In 8, pp. 27.
A beautiful edition of Dante's Inferno (Italian text). Illustrated with 55 extremely disturbing original etchings, almost all full-page and hors-texte, by Hungarian-Jewish artist Laszlo Barta. Edition limited to 275 numbered copies of which this is one of 200 printed on fine Rives wove paper. Folio. Loose as issued in original wraps, with board chemise and slipcase. A tiny bit of faint foxing, else FINE AND BRIGHT. A rare and fascinating illustrated edition of the Inferno, likely made even rarer by the fact that both the illustrator and the publisher were Jewish, and it was issued in France on the eve of the Second World War.
Two volumes, complete. An exhaustive history of the Gherardesca family, written in order to establish that family's nobility and rights. With the rare second volume, an extensive compendium of documentation with four engraved plates. The most famous member of the family in question, of course, was Ugolino della Gherardesca, a traitor immortalized by Dante in Inferno XXXII-III, where he eternally chews on the head of Archbishop Ruggieri, who had imprisoned him in a tower without food until he ate the bodies of his children. xv, 615; 1, 317, 18 + four engraved plates (one folding). Printed on fine laid paper. Elaborate engraved title-page in first volume. Large 4to. Attractively bound in vellum-backed decorated boards. Light wear to bindings and a little soiling to spines, but structurally perfect. Internally FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. RARE.
A portfolio of 51 haunting original etchings by Hanif Lehmann printed on extremely fine, thick wove paper, with 12 pages of relevant text excerpts from Dante's Inferno in German, as translated by Stefan George. ONE OF ONLY FIVE COPIES OF THE LARGE FOLIO EDITION WITH ALL OF THE ETCHINGS SIGNED, JUSTIFIED, AND TITLED BY THE ARTIST (in the regular edition, limited to 25 copies, there are only 48 etchings, and they are not signed). Each of these five copies was printed for a specific collector, named in the printed justification: this copy was printed for a well-known Italian opera singer. The justification is also signed by the artist. The brooding portrait of Dante (the frontispiece) in this copy is the very first impression taken from the plate, and is justified as such ("Erstabzug"). Large folio (47.2 cm). Loose as issued in the original, gorgeously-produced cloth and board folding case. FINE AND BRIGHT, WITH NO DEFECTS. Hanif Lehmann
In-12°; pp. (24), 342, 82), la prima e l’ultima carta sono bianche. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena con titolo manoscritto al dorso. Edizione originale. Dedica a Francesco Barberini.

pp. 140, (4)[Publisher's advertisements]. 24 mo. 170 mm. 20th century full dark tan buckram binding. Manuscript ownership of: E. Jackson, 1776. Decorative mid-19th century stamped ownership of Peter F. Hunn. Peter F. Hunn (1794-1847) was an eminent attorney in New Jersey and New York. Hardbound. Very good. Francisco Gomez de Quevedo y Santibanez Villegas (1580-1645) was a Spanish nobleman, politician, satirist, poet, and writer of the Baroque era. Residing almost constantly at court (Philip III), he exercised a kind of political and literary jurisdiction which had no end of biting and potent wit. General politics, social economy, war, finance, literary and religious questions, all come under his disecting knife. He had a disertation, a pamphlet, or a song for everything. He was at his most brilliant and bitterly satiric in his "Visions of Hell". Loosely based on Dante and Lucan. Describing the inhabitants of hell Quevedo attacks all of his favorite targets, without regard to type or class. 'As a sartirist and humorist Quevedo stands in the first rank of Spanish writers. after Cervantes he is the greatest Spanish prose writer of the 17th century.' - James Fitzmaurice-Kelly. This translation of into English by Sir Roger L'Estrange (1616-1704) is considered a remarkable work in it's own right. W151
