1535Best.-Nr. ST19567-017Paris: Jean Bignan apud Ambroise Girault 1535. 163 x 108 mm. 6 1/2 x 4 1/4". 68 pp. 5 leaves.Edited by Charles Estienne. Old 17th century stiff vellum flat spine title in ink. Front pastedown with book plate of the Macclesfield South Library first two leaves with very small Macclesfield embossed stamp. Colas USTC 204573. See Renouard "Estienne" p. 42 #16. Vellum on rear cover roughened small water spot to front cover but the binding entirely sound and quite fresh and clean internally. Abridged and edited for schoolchildren by the scholar physician and printer Charles Estienne this is a treatise on the customary dress and fashions in ancient Rome. It is among the best-known works of the distinguished humanist and diplomat Lazare de Baïf 1485-1547 who also produced respected translations of the Greek dramatists and published treatises on other aspects of ancient life including vases and ships. Charles Estienne 1504 or 1505-64 for a time served as tutor to Baïf's son Jean Antoine who became a famous poet. Charles' brother Robert also published this title in 1535 but Renouard believes Girault's printing might have come first. Colas gives priority to the Estienne press. Because Girault's printing contains additions and corrections that don't appear in Robert's edition it seems more likely that this was the later printing if only by a matter of weeks. The Girault edition is uncommon in the marketplace. The provenance is significant here as our volume was part of the great library of the earls of Macclesfield which was sold in 12 sales at Sotheby's from 16 March 2004 to 2 October 2008 for some £22 million approximately $40 million at the time. The library was dispersed when the 9th Earl Macclesfield Richard Timothy George Mansfield Parker b. 1943 who was described by the "Independent" as leading an "unconventional lifestyle" was forced to leave his 14th century Shirburn Castle after a protracted family dispute. Called by the paper "a sleeping beauty" his crenellated home had a moat a drawbridge and at the time of the Earl's departure a repair bill of approximately £2.6 million. Despite the building's dilapidation the books in the very large library were distinguished for being uniformly well preserved were almost always in their original bindings and were a sensation at auction for more than four years. It captures a city that was undergoing rapid transformation: streets public buildings hotels gardens shops the harbour the beach markets and various aspects of the population such as photographs of the Hotel Club the Post Office Praça 7 de Março now Praça 25 de Junho Ponta Vermelha Polana beach and other locations allowing a comparison between the city of 1901 and present-day Maputo. Joseph Lazarus 18761940 and his elder brother Maurice Lazarus 18661949 were of British Jewish origin hailing from the Sunderland area in north-east England. The family emigrated to South Africa and towards the end of the 19th century the two brothers took up photography passing through Barberton before settling in Lourenço Marques now Maputo Mozambique around 1899. They were pioneering photographers in Mozambique where they founded the J. & M. Lazarus studio. Through their photography they documented urban growth official events local communities and everyday life in the city whilst also producing picture postcards and photographic albums of great historical value. Their work became an important source for the study of Mozambiques colonial history; among other things they documented with photographs the visit to Mozambique by Prince D. Luiz Filipe heir to the Portuguese throne in JulySeptember 1907. They subsequently moved their business to Lisbon where they opened Photographia Ingleza a studio renowned for producing portraits of the Portuguese elite. A receipt dated 1929 attests to the continuity of their work and the prestige they had achieved in Portugal. Today the legacy of the Lazarus brothers is widely recognised by the Portuguese Centre of Photography and by researchers and is considered an important documentary heritage for the study of photography history and the collective memory of Mozambique and Portugal. With a woodcut printer's device on the title-page. 52 3 1 blank pp. Second instalment of the first children's books series ever printed. The work contains a description of ancient Roman vessels and was specifically printed for the entertainment and edification of children. This second edition by Estienne is very rare. It was not known to some of the early bibliographers and has not been on the market since 1947.The work is part of a series on Roman antiquities written by Lazare de Baïf 1496-1547 around 1530. The present work is the second title in the three-part series. It discusses ancient Roman vessels containers dishes vases and receptacles complete with an index in alphabetical order at the end. De Baïf's work was edited and abridged by Charles Estienne 1505-1564 scholar physician and younger brother of printer Robert Estienne 1503-1559. His work met great success and many editions of the different parts of the series were printed in the 1530s and 40s.De Baïf was a humanist poet and wealthy diplomat. He was the French ambassador in Venice and Germany. He hired Charles Estienne as a Latin tutor for his son Jean-Antoine de Baïf 1532-1589 who later became a poet. Estienne initially abridged De Baïf's works to provide simplified Latin readings for his student but soon published it for the enjoyment of other children as well. He was an elegant writer of Latin verse and is commended by poet Joachim du Bellay as having introduced a few valuable words into the French language. With a small water-stain in the outer corner of the leaves throughout not affecting the text. Sir John Pettus of Suffolk Kt. of the Society for the Mines Royal 1613-1690 was deputy Governor of the royal mines for over 35 years.
