane conditions endured by many of New York's inhabitants. In his 1901 book MAKING OF AN AMERICAN Riis wrote of Roosevelt: "It could not have been long after I wrote HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES that he came to the Evening Sun office one day looking for me. I was out and he left his card merely writing on the back of it that he had read my book and had 'come to help.' That was all and it tells the whole story of the man. I loved him from the day I first saw him; nor ever in all the years that have passed has he failed of the promise made then. No one ever helped as he did. For two years we were brothers on Mulberry Street." Roosevelt in turn wrote of Riis after his death: "It is difficult for me to write of Jacob Riis only from the public standpoint. He was one of my truest and closest friends. I have ever prized the fact that once in speaking of me he said 'since I met him he has been my brother.' I have not only admired and respected him beyond measure but I have loved him dearly . and I mourn him as if he were one of my own family." The Macmillan Company hardcover books
1854Best.-Nr. 194411854. Dewees Jacob. The Great Future of America and Africa is an 1854 colonizationist treatise documenting the racial and political logic through which some white reformers advocated gradual emancipation while rejecting Black citizenship in the United States. Addressed to "the white race and the free Negro of the United States" the work identifies colonization as a proposed system for managing emancipation revealing how racial separation economic argument and claims of political practicality shaped anti-slavery thought outside immediatist abolitionism. Dewees's assertion that abolition required "of the master sacrifices that never will be-never can be made" places the book within antebellum debates over slavery free Black migration and the limits of white antislavery reform. Dewees Jacob. The Great Future of America and Africa: An Essay Showing Our Whole Duty to the Black Man Consistent with Our Own Safety and Glory. Philadelphia: Printed for the Author by H. Orr 1854. First edition. 8vo. Original brown publisher's cloth gilt-titled spine blindstamped boards pale yellow endpapers; 236 pages. Contemporary ownership inscriptions of Isaac Eastburn appear on the front free endpaper and front flyleaf. The text develops an extended argument for eventual emancipation paired with organized removal to Africa or other western colonial destinations offering primary-source evidence for the study of colonization white racial ideology African American emigration debates and the political vocabulary of slavery reform in the decade before the Civil War. The book belongs to the broader colonization movement associated with efforts to relocate free and formerly enslaved African Americans outside the United States a movement that treated Black freedom as separable from equal civic belonging. Its 1854 publication is significant because it appeared during escalating national conflict over slavery and the same year as the Kansas-Nebraska Act when arguments over slavery's expansion sharpened the divide between gradualist abolitionist pro-slavery and emigrationist positions. Front joint splitting with board wear; cloth worn; front free endpaper repaired with cellotape; crayon markings to approximately six early leaves; text complete. Overall good only. A substantial antebellum statement of colonizationist thought useful for documenting the contested relationship between emancipation race and citizenship before the Civil War. unknown books

1859Best.-Nr. 176601859. Shipherd Jacob R. History of the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue 1859 documenting one of the most consequential acts of organized resistance to the Fugitive Slave Act in the years immediately preceding the American Civil War. The work records the seizure of John Price an escaped enslaved man captured by federal authorities in Oberlin Ohio on September 13 1858 and his subsequent transfer to Wellington in an effort to avoid local abolitionist intervention. Residents from Oberlin and surrounding communities assembled in Wellington confronted federal deputies and forcibly freed Price from custody enabling his escape to Canada through established antislavery networks. The episode prompted federal indictments against thirty-seven participants with only two convictions and became a focal point of national debate over federal enforcement power local resistance and the legal obligations imposed by the Fugitive Slave Act. Shipherd's narrative supported by contemporary participants and advocates provides detailed chronology identification of individuals involved and interpretive framing that aligns the Rescue with broader antislavery mobilization and constitutional conflict. Shipherd Jacob R. History of the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue. Boston: John P. Jewett and Company 1859. First edition. Issued in original paper wrappers with an introduction by Prof. Henry E. Peck and Hon. Ralph Plumb the volume presents a sustained account of the arrest rescue and subsequent trials accompanied by arguments challenging the legitimacy of the Fugitive Slave Act. The introduction urges readers to consider "whether the Fugitive Slave Act can exist" warning that its enforcement threatens to extend "a gigantic tyranny which shall know no law but its own despotic will" reflecting the immediacy of constitutional and moral opposition in abolitionist print culture. Single volume; pagination incomplete with final leaf lacking. Original paper wrappers browned with minor chipping at the edges; modern paper ex libris affixed to interior wrapper. Overall good condition. A contemporary abolitionist account of a defining legal and political confrontation that intensified sectional divisions on the eve of the Civil War. unknown books
