Lazare Nicolas Marguerite Carnot 1753-1823 military engineer mathematician and one of the principal organizational figures of the French Revolution is remembered above all as the "Organizer of Victory" architect of the levée en masse and the reorganization of the revolutionary armies that repelled the invading coalition forces of 1793-94. Alongside this political and military career Carnot pursued an independent line of inquiry into the foundations of the infinitesimal calculus publishing his "Réflexions sur la métaphysique du calcul infinitésimal" in 1797 a work seeking to place Newton's and Leibniz's calculus on secure logical footing without recourse to actual infinitesimals later engaged with by Bolzano Cauchy and subsequent historians of mathematical rigor. This 1933 edition issued in the prestigious series "Classics of Natural Science" from the State Technical-Theoretical Publishing House presents the first Russian translation of Carnot's treatise rendered by N. M. Solovyov with an extensive introductory study by the historian of mathematics A. P. Yushkevich together with a substantial biographical essay by M. E. Podgorny on Carnot's role as organizer of the Revolution's military victories. A second slightly abridged edition followed only in 1936 from ONTI in a larger run of 5000 making the present first edition at 3000 copies the scarcer and bibliographically primary printing. The volume was prepared under the general editorship of a distinguished board including the physicist S. I. Vavilov later president of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the probabilist A. Ya. Khinchin; several contributors to the series including B. M. Hessen and A. A. Agol would fall victim to the Stalinist purges within a few years of publication lending the volume additional interest as an artifact of Soviet scientific publishing in the early 1930s.
