2018Best.-Nr. 2347210Dalcassian Publishing Company 2018. Reissue. Hard Cover. Fine/No Jacket. 6x0x9. Reissue. Brand new from publisher. 2018 Hard Cover. 324 pp. Based on the 1928 translation of Rev. Montague Summers edited by D.P. Curtin. Woodcut illustrations reproduced from the 1626 Compendium Maleficarum. A treatise on the prosecution of witches or at least those accused of witchcraft written by a German Catholic clergyman named Heinrich Kramer but rejected by the clergy at the University of Cologne. The common English translation of the title is The Hammer of Witches. A posthumous author credit has been given to Jakob Sprenger though there is cause to believe this is an erroneous attribution. Whatever the case its publication exacerbated the proliferation of witch trials over the next two centuries and its advocacy of torture and deception to obtain convictions in these trials is partly responsible for the frequently brutal nature of inquiries and punishments. Original gilt-stamped calf modern red leather gilt-stamped spine label raised bands; spine mended rubbed. Ownership stamp of “P.G.” Very good. RARE. First edition in English; first printed in Leiden in 1727 as Matheseos universalis elementa. The text seeks to systematically clarify Newton. / “This work translated into Dutch 1728 and English 1752 sic is of didactic rather than original merit but it was significant for its invitation to mathematicians to elucidate systematically Newton’s Universal Arithmetick which ‘s Gravesande exemplified by his own explanation of two passages from Newton’s book. ‘s Gravesande found the lighthearted treatment of infinitesimals and the infinite in Bernard de Fontenelle’s Elemens de la geometrie de l’infini Paris 1727 unacceptable and he maintained his objections in the Journal litteraire against Fontenelle’s rejoinder 1730.” – DSB V p. 510. / Jip van Besouw has argued that it is widely believed that ‘s Gravesande had met Newton resulting in an appointment for the same at Leiden University. Rather says van Besouw “. . . ‘s Gravesande’s appointment resulted from a very carefully built up reputation in scholarly circles rather than from accidental meetings and patronage. ‘s Gravesande had written several innovative papers and was in contact with both leading mathematicians and local political and patrician figures already before 1715.” – The impeccable credentials of an untrained philosopher: Willem Jacob ‘s Gravesande’s career before his Leiden professorship 1688–1717. Bound in three quarter cloth over marbled paper boards with gilt lettering and ruling on spine. Fascinating work on Don Joseph Nasi 1524-1579 Jewish diplomat and administrator member of the House of Mendes and influential figure in the Ottoman Empire during the rules of both Sultan Suleiman I and his son Selim II. He was a great benefactor of the Jewish people. A Court Jew he was appointed the Lord of Tiberias with the expressed aim of resettling Jews in Palestine and encouraging industry there; the attempt failed and later he was appointed the Duke of Naxos and the Seven Islands. Nasi also brought about war with the Republic of Venice at the end of which Venice lost the island of Cyprus to the Ottomans. After the death of Selim he lost influence in the Ottoman Court but was allowed to keep his titles and pension for the remainder of his life. Four pages of publisher's titles advertised at rear. Some wear of binding along edges and boards rubbed. Small paper sticker on front cover cloth near lower spine. Reinforced at front free endpaper and here starting lightly. Name lightly inked to front free endpaper. Number penciled to half title. Block age-toned. Back inside cover with flaws as at front. Librairie Lipschutz hardcover books
