2012réf. B50-H15NEW in shrink wrap. 6" x 1" x 9.25" Moshe ben Maimon better known as Moses Maimonides is among the most celebrated rabbis in the history of Judaism and the author of works in Arabic on many subjects including influential philosophical and medical treatises. On Hemorrhoids is one of these texts written for a young man of a noble family who was seeking a regimen to help him treat his hemorrhoids. While not the first to write on this subject Maimonides's work bears his personal stamp with his emphasis on dietetics which plays a primary role in so many of his other medical writings. He warns against hastily treating the painful condition with drastic measures such as bleeding and surgery instead encouraging more cautious treatments like a change in diet. He also advises his patient that if more extreme actions need to be taken then Maimonides himself must be present. Unlike other modern editions of this important work this edition of On Hemorrhoids takes into account all the extant Arabic and Judeo-Arabic manuscripts. The book includes critical editions of medieval Hebrew and Latin translations and a glossary of medical terms. Brigham Young University hardcover

Synopsis: The "Letter of Aristeas" also known as the "Aristeas Letter" is a notable ancient document that narrates the origins of the Hebrew translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek known as the Septuagint. Traditionally attributed to Aristeas a HellenisticJewish official the letter aims to explain how and why the translation was undertaken under the patronage of the Ptolemaic king Ptolemy II Philadelphus. The letter begins with Aristeas addressing his friend Philocrates describing his journey from Egypt to Jerusalem where he seeks the favor of the Jewish high priest Eleazar. He recounts the relaxed attitude of the Jewish community their dedication to their religious customs and their desire to have their Scriptures translated for Greek-speaking Jews Abroad. Aristeas details the king's admiration for Jewish Law and his decree to have the Scriptures translated into Greek involving a large scholarly committee of Jewish elders and Greek translators. The process emphasizes the reverence and carefulness involved in the translation portraying it as a divine and meticulous effort. The letter also highlights the mutual respect between Greeks and Jews as well as the importance of the Septuagint in facilitating understanding between different cultures. The narrative concludes with Aristeas expressing hope for the success of the translation and the benefits it will bring while emphasizing the divine blessing upon the project. The Greek text is that of H. St. J. Thackeray and the brief critical notes that accompany it are by Professor Hadas. Insurance & handling is included free.
